Dear Ladislav;

I saw your note on Deja.com, regarding testing compounds on Drosophilia for anti-aging effects. Our chemist has developed several new ways of protecting Glutathione and Carnosine (the body's two most powerful antioxidants), in such a way that it is not destroyed by the stomach acids or the enzymes in the bloodstream. Our in-vitro tests indicate that it will slow telomeric erosion through antioxidant mechanisms and likely preserving telomerase degradation by superoxide radical thereby regrowing and making up for some fo the base pair shortening that occurs during each cell division. We see cell population doublings beyond the normal Hayflick limit.

We are interested in having these compounds tested for their effect on lifespan.

If you can still provide Drosophilia tests, let us know and we'll send you a NDA.

Thanks,

A new book on evolution theory has been released:
The Evolution of Aging, ISBN:0978870905, Goldsmith, 200pp

Here is a mystery that has puzzled scientists for nearly 150 years: If
evolution is driven by survival of the fittest, then how did aging and
other traits that reduce survival and fitness ever evolve?

Some theorists contended that aging is not a design feature of organisms
but rather a defect, fundamental limitation, or unavoidable adverse
side-effect of some beneficial function. These theories ignored the
other fitness-adverse traits, had many logical flaws, and were unable to
obtain experimental confirmation. Recent experimental results provide
additional support for aging as an evolved mechanism.

This book reviews the traditional theories of aging and the underlying
evolution theory issues as well as the observational evidence regarding
the nature of aging. The author shows how analysis of the information
transfer aspects of the inheritance process ("digital genetics") reveals
additional evolved traits that are incompatible with Darwinian evolution
theory as well as additional complexity in the evolution process.

Author's web site ( http://www.azinet.com/aging/ ) provides book
excerpts, additional articles, and links to cited sources.

Treon Verdery,

I have scanned a few of your postings from '93:

http://www.bio.net/bionet/mm/ageing/1993-October/000464.html

on and wonder if you know of any progress that's been made in
implementing gene therapies for either mitochondrial disease, and/or
aging.

I have read and corresponded with a few people and so far,
the difficulty still seems to be in figuring out a robust process for
introducing changes into the mitochondria - some are chemical
and direct, some try to mimic normal processes and one tries to
send tailored mtDNA to the nucleus with some kind of tag that
causes it to migrate to the mitochondria within the cell mechanism.

I don't understand these things, but my sense is that any real hope
my nephew, and others with MELAS and other such diseases really only
have a chance with gene therapy, as opposed to the current medicinal
assistance (This motivates my intrusions on folks like you who have
posted on the matter).

I appreciate any guidance you may provide.

Thanks,

I am a student who is doing some research on biocompatible protein polymers
and baldness in men and women. So far no one has been able to answer my
research question. As you know, biocompatible polymer protein synthesis is an
expanding field, and I was now wondering if it could possibly help baldness
in men and women. If a poly-hair, made of these polymers, could be
implanted under the scalps skin, where tissue would grow to it, anchoring it like
real hair, would there be a rejection factor to contend with? Biocompatible
polymers are used in operations and for years women have received breast
implants, now the bio-chip uses polymers to anchor it under the skin, so it doesn't
move about! Once anchored the hair would remain for life. The problem with
present day hair transplantation is usually the donor area is not sufficient
to cover the top of the head to a desired thickness. This could possible
solve that problem! I have asked some poly tech firms on line, some nurses and
doctors on line, with no luck, or they admitted they didn't know the answer!

thanks for your time

Dear Ageing researchers,

Addgene is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the
sharing of plasmid constructs described in published literature.
Scientists deposit plasmids at Addgene, and Addgene takes care of
archiving data and samples and answering requests for plasmids from
scientists world-wide. Addgene provides request summaries to the
depositing scientists. Addgene will also work with the depositing
institution's technology transfer office.

Addgene invites the ageing research community to use Addgene to share
the plasmids they need for their experiments. We have several
deposits of Sir2 plasmids and would like to expand our collection of
ageing research related plasmids. Please visit www.addgene.org for
more detail.

54 Scientists' Open Letter on Aging Research

FYI:

------------------------

Scientists' Open Letter on Aging Research

To whom it may concern,

Aging has been slowed and healthy lifespan prolonged in many disparate
animal models (C. elegans, Drosophila, Ames dwarf mice, etc.). Thus,
assuming there are common fundamental mechanisms, it should also be
possible to slow aging in humans.

Greater knowledge about aging should bring better management of the
debilitating pathologies associated with aging, such as cancer,
cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, and Alzheimer's. Therapies
targeted at the fundamental mechanisms of aging will be instrumental in
counteracting these age-related pathologies.

Therefore, this letter is a call to action for greater funding and
research into both the underlying mechanisms of aging and methods for
its postponement. Such research may yield dividends far greater than
equal efforts to combat the age-related diseases themselves. As the
mechanisms of aging are increasingly understood, increasingly effective
interventions can be developed that will help prolong the healthy and
productive lifespans of a great many people.

Young Mother and Longevity?

Greetings,

Recently we have come across a puzzling observation that being
conceived to particularly young mother (age below 25 years) increases
the chances to survive to 100 (odds ratio is close to 2.0).

Any ideas why is that?

Surprisingly there is no much difference between the 25-year and
45-year mothers in this respect. So this is not a deterioration in
later life, but rather a kind of the early-life "credit", which is
rapidly exhausting and then the age effects become negligible.

Is it possible that the best most vigorous eggs are used first, very
early in life?

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Leonid
