Hi Christy
Fascinating yes, and a little bit terrifying (I love the title of one of
you recommended papers “national pest”!).
We started in 2007 the study of the populational dynamics of "Boccardia
polybranchia" that were associated to mytilids beds near the outfall
before reef formation. This species form also patches among the little
mussels (Brachidontes) and were successfully used as indicator of
moderated organic contamination (Elias et al., 2003 and 2006).
However this "new" species is different (invader...?). We have written a
manuscript to Marine Pollution Bulletin, but the Editor considers
(November) the phenomenon is only of local relevance... (It is my fault to
born in Latin America). We observed the exclusion of the mussels,
suffocated by Boccardia reef. The stony-rocks (dominant hard substrate)
were covered totally by a thick layer (more than 30 cm height) of tube
worms. People can walk over and over… including tourists (a poster
recommended not to swing because you are at 1,200 m from sewage effluent).
Like other spionids brood into the tube several capsules with nursery eggs
and one or two larvae.
Experimentally (last week) we proved a total recovery to small disturbance
in 3-4 days. The reef also support the storm season (April to September
2009).
Well Christy thank you for your interest. Good trek to Caifornia… and if
you can send me the articles!
Cheers wormly
Rodolfo

>> Hi Rodolfo,
>>
>> Fascinating! Can you tell us a bit more about these reefs? When did they
>> form and how long have they persisted? I've been studying beds formed by
>> Boccardia proboscidea and Dipolydora sp. in Bodega Harbor (Central
>> California). Densities are in the tens of thousands per m2, which is
>> much
>> less dense than you find. They form patches of dense tubes and mucky
>> sediment rather than reefs. The patches are adjacent to areas with
>> almost no
>> spionids and high densities of phoronids. I've been studying the ecology
>> of
>> these patches, including why the patches persist over multiple
>> generations
>> adjacent to a very different community type. There are similar patches
>> of
>> Boccardia proboscidea in other NE Pacific locations and SE Australia
>> near a
>> sewage outfall as well as records of other bed-forming spionids.
>>
>> Here are the references I have for Boccardia proboscidea in Australia
>> (where it is invasive):

Dear Wagner,

I have Raphidrilus nemasoma (or at least something that I called
Raphidrilus nemasoma :-)) from the Northern Adriatic Sea. I collected it
in November 2008. in Vrsar harbour (Northern Adriatic sea), in the talus
of the invasive algae Caulerpa racemosa. I found all 23 specimens in
only one sub-sample. They are fixed in formalin and then conserved in
70% alcohol.
Let me know how can I help.

Many greetings,

Hello:

I was hoping some on this list may be able to direct me to literature or someone with expertise on Spionid polychaetes, particularly in the genus Polydora.

I seem to occasionally find specimens that do not appear in Blake's Revision of Polydora from the East Coast of North America (1971). Most recently, one has caught my eye:

Very dark, distinctive pigmentation at the anterior end.

Distinctively swollen-looking dorsum around setiger 2 that folds over itself and overlaps setiger 1.

Other features: hooded hooks begin around setiger 7, appearing to have slightly constricted shaft; the modified spines of setiger 5 are in a tight semi-circle, with very long pennoned companion setae reaching far into the center of semi-cirlce created by modified spines; prostomium notched, nuchal tentacle present.

Thanks very much in advance for having a look at this.

Scott Jones

Benthic Ecology

Smithsonian Marine Station, Fort Pierce

with this message we would like to remind to all of you that the
deadline for abstract submission for communication and/or poster
presentations for the 10th Polychaete Conference (20-26 June 2010,
preparation and the annex form are both available at the Conference site
at www.polychaeta.it;
you can print or download them, but first you have shortly to register
For any query, please do not exitate to contact one of us.
We also wish to inform you that up to date more than 150 colleagues
their contributions. So we expect to receive shortly most of the others
abstract's contributions.
We also would like to inform that at the beginning of January we will

Dear Annelidians,

please read the following announcement if you work on material from the
Southern Ocean!

SOAP (Southern Ocean Annelid Project)

Workshop on circum-Antarctic Polychaetes

A one-week workshop dealing with circum-Antarctic polychaetes will be
held from 8 to 12 March 2010 at the Swope Center, Marine Biological
Laboratory, Woods Hole, MA, USA. The goal is to compare material from
selected families from the Weddell Sea and Ross Sea to determine whether
polychaetes have circumpolar distributions or are endemic to one of the
two areas. Additionally, younger scientists are invited to expand their
knowledge and to seek help from experienced taxonomists. There will be
four or five invited speakers and a maximum of ten other participants.
The speakers that agreed to participate so far are: Adrian Glover
(spionids), Stacy Doner (cirratulids), Jim Blake (several smaller
families), Ruth Barnich (scale worms) and, hopefully, Maria Cristina
Gambi (sabellids).

The workshop will be rather structured to ensure tangible outcomes as
requested by the funding projects. Any data from the workshop will be
submitted to SCAR/MarBIN. Photos, sketches and preliminary descriptions
of new species will be submitted to polychaetes.info which is a
repository for working species among other things.

Paticipants will be selected by the organising committee, consisting of
me, Maria Cristina Gambi, Myriam Schüller, and Kerstin Kroeger. Please
submit a short message to the email address below, stating your
affiliation, area of taxonomic interest/expertise and any material that
you might be able to bring along. Your message should reach me no later
than 31 December.

Funding of this workshop is by the Census of Marine Life projects CAML
and CeDAMar and by ENSR in Woods Hole. I will also try to raise some
additional funds from the German Science Foundation so everybody can
participate with all expenses paid. I am looking forward to your
applications!
        223 pages. CORRIGENDA.

pp. 2 and 31. Subsequent to the publication of this edition, Dr. Mary E.
Petersen, Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen, went through the
collections there and found three of the original six specimens listed in
an unpublished catalogue by Kroeyer of worms transferred to the
Zoological Museum from the Royal Museum (ZMUC Archives A92, p. 38). The
specimens are labelled "R.[ Roerglas, vial] Serpula caudata Kr., meget
smukt, Vestindien [very beautiful, West Indies], 14/1-56 [14 January
1856, journal date]." The catalogue entry gives the date of collection
as 18/9-45 [18 September, 1845]. The name of the collector is not given.
Dr. Petersen writes that: "Dr. Torben Wolf, ZMUC, pointed out that
Kroeyer was first in the West Indies in 1853 and thus could not have
collected the material in 1845, but that Oersted may have collected it."

The name "Serpula caudata Kr." exists only in the hand-written Kroeyer's
catalog and on the specimen labels. There is no record that Kroeyer ever
formally published this name; therefore, it has no nomenclatural status
  (ICZN, 1985:13-17, Articles 8 & 9). Moerch, 1863:96, indicated that
Kroeyer was the original author of the species by including his name
after the binomen _Phragmatopoma caudata_. Dr. Petersen suggests, and I
concur, that the appropriate name for this species should be written as:
_Phragmatopoma caudata_ Kroeyer in Moerch, 1863.

  p. 74. The name _Sabellaria spinulosa_ Leuckart, 1849, has been used by
numerous authors for what are now considered to be a number of apparently
unrelated forms. Along with a list of "varieties," the species has been
considered as an example of the "cosmopolitan" distribution of
sabellariid species. Johansson (1927:93), included Iceland (Island) in
the list of localities in the distribution of this species. Hartman
(1959:476), lists the type locality as Iceland and that error is repeated
under Remarks: p. 76. Dr. Petersen also called my attention to the fact
that Leuckart (1849), in a paper entitled "Zur Kenntnis der Fauna von
Island" included a discussion, unrelated to any sabellariid material
collected from Iceland, of a sabellariid species collected from the North
Sea near Helgoland which Frey and Leuckart previously (1847:15) had
thought might be _Amphitrite ostrearia_ Cuvier and they transferred this
species to _Hermella ostrearia_ (Cuvier). Grube (1848: 38) proposed the
name _Sabellaria longispina_ for a species collected from the
Mediterranean (Mittelmeer, perhaps Trieste) by Otto which Grube
considered identical with Frey and Leuckart's _H. ostrearia_ (Cuvier).
Leuckhart (1849:178-179, footnote 3) proposed a new name, _Hermella
spinulosa_, for the species from Helgoland. This species name is listed
in the Material examined on p. 75, (ZMB Q-2253); Nordsee and Trieste); as
is _Sabellaria ostrearia_ (Cuv.) (ZMB Q-4866); Helgoland). The
Mediterranean and North Sea forms should be re-examined and compared to
determine whether or not they belong in the same, or a different group.

  p. 185. In the original description of the genus _Bathysabellaria_
Lechapt and Gruet, 1993:243, the presence of an unpaired median organ at
the anterior end of the ventral midline of the prostomium was not noted.
Subsequent studies of an additional new species in this genus (Lechapt
and Kirtley, in preparation) reveal the presence of this feature and a
re-examination of examples of _B. neocaledoniensis_ Lechapt and Gruet,
1993, confirm the presence of this organ. In all other known genera of
Sabellariidae the median organ, if present, is located at, or near, the
anterior dorsal midline; between the opercular peduncles (lobes, stalks).
  [-- CORRIGENDA ends]

Dr Kirtley comments: Since I had been assured that the type material of
_Phragmatopoma caudata_ Kroeyer, a major reef-building species on the
western Atlantic coast in the W. hemisphere - had been lost, and since I
believe the name should be conserved - I am pleased that the types are
found and future workers could refer to something better than the
  illustrations published by Moerch.

The name "S. spinulosa" has been spread around the globe by polychaete
taxonomists like jelly on bread, as solid proof of the existence of
"cosmopolitan" species. I am also pleased to find out why no one in
Iceland ever answered my inquiries about local sabellariid specimens.

The presence of a ventral median organ may only be of interest to those
who may wonder what the animals use them for anyway, but I think the
structure and position of this organ might be found to be useful
information in analysis of the phylogenetic relationships among various
  taxa in Sabellariidae.

Greetings!

In addition to David Kirtley's book on Sabellariidae, and the corrigenda mentioned by Joao, he also edited and translated to English the 156-page paper by:

Bruno Caline, Yves Gruet, Claudine Legendre, Jeannine Le Phun, Alain L'Homer, Robert Mathieu & Regina Zbinden. 1992. "The Sabellariid Reefs in the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel, France. After the list of lliterature cited, there are two pages with a list of all the figures in the text, grouped by chapter and with the page number for each.
Almost 7 years ago I was able to buy a brand new copy of Kirtley (1994), after finding a comment at the IAMSLIC mailing list using Google, stating that the Florida Oceanographic Society (www.floridaoceanographic.org) still had numerous copies available for sale. The contact person was Mark Perry (markperry@...), who then redirected me to Pam Sweeney (pamsweeney@...) who was the person in charge of the sales, and I believe the person that you should contact in order to buy the publication. The book costed $20 US Dollars plus postage. I don’t know if there are still copies available, or if the contacts are still the correct ones, but maybe it is worth a try.

who then redirected me to Pam Sweeney (pamsweeney@...)
who was the person in charge of the sales, and I believe the person that you
should contact in order to buy the publication. The book costed $20 US Dollars
plus postage. I don’t know if there are still copies available, or if the
contacts are still the correct ones, but maybe it is worth a try.

wasn’t sure of having the “right” Zachs at home. The
photocopies were a courtesy of Dr. Buzhinskaya through my colleague Javier
Sanchez, who travelled to the Museum of St. Petersburg some years ago. I would
like to thank to both for the trouble of searching for the paper and photocoping
it. There is an handwriting note in the first page stating 1934 as the
publication year, but I’m not sure if this is correct. Maybe 1934 was the
publication year of the 1933’s proceedings of something like that... I
have always found this paper dated as 1933 but maybe it would be worth to check
this, for questions of priority, as there is quite a few new taxa described in
the paper, as already noted by Geoff Read.

Dear all,

I have just scanned a couple of old publications for a friend, and we
thought that maybe they are of interest for somebody else. The papers are
scanned without the "search" option (I don't known how to do it), and are
uploaded in my free Mediafire account, so expect some advertising while
downloading them (that's why the account is free, anyway). I don't know if
these papers are still covered by copyright, so if someone of you holds the
copyrights or knows that they are still covered by copyrights, please, send
me an email and I will remove them immediately. Mediafire is quite easy to
use, so just follow the instructions.

The papers and links are:

Some 25
years ago I was sent a set of photonegatives (black and white) of the
paper, of which as far as I know the correct citation is given below,
by the library Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. If anyone has the
possibility to make a high resolution scan of those negatives, 2 pages
to the negative, and distribute that, I am happy to forward those
negatives. I only have a not too good print of the for me relevant
serpulids, as well as a Dutch translation of those
pages).

By the way, I would be very surprised if a
species from cold-temperate origin (Nort Japanese Seas) would occur in

There are over 20 new species in it, including some Polydora, and
the
maldanid species José Eriberto wants, then described in Asychis.
The
title and the journal name are variously seen in transliteration.

Zoological Record 1935 hardcopy simply has journal as:

Hi Barbara,

The original name is Cirratulus filiformis. In 1999 Mary Petersen transferred the taxon to Aphelochaeta. Thus use the combination A. filformis (Keferstein, 1862).

I have just changed the C. filiformis entry in WoRMS, World Register of Marine Species, to reflect this. It is currently the invalid name of the pair. There already was a valid name entry for A. filiformis. Hence the confusion. And 'homotypic synonym' status means only that there has been a simple nomenclature change for the same physical original specimen of Keferstein's (if it exists).

with Eusyllis i worked in the lab of Albrecht Fischer in Mainz, Germany and Eurythoe i had contact with while snorkeling in Honduras. So i secund that handling the latter is much more burning like fire on the skin, but seeing the luminescence is more like experiencing fireworks.

Its absolutly correct to choose less confusing common names in scientific publications, but actually i beliefe this won´t really let the term fireworm for Odontosyllis die in the use of common public use.

So its better to point out that this term exists, but is confusing and therefore usefule to use a more biunique term, than just "ignoring" it and creating insular solutions of new common names.

We imho have the scientific names because they are biunique and international, wrongly used common names or confusing common names are common names, because they are common ;).

Odontosyllis enopla is also known as the Bermuda Glow Worm, and there are
Glow Worm Cruises for tourists.

http://emilyanncrawford.blogspot.com/2009/06/bermuda-glow-worm.html

I was thinking I'd invent the term 'nightlight worms' for Odontosyllis
species in general (we have them in New Zealand too, and I have caught
them swarming in abundance on a few occasions), but the marine glowworm
seems a pretty good common name to me. There is no fire involved, whereas
(reputedly) quite a bit of fire is experienced after careless handling of
a live amphinomid. A similar usage to 'fiery' chili peppers.

Best to minimize use of all common names for groups probably. And
certainly best not to expect sharp logic in usage. There are no marine
bamboo plants for bamboo worms to eat (tenuously lookalike), and I don't
know what connection nereidids have with rags. Rag worms = ragged worms,
as against smooth-bodied earthworms? Lugworms? Don't know the etymology.
> Hi Geoff,
>
> you are absolutely right that the term fireworm is confusing, since it
is used in a different way.
> But actually "Bermuda fireworm" is actually the common name of
*Odontosyllis
> enopla*, which is also commonly used in non taxonomic papers.
>
> So it might be helpful to always point out that this term is a common name
> and not to be used in a way which leads to using it as english term for
> taxonomic group.
> help with identifying some very small worms that have invaded a
> paramecium culture that I have been maintaining for teaching. The
> culture is fresh water, but is far from clean, and includes input
> from various different sources, so it is next to impossible to trace
> where they came from. They are roughly a millimeter long, have
> definite segments with chaetae, no obvious eyes, and no external
> mouthparts. They are generally soft bodied and very flexible. A hard
> pharynx is visible (but not obvious in the photos), and they seem to
> be feeding on plant matter, rather than the Paramecia that surround
> them (I infer this from green matter in their guts, and because I
> think I saw them browsing on plant material, but never attacking a
> Paramecium). I showed them to our local annelid expert, Nechama
> Ben-Eliahu. She suspects they are archiannelids, but they don't fit
> in with any of the keys she has. I attach two photos, which I have
> scaled down for sending, but can provide higher resolution versions
> (and more photos) if anyone is interested. One photo is lower
> magnification and shows two individuals of slightly different sizes.
> The second photo is a hihger magbnification of the head region, with
> a Paramecium for scale.
>
> I would be happy for any help in identifying these critters.

Hi Geoff,

you are absolutely right that the term fireworm is confusing, since it is used in a different way.
But actually "Bermuda fireworm" is actually the common name of Odontosyllis enopla, which is also commonly used in non taxonomic papers.

So it might be helpful to always point out that this term is a common name and not to be used in a way which leads to using it as english term for taxonomic group.

kind regards

Sven

Hi all,

I was surprised to see a press release for a recent paper by Scripps
biologists repeatedly use the term 'fireworm' for an Odontosyllis syllid
with bioluminescence, as though it was the accepted term for this group of
worms. It sounds impressive. And in analogy with firefly (a beetle!)
perhaps?

Dear All,

Many thanks to all the people who replied to my query and sent me
additional material. Since the answers were all off-list, I will
summarize for those curious to hear the outcome. There is a general
consensus that these are members of the Aeolosomatidae, but difficult
to identify beyond that. Several people have sent keys or references,
and I will delve into these to see what I can conclude. The
Aeolosomatidae are meiofaunal annelids, though there is little
agreement in the literature about where they fit phylogenetically
(Oligochaeta or Polychaeta). Their most distinctive feature is the
presence of large red or orange epidermal glands. These are clear in
the worms I have, though not obvious in the monochrome image I sent.
They reproduce asexually by paratomy, which would explain why they are
suddenly so abundant in one culture.

If anyone is interested in this group, I can try to isolate some and
send them.

Dear annelid enthusiasts,

As a non-annelid specialist, I wonder if someone in this list can help
with identifying some very small worms that have invaded a paramecium
culture that I have been maintaining for teaching. The culture is
fresh water, but is far from clean, and includes input from various
different sources, so it is next to impossible to trace where they
came from. They are roughly a millimeter long, have definite segments
with chaetae, no obvious eyes, and no external mouthparts. They are
generally soft bodied and very flexible. A hard pharynx is visible
(but not obvious in the photos), and they seem to be feeding on plant
matter, rather than the Paramecia that surround them (I infer this
from green matter in their guts, and because I think I saw them
browsing on plant material, but never attacking a Paramecium). I
showed them to our local annelid expert, Nechama Ben-Eliahu. She
suspects they are archiannelids, but they don't fit in with any of the
keys she has. I attach two photos, which I have scaled down for
sending, but can provide higher resolution versions (and more photos)
if anyone is interested. One photo is lower magnification and shows
two individuals of slightly different sizes. The second photo is a
hihger magbnification of the head region, with a Paramecium for scale.

I would be happy for any help in identifying these critters.

Cheers,

Ariel

Dear Sara,

If you do not have it already you should use your library service to get
hold of the Kirtley monograph. It revises the Sabellariidae, and has a new
subfamily, Lygdaminae, for all sabellariids with 4 parathoracic segments,
including Lygdamis. Unfortunately the book may be difficult to obtain in
places, but someone may have fresh information on it subsequent to the
discussion we had in August this year on the list.

A Lygdamis described later and near to the Mediterranean is L. wirtzi from
shallow subtidal of Madeira & Canary I. Lygdamis muratus is British
Mediterranean Lygdamis in the Kirtley book.
