NHS 2010 - Beyond Newborn Hearing Screening: Infant and Childhood Hearing
in Science and Clinical Practice

The NHS 2010 will include Keynote addresses, free communications, massive
poster sessions, Workshops and a number of Satellite Events and Special

The wavelet transform, multiresolution analysis, EMD, and other space-frequency or space-scale approaches are now considered standard tools by researchers in image and signal processing. Promising practical results in machine vision and sensors for industrial applications and non destructive testing have been obtained, and a lot of ideas can be applied to industrial imaging projects.

This conference is intended to bring together practitioners, researchers, and technologists in machine vision, sensors, non destructive testing, signal and image processing to share recent developments in wavelet and multiresolution approaches. Papers emphasizing fundamental methods that are widely applicable to image processing, industrial inspection and other industrial applications are especially welcome.

hearing aid funding

Hello,

I just saw your post. Have you checked out Hearinghaven.com? They can
replace the faceplate for 50 bucks each. I think they can program a pair
of aids for 75 dollars, but make sure the make and model is one they have
the software and cables for in order to reprogram them.

If it's a total recasing, then I think it's 275 for each hearing aid.

Profound loss hearing aid options?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to say hi all!! First off, a little background on my loss before my questions:

Been hoh since I was around 4 years old (25 years now without blatantly giving away my age...hehe). Sensorineural loss. Left ear, profound, right ear moderate - profound. Wore analog all my life in my right ear. No hearing aid in the left because I'm told that hearing aids won't give any benefit because of how good my hearing is in my right ear. Switched to digital hearing aids in '04 for my right.

Digital has never sounded 100% right, no matter how many programming sessions occurred to adjust it. I didn't realize this until, by some fluke, my five year old digital crapped out on me a couple months ago.   Tried on my analog. Even though it was half the volume level of my digital, I was hearing sound out of my right ear that I hadn't heard since I made the switch. Everything was sooooo incredibly clear. Music went from ok to awesome.

Here's my latest audiogram (hasn't changed much over the past 25 years):

The suspicions that have been provided by my audie is that I only got a tactile response out of my left ear during the audiogram, rather than auditory. BUT, I could have sworn I heard the tone dagnabit. Some general observations made by my audie is that no hearing aid on the market will be able to help my left ear with speech without: 1. Nearing the pain threshold, meaning that I would experience discomfort as a result because of the dynamic range of voices. 2. Hearing environmental sounds only. 3. It would interfere with the quality of sound on my right.

So, I haven't tried any hearing aid in my left ear as a result. I try one in my left ear on for the first time next week and get to see how it really works. Some of my experiences in researching things online have lead me to believe that the above is not entirely correct, and that I may end up getting some comprehension out of my left ear, even if it's only environmental sounds. I know it depends on my hearing loss what I get from hearing aids. But, if my left ear is aidable I want to try any and all options that are available to me.

I guess my questions are all about my left ear:

1. Is there a hearing aid that will help such a loss without any of the above 3 observations taking place?
2. Is my left ear aidable without going through Cochlear Implant surgery?
3. How much of an aidable result would I be able to expect with any hearing aid in my left ear?

Research for Inner Ear Hair Cell Regeneration

Hello,
I have read that you are taking part on the stem cell research for hair cell regeneration for hearing loss. I am very interested in the study would you be able to provide me with addition information on your study? How long do you think it will take to have human clinical trials? I have partial hearing loss in my one ear due to exposure to loud noise an air bag, and it is really bothering me. I went to my ENT and I am trying out a hearing aid but I am not comfortable with it or the sound. The stem cell research for hair cell regeneration research is VERY important to me as well as it is going to be to million others.

ototoxicity and monitoring (including one article detailing a lawsuit in
TX where the judge found against a hospital despite lack of standards
for monitoring). I am in the process of setting up a monitoring program
at my hospital. It really helps to pinpoint one department to get your
foot in the door. Talk to some of the doctors to see about their
opinions. Out of six that I contacted, one department in underway for a
program (the cancer center) and another is talking to me (the pediatric
intesnive care unit). Anyhow, I will send you what I can. I have lit
lists on antibiotics and chemo drugs and monitoring in general. One
day I'd like to pursue further study on this topic - can you tell? Just
let me know what you need.

Independent reviews of digital hearing aids?

Did you ever find a review site for hearing aids? I am faced with the
same issue and am completely baffled as to the lack of good
information.

Just wondering. Audiologist all have opinions but they, of course,
have a vested interest called monetary gain to help guide their
recommendations.

I am wondering if anyone has seen cases of hearing loss following general

anesthesia. What has been the timeline of onset? Also, have any cases been

treated medically with any success?Does anyone know of cases associated

middle ear surgery ?  Does anyone know if a fluctuating sensorineural loss

can result from complications of anesthesia?  How about complications from

extreme rotation of the neck during surgery?

I just finished reading your Apr. 13, 2004 message entitled "Help with UltraQuiet please". And, by the way, I'm not associated in any way with the makers of UltraQuiet either. I have extremely debilitating, bilateral tinnitus and I'm looking for some real, effective help in getting it tamed down. Now, more than three years after having first tried UltraQuiet, you should be a prime source of information regarding it's effectiveness. Tell me all about your experience with it (both the good and the bad) to help me decide whether to try to find an audiologist or a physician who has access to this device. Beyond Newborn Hearing Screening: Infant and Childhood Hearing in Science and Clinical Practice.
June 19 - 21, 2008
Cernobbio (Como Lake), Italy

Colleagues and friends from all over the world will meet in Italy to discuss and share ideas,
models and results on the most recent research in hearing screening,
audiologic and medical diagnosis,
intervention for infants and children with hearing loss, as well as models
for hearing surveillance and outcomes for infants and children identified early.
Both basic scientific advances and clinical studies will be presented under
the form of platform communications and poster presentations.
To let delegates concentrate on the most important topics, the number of
concurrent oral Sessions will be limited to two.

As a specific component of the NHS, a special event is being planned,
a Guidelines Development Conference on Auditory Neuropathy (AN),
with state-of-the-art information on identification, diagnosis and management of children with AN.

pocket hearing aid

Hi,

I am sure you have found an answer to your posting by now, but I found a sound amplifier (pocket size, with a clip) at Walgreens for $15 dollars that acts like a hearing aid but costs much less. It comes with small headphones but is adaptable to any headphones you might prefer. My grandmother found the headphones that fit over the outside of your ear more comfortable than the smaller buds. problem: rattling sensation in ears

Did you ever figure anything out about this? Both my ears were this way all through high school and into college. One day I had my ears cleaned out (with forced water) and one of them STOPPED this sensation. That was about 10 years ago and now the ear that still rattles is driving me crazy!

Does anyone know what might cause a rattling sensation in the

ear?  At certain frequencies and intensities of sounds (and

this varies from day to day) I feel a sensation of physical

rattling, just behind the ear drum.  I saw an audiologist

and he said he didn't know what was causing it, and otherwise

the ears were diagnosed as normal.  Any ideas?  It is particularly

set off by high pitched piano keys or vibrating things like

electric shavers.

hydrocephalus and hearing loss

My company is interested in diagnostic tests for hydrocephalus. We have found very little literature about the effects of hydrocephalus on ABR. I found a posting from you that appears to address this issue:

Maybe an ABR would be helpful. If the reflex decay is from hydrocephalus

the fourth ventrical is probably involved (compressing the lower pontine

region where CN VII and crossed AR pathways reside). The ABR is

particularly sensitive to this compression effect and may be used to

monitor changes in function associated with changes in ventricular

pressure. It would be real helpful if you had a pre-eppisode ABR. Maybe

the neurosurgeon got one after the last shunt?
