The Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Program "EuroSPIN
<http://www.kth.se/studies/phd/eurospin?l=en_UK> " (European Study Programme
in Neuroinformatics) is inviting applications from students having a solid
background in mathematics, physics, computer sciences, biochemistry or
neuroscience (on a master level or equivalent), in all cases with computer
science skills. Documented interest in research like activities (e.g.
demonstrated in the form of master thesis work, or participation in research
related activities) is of large importance. Also fluency in English is
requested.

Neuroinformatics combines neuroscience and informatics research to develop
and apply computational tools and approaches that are essential for
understanding the structure and function of the brain.
Four partners participate in EuroSPIN:

- <http://www.csc.kth.se/forskning/cb/> KTH Royal Institute of Technology,
(ALUF), Germany
These four partners are all research leaders in the Neuroinformatics field,
but they have complementary strengths. In addition, two associated partners,
the Honda Research Institute and Nordita, participate.

Each student will spend most of the time at two of the partner
<http://www.kth.se/studies/phd/eurospin/partners?l=en_UK> universities, and
also receive a joint (or double) PhD degree following a successful
completion of the studies. The mobility periods, as well as the courses a
student will follow, are tailored individually based on: a) the PhD students
background; b) which constellations of partners that are involved, as well
as c) the specific research project. During the PhD period each student has
one main supervisor from each of the two universities that grant the PhD
degree.

During the application process, the students are asked to indicate their
preferences with regard to constellations of
preferred project ideas/areas can be indicated and motivated.

There are excellent scholarship
<http://www.kth.se/studies/phd/eurospin/scholarships-fees?l=en_UK>
opportunities for students accepted to an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate
programme. A stipend or employment contract will be given to all selected
PhD students during the study time, which is between 3-4 years.

Deadline for Application: December 15, 2009.

We are seeking applicants for a PhD position at the University of St
Andrews, Scotland. A successful applicant would receive funding to cover
fees and a stipend as outlined in 'Important Note on Funding', below.

* * * *

EVOLUTION AND FUNCTION OF CYANOBACTERIAL GENES AND GENOMES

Supervisors:
Dr Daniel Barker, University of St Andrews, and Professor Geoffrey Codd,
University of Dundee.

This project will improve knowledge of the evolution, metabolism,
ecotoxicological status and biotechnological potential of cyanobacteria
by the development and application of bioinformatics algorithms.
Cyanobacteria are a metabolically diverse group of photosynthetic
prokaryotes of global distribution. They play a crucial role in
biogeochemical cycles (oxygen, carbon, nitrogen), produce toxins which
present major health hazards to humans and animals, yet also contain
metabolites with therapeutic and biotechnological applications,
including biofuels. At least 48 cyanobacterial genomes have been
sequenced. However, the function of many of the genes in their genomes
remains unknown. This represents a major gap in biological knowledge
which would be difficult to fill by traditional approaches. We have
developed a comparative, bioinformatics procedure to delimit groups of
genes which are functionally linked, on the basis of correlated gain and
loss of those genes from genomes. This must be vastly improved, to also
model gene-phenotype and gene-environment interactions, and applied to
cyanobacteria. The project would involve research in computational

We are seeking applicants for a PhD position at the University of St
Andrews, Scotland.

The project would involve research in computational
comparative genomics. Results will be of interest to researchers in
bioinformatics, environmental and health sciences and in biotechnology.

A successful candidate would receive funding (covering fees and stipend)
from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and Marine Alliance

Dear Bionet Staff,

Would you post the following ad of postdoct positions on your website?
Many thanks!

Postdoctoral Positions in Neuroscience and Drosophila Neurobiology

Department of Neurobiology, University of Massachusetts Medical School

Two NIH-funded postdoctoral positions are available to enthusiastic
young scientists, for the study of neural signaling events in both
mammalian and Drosophila systems.

Successful candidates will have the following choices of research
direction.

1) Human genetic studies implicate that a new Ca2+/Calmodulin-binding
transcription factor CAMTA1 suppresses brain tumorigenesis and
facilitate memory formation. We are planning to generate a knock-out
mouse from existing ES cells, and characterize the cellular mechanism of
CAMTA1 function using in vitro neuronal cultures.

2) By isolating new Drosophila mutants, we are studying how
abnormalities in the signaling and trafficking of rhodopsin, a
light-stimulated GPCR, lead to degeneration of photoreceptor neurons in
the fly eye.

3) Using Drosophila mutants to study functions and the underlying
mechanisms of visual glia.

Additional information on our researches can be found at the website:
http://www.umassmed.edu/neurobiology/faculty/li_hs.cfm
<http://www.umassmed.edu/neurobiology/faculty/li_hs.cfm> .

We expect the candidates have strong experience in mouse genetics and
neuronal culture, or in Drosophila neurobiology. Training on
electrophysiology is a plus. Application materials, including a cover
letter describing research interest, a copy of CV and contact
information of three references, should be sent to
Hong-Sheng.Li@... <mailto:Hong-Sheng.Li@...> .

Boston, MA

The Molecular Cardiology Research Institute, Tufts Medical Center,
Boston, invites post-doctoral applications for a position to study
hormonal regulation of vascular function and disease. Clinical studies
support that an excess of the hormone aldosterone promotes vascular
remodeling and atherosclerosis and that inhibition of aldosterone
interaction with the Mineralocorticoid Receptor decreases mortality,
heart attacks, and strokes. The Jaffe lab is investigating the
molecular mechanisms by which MR-activation regulates vascular function

A highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow is sought with prior
experience in cell and molecular biology and mouse models. The
successful applicant will work closely with the Principal Investigator
on research projects studying the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms
controlled by vascular Mineralocorticoid Receptors and their role in
vascular function and disease. The laboratory uses state of the art
biochemical, molecular, and cell-biologic assays and mouse models of
vascular injury and atherosclerosis to address clinically relevant
questions in vascular biology. As needed, the individual will be
required to independently develop protocols and establish new
methodologies in the laboratory.

MD, PhD or both required. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
as this position is funded via an NIH institutional training grant.

The Molecular Cardiology Research Institute (MCRI) is an internationally
known institute with over $45M in funding that includes 17 principal

A Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship is available in the Department of
Biological Sciences at the
University of Alabama to work on an interdisciplinary project at
Toolik Lake Arctic Research Station (www.uaf.edu/toolik). The
student’s research interests should focus on application of stable
isotopes to plant ecophysiology, ecosystem physiology, or plant
ecology. The project will focus on developing a comprehensive
understanding of winter physiological processes for two tundra
ecosystems. The student will have the opportunity to interact with
scientists from the University
of Alabama, Florida International University and the Arctic LTER.
Working knowledge of stable
isotope ratio mass spectrometry is required and familiarity with LI-
COR photosynthetic and
Campbell Scientific equipments is a plus.

Northern latitudes are thought to be sequestering CO2 emitted from
anthropogenic activities.
However, the status of these ecosystems as a global sink of C in the
future hinges upon the
physiological responses of ecosystem components to changes in
climate. There is overwhelming
evidence for rapid climate change in the Arctic. Changes include the
physical environment,
changes in carbon balance, vegetation change. Furthermore, warming in
the high latitudes is
predicted to predominantly occur in the winter, and climate data
support that prediction.
However, the vast majority of research on tundra vegetation has
focused on physiological
processes during the short 2-3 month growing season, with only a
handful of studies of
physiological processes during the 9-10 month cold season. Although
the rates of these
processes are low, summed over the long cold season they are extremely
important. A
comprehensive understanding of cold-season physiological processes of
tundra vegetation is
critically needed given the large potential for further climate
changes in the Arctic.

This is a fully funded assistantship that includes: stipend, health
insurance, travel and living
accommodations during the research season at Toolik Lake. Interested
students should email
pdfs of 1) a current Curriculum Vita, 2) statement of research
interest, 3) names, phone number
