Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Vascular Biology

The Molecular Cardiology Research Institute, Tufts Medical Center,
Boston, invites post-doctoral applications for a position to study
hormonal regulation of vascular function and disease. Clinical studies
support that an excess of the hormone aldosterone promotes vascular
remodeling and atherosclerosis and that inhibition of aldosterone
interaction with the Mineralocorticoid Receptor decreases mortality,
heart attacks, and strokes. The Jaffe lab is investigating the
molecular mechanisms by which MR-activation regulates vascular function
in order to identify new therapeutic targets to prevent or treat
cardiovascular diseases in humans.

A highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow is sought with prior
experience in cell and molecular biology and mouse models. The
successful applicant will work closely with the Principal Investigator
on research projects studying the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms
controlled by vascular Mineralocorticoid Receptors and their role in
vascular function and disease. The laboratory uses state of the art
biochemical, molecular, and cell-biologic assays and mouse models of
vascular injury and atherosclerosis to address clinically relevant
questions in vascular biology. As needed, the individual will be
required to independently develop protocols and establish new
methodologies in the laboratory.

MD, PhD or both required. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
as this position is funded via an NIH institutional training grant.

The Molecular Cardiology Research Institute (MCRI) is an internationally
known institute with over $45M in funding that includes 17 principal

join the FlyBase team in the Dept. of Molecular & Cellular Biology at
Harvard University, Cambridge, under the direction of Prof. William
Gelbart. This is a full-time staff position.

Job description:
Curational responsibilities at the Harvard site include the scanning and
abstracting of analysis of current literature on the molecular biology
of Drosophila, annotation and analysis of the Drosophila melanogaster
genome, coordination of the inclusion of high- throughput molecular
datasets into FlyBase, and design of improved interfaces for providing
molecular data to the user scientific research community. Curators work
as a part of a team, interacting with biologists at other FlyBase sites,
and coordinating with software engineers to develop and improve
software. Curators also interface with the scientific community,
assisting users on-line and at research conference workshops.

FlyBase is constantly evolving, seeking both to improve and to expand
its role within the Drosophila and wider scientific communities. The
ideal applicant will be enthusiastic about participating in this
process, bringing to the FlyBase group expertise and ideas concerning
emerging directions in Drosophila biology and genomic/proteomic analysis.

Required Education, Experience, Skills:
Ph.D. in molecular biology or genetics. Experience with molecular
genetics and Drosophila biology are essential.

Our group has recently created a whole mouse cryo-imaging system which
gives 100+GB, micron-scale images of a whole mouse with single cell
sensitivity for fluorescently labeled cells. There are a multitude of
exciting new applications in stem cells, cancer, nano-drug delivery,
assessment of disease, and quantitative image quality. We are faced
with a multitude of image processing, analysis, and visualization
problems. For example, we have recently created a multi-scale viewing
program which allows us to view the entire data set on the screen and
zoom down to even a single cell. Persons will be expected to publish
papers and assist on research proposals. We are principally seeking
post doctoral researchers with a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering,
electrical engineering, or computer science. Experience with image
analysis, animal experiments, optical imaging, and/or medical imaging
technologies are a plus. However, we will consider very strong,
determined candidates with other PhD training who want to learn about
these important new technologies.

Sr/Int Process Engineer - Enzyme

Scope:

Iogen Corporation is looking for self-motivated, enthusiastic process
engineers who are interested in applying their engineering expertise in
the development of a leading edge renewable fuels technology.

Successful candidates will become members of the engineering team
responsible for the scale-up and design of the world's first
commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant. The role will focus on
process development, scale-up, and generating the necessary data needed
to execute a design. As well, they will support senior engineers in
activities related to the scale-up and design of the various process
operating units that comprise the commercial ethanol plant.

Duties & Responsibilities:

* Lead or participate in the process design of fermentation plant
operation. Key responsibilities include establishing scale-up
methodologies, managing vendor equipment trials, managing field
evaluations in current demonstration facilities, data analysis, and
process optimization.
* Assist senior engineers in conducting studies and executing
process design for capital upgrade projects. This would include:
analysis of different process configurations, mass and energy balances,
preparation of PFDs and P&IDs, equipment specifications, HAZOP studies,
capital and operating cost estimates risk analysis, and preparation of
SOPs, start-up and commissioning and operator training.
* Assist senior engineers in managing outside consultants
responsible for preparing technology packages.
* Participate as a member of the technical cross-functional team
alongside Process R&D and Manufacturing.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a B.Sc. in chemical or bio-chemical engineering and
will have three to ten years of process engineering experience,
preferably in the pharmaceutical, chemical, food, beverage or other
biotechnology/fermentation-related industries.

In addition, the following qualifications are required:

* Experience in industrial scale unit operations with an emphasis
on fermentation, propogation, solid-liquid separations, membrane
separations, mixing or solid handling.
* Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies.
* Ability to innovate in both the technology development and
process operations areas.

The following qualifications would be considered assets:

* Strong interpersonal skills.

2010 the Research School in Biology From embryo to old age: the cell
biology and genetics of health and disease will be offering a high-level

participating research groups use microbial, plant and animal model systems

Overview:
The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON, Inc.), a non-profit
science corporation dedicated to understanding how changes in climate, land
use and invasive species impact ecology. We are currently planning the NEON
project - an observatory comprising more than 60 atmospheric, environmental
and biological monitoring experiments distributed throughout twenty domains
across the United States, Hawaii, Alaska & the Caribbean. The Observatory
is monitored and controlled in real-time from our headquarters in Boulder,
Colorado.

Term of Position:

This position will be funded for one year initially with the intention of
transition to a full-time staff scientist on the NEON science team.

Position Summary:

The Aquatic Ecologist/ Biogeochemist will be responsible for design and
development of the freshwater biogeochemistry components of the NEON
Observatory including: procedures and protocols for data collection and lab
processing; piloting instrument installation; QA/QC; field-crew training
program; and analytical laboratory requirements.

Essential Responsibilities and Goals for the First Year:

* Develop detailed sampling designs and methodologies for collection
and processing of water and sediment in streams, ponds, and subsurface wells
* Define sample methods for stream reaeration rating curves
* Analyze water and sediment chemistry data from NEON aquatic sites
* Collaborate with NEON engineers and scientists to pilot the
installation of in-situ instruments
* Refine the scientific rationale for biogeochemical measurements,
instruments, and methods
* Co-develop data QA/QC and field-training programs
* Co-develop research to assess chemical and isotopic composition of
freshwater organisms
* Participate in the larger NEON science community, including
independent research and collaborations

Required Experience:

* Demonstrated field-based experience in freshwater streams and/or
ponds of North America
* 3-5 years research experience in aquatic ecology, with emphasis in
freshwater biogeochemistry.
* Experience working with in-situ automated instruments.
* Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative scientific or
engineering enterprise.

Education:

. PhD in aquatic ecology, aquatic biogeochemistry or related
freshwater field. Specialization in the biological-chemical linkages of
freshwater ecosystems.

Preferred Experience:

. Ability or desire to write technical documents

. Experience working with federal or state agencies, engineers,
and/or computer engineers.

. Experience developing QA/QC programs and working with large
datasets preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

* Record of excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to work independently, and as part of an active science team
* Desire to work collaboratively with engineers and scientists
* Proficient scientific and technical writing
* Proficiency in analyses that correlate biological data with abiotic
variables and ability to perform such analyses within a geospatial framework
* Undertake responsibilities beyond those associated with individual
Observatory tasks
* Travel to domains at least 6x/year in the 2010

Physical Requirements:

* The candidate may be exposed to conditions in the field, and
therefore must be able to traverse uneven ground such as dirt banks, stream
beds, and shallow ponds carrying equipment and materials up to 40 lbs.

A postdoctoral/research associate position is available immediately in
the Department of Biochemistry, Tufts University School of Medicine,
Boston, MA. The position involves the characterization of the E6 protein
of papillomavirus and its inhibitors using biophysical and biochemical
techniques. Applicants should be highly motivated, self-starters with
strong bench skills who can work independently and as part of a team.
The goal is understand the interaction of the E6 protein with its human
cellular binding partners and to optimize low molecule weight
inhibitors. Candidates for the postdoctoral fellow position must have a
PhD degree in Biological sciences (biochemistry or closely related
fields) with a strong research background. The candidate should have
experience in protein purification, the characterization of molecular
interactions, NMR spectroscopy and possibly mammalian cell culture.

Plant Sensory Systems is a rapidly growing agricultural biotech
company in the Baltimore/Washington DC area that uses its
understanding of plant sensory systems to optimize agricultural
traits. We currently have available two postdoctoral research
positions in the area of plant molecular biology. The successful
candidates will be responsible for conducting molecular and biological
analyses on transgenic crop plants and evaluating their physiological
performance in greenhouse trials. The salary range for these positions

Ph.D. Assistanship Stable Isotope Plant Ecophysiology

A Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship is available in the Department of
Biological Sciences at the
University of Alabama to work on an interdisciplinary project at
Toolik Lake Arctic Research Station (www.uaf.edu/toolik). The
student’s research interests should focus on application of stable
isotopes to plant ecophysiology, ecosystem physiology, or plant
ecology. The project will focus on developing a comprehensive
understanding of winter physiological processes for two tundra
ecosystems. The student will have the opportunity to interact with
scientists from the University
of Alabama, Florida International University and the Arctic LTER.
Working knowledge of stable
isotope ratio mass spectrometry is required and familiarity with LI-
COR photosynthetic and
Campbell Scientific equipments is a plus.

Northern latitudes are thought to be sequestering CO2 emitted from
anthropogenic activities.
However, the status of these ecosystems as a global sink of C in the
future hinges upon the
physiological responses of ecosystem components to changes in
climate. There is overwhelming
evidence for rapid climate change in the Arctic. Changes include the
physical environment,
changes in carbon balance, vegetation change. Furthermore, warming in
the high latitudes is
predicted to predominantly occur in the winter, and climate data
support that prediction.
However, the vast majority of research on tundra vegetation has
focused on physiological
processes during the short 2-3 month growing season, with only a
handful of studies of
physiological processes during the 9-10 month cold season. Although
the rates of these
processes are low, summed over the long cold season they are extremely
important. A
comprehensive understanding of cold-season physiological processes of
tundra vegetation is
critically needed given the large potential for further climate
changes in the Arctic.

GENETIC AND MOLECULAR EPIDEMIOLOGY
The AZCC Cancer Prevention and Control Program is seeking applications for postdoctoral research training in the area of genetic and molecular epidemiology. The position is funded through the R25 Training Grant supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The goal of the R25 Training Grant is to train successful researchers in the field of cancer prevention and control.

Working closely with senior investigators, the fellow will participate in ongoing NIH/NCI funded projects to develop his/her own clinical/translational research. Current research interests of faculty involved in this program include genetic pathway analyses, gene-lifestyle factor interactions, and dietary intake related to the development of colorectal adenomas, the precursors to colorectal cancer. The successful candidate will be grounded in a multidisciplinary approach to cancer prevention and control through formal coursework, seminar series, conferences, and interactions with scientific mentors. Among the attractions of this position are the potential to work with top level scientists in genetic/molecular epidemiology and to interact with a wide array of scientists from various disciplines, including basic and population sciences from a number of departments and colleges in the University of Arizona. Candidates must be willing to work independently as well as in a team s!

Under general direction, the position designs and executes research

staining systems, and knowledge of IHC reagent technology.

The lab of Prof. Jianjun Hu in the Computer Science Department at University
of South Carolina (USC) is seeking an enthusiastic, highly-motivated
postdoctoral research associate working on protein motif analysis. The
research project will be to computationally discover and analyze all
sequential or structural motifs at the protein levels. We are especially
interested in discovering protein sorting motifs. The postdoc will have the
opportunity to do cutting-edge interdisciplinary work in a close
collaboration with biologists and other bioinformatician. Bioinformatics is
one of the strongest research areas in the department with 5 faculty working
on phylogenetics, protein structure prediction and folding, DNA sequence
analysis and etc

Applicants should have a Ph.D. with strong computing skills (e.g. R, Perl,
C/C++), basic molecular biology background, and strong interests in
bioinformatics. Experience in motif discovery, sequence analysis,
statistical inference, machine learning and data mining is preferred.
Well-suited candidates are likely to have Ph.D. experience in computational
biology, applied math, computer science, or a similar discipline. The ideal
candidate will be familiar with molecular biology (DNA/protein sequences and
structures), but outstanding applicants who are new to the field will also
be considered. Excellent communication skills and good teamwork spirit are
essential.

Full Description:

Silent in vegetative tissues but extraordinarily active during
embryogenesis, the phaseolin (phas) seed storage protein promoter has
been used in many groundbreaking studies. Current research seeks an
understanding of molecular mechanisms by which phas is turned on and off
(Plant Cell. 2006, 18:119-32; Plant Mol Biol. 2008, 66:233-44). We have
shown that both genetic and epigenetic systems are involved, with
ABA-mediated transcriptional activation following ordered epigenetic
remodeling of chromatin architecture over the phas promoter. New NSF
funding provides an opportunity for a talented and enthusiastic
postdoctoral to demonstrate what protein components are recruited by the
B3 domain effector PvALF to achieve remodeling. The project includes
Arabidopsis transformation and the use of inducible systems. Candidates
with demonstrated experience in ChIP assays and good bioinformatic
skills will be at an advantage.

that will collaborate with experimental researchers to enable new insights

*Job Description*
A ground floor opportunity for researchers interested in new directions for
systems and computational biology is currently open. The task includes
curation and computational validation of models of metabolic and signal
transduction pathways. The work will involve deriving mechanisms/reactions
from relevant published literature and reports of experimental results to
populate knowledge bases of metabolic and/or signaling reactions.

The Pathway Logic system (http://pl.csl.sri.com/) will be used to analyze
and validate the resulting growing network of reactions. This system is
based on a novel approach to model biological pathways using logic-based
methods developed to model concurrent processes. Networks can be navigated
and queried interactively to gain an understanding of the interconnections
and possible outcomes. Curators will work with experimental biologists to
fill in gaps in pathways of interest. Results of testing hypotheses
generated by the computational validation and analysis will be used to
refine the models.

Training in the use of Pathway Logic will be provided.

*Requirements*
Candidates should have Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a biology oriented
discipline. In particular, they should have substantial understanding of
cellular biology and the experimental methods used in the study of cellular
processes such as metabolics or cell signaling. The candidate should be
comfortable using computers, and have an interest in using computational
methods to develop models of biological processes. Experience with
programming, formal methods, computational modeling or bioinformatics tools
is desirable, but not required. Knowledge about immune systems is
particularly welcome.

Research at SRI is highly interactive and collaborative, and we expect
applicants to contribute to our intellectually open culture. There are
extensive opportunities for collaboration within SRI, federal agencies and
with universities. Opportunities exist for holding adjunct appointments at a
local university. Successful candidates will be expected to obtain national

We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist with experience using biochemistry and molecular biology approaches.. In particular, experience in transcription is highly valued. A proven track record of publication is required. The successful candidate will undertake a project in transcriptional proteomics where the dynamics and modifications of protein complexes will be analyzed and the functional and mechanistic of the results will be pursued. Our laboratory uses a chromatography based proteomics technology named multidimensional protein identification technology (MudPIT) and we carry out quantitative proteomic analyses in all of our studies (http://www.stowers-institute.org/labs/Washburnlab.asp). We are well equipped with multiple linear ion trap (LTQ) mass spectrometers and LTQ-Orbirtrp mass spectrometers. We have a powerful computational environment for data analysis. The laboratory is fully equipped for biochemistry and molecular biology studies. In addition, the Stowers Institute (www.stowers.org<http://www.stowers.org>) has outstanding technology centers in bioinformatics, cytometry, imaging, molecular biology, and microarrys. We use these tools in a variety of our studies. The successful candidate does not need any protein mass spectrometry experience and will learn these technologies while in the laboratory.

The successful candidate will have completed or will shortly complete a Ph.D., and will have a strong publication record.
