from the editor

Dear Reader,

"If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called
research, would it?"

So said German physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955).

We, as researchers working in the field of Cell and Molecular Biology,
usually start our research from scratch with so many questions in mind
and with heart palpitations in throat. When we are done, we
desperately look for a colleague to bounce with us on the lab floor.
The paper has already been written in our mind from the beginning, but
here comes the tingling question: Where to publish, or even more
importantly, where and how to publish with minimum pain?

Since publications indexed in SCI are required for the applications to
academic institutions and for academic increments, authors -as a
matter of fact- prefer to submit their manuscripts specifically to
those journals. However, in the long run this situation may leave the
other newly developing -but certainly dedicated- journals out of play.
I personally believe that it is of great importance to support
developing journals by submitting original papers for publication.

Journal of Cell and Molecular Biology was first published in 2002 by
Haliç University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences. On the 10th year of
Haliç University, the Journal celebrates its 6th volume. Journal of
Cell and Molecular Biology has a broad range of interest including
cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, neurobiology
and bioinformatics. In fact, today we are experiencing great technical
and scientific developments worldwide, which necessitate the
cooperation of almost all research areas. Therefore the Journal aims
to encourage publications with an interdisciplinary approach. In
addition, independent and international peer-review system guarantees
that all studies appearing in Journal of Cell and Molecular Biology
are of high standard.

Leaving five years behind, the Journal is now indexed in ULAKBIM,
BIOSIS, EBSCO, DOAJ, EMBASE, CAPCAS and EMBiology . We would like to
thank both the authors who have submitted their manuscripts to the
Journal and the referees who have carefully evaluated the works
submitted. With the continuous help of distinguished researchers and
expert referees, we will further improve the quality of our Journal.
Therefore, I am confident that the Journal of Cell and Molecular
Biology is a young yet valuable and promising scientific journal. I
would like to take this opportunity and invite the scientists working
in the field of Cell and Molecular Biology to publish their work in
our Journal.

We would be more than pleased to hear from you with any comments or
thoughts you may have at jcmb@... ( web page http://jcmb.halic.edu.tr)

Kind regards,

Nagehan Ersoy, PhD
February 13, 2006

"Recently we heard of another disturbing experience. Michael Kirk-Duggan was
a retired professor of business law and computer science. He was diagnosed
with probable Alzheimer's disease that was progressing very rapidly. He went
to his 50th college reunion with a sign around his neck that said, "I'm
Mike. I have Alzheimer's disease." At his youngest daughter's wedding, he
did not recognize people he had known more than 20 years.
His decline made it clear that he would need long-term nursing care. But
then he read our column about statins and memory problems. With his doctor's
awareness, he discontinued the Zocor he had been taking. Although it took
many months, he gradually regained his memory and cognitive ability. He is
back to reading three newspapers a day and is sharp as a tack. A complete
neurological workup showed no signs of Alzheimer's disease."

Part of the introductory text:

"Can cholesterol-lowering drugs affect memory? That is a question we have
wrestled with for nearly six years.

It started when we received a letter from a woman who complained that
several months after starting on Lipitor she was "having trouble remembering
names and coming up with the right word. At dinner once I said, 'Please pass
the elephant' though I wanted the bread."

We didn't know what to make of this concern because we could find nothing in
the medical literature connecting statin-type medicines like Lipitor to
memory loss. Before long, however, letters started pouring in."

<read more at the link provided>

We became alarmed when we received this story:

"I am a retired family doctor and former astronaut. Two years ago at my
annual astronaut physical at Johnson Space Center (JSC) I was started on
Lipitor. Six weeks later I experienced my first episode of total global
amnesia lasting six hours. They couldn't find anything wrong with me so I
suspected Lipitor and discontinued it.

"Other doctors and pharmacists were unaware of similar problems. Believing
it must have been a coincidence, I restarted Lipitor a year later. After six
weeks I landed in the ER with a twelve-hour episode of total global amnesia.
I am more convinced than ever of a Lipitor relationship."

The astronaut-physician is Duane Graveline, M.D. In response to his
experience, we heard from other readers who had suffered episodes of total
global amnesia while taking Lipitor, Zocor or similar drugs.

Total global amnesia is a temporary but frightening loss of memory. Dr.
Graveline forgot that he was a physician or an astronaut and didn't even
recognize his wife. He has summarized his experiences in a new book called
"Statin Drugs: Side Effects and the Misguided War on Cholesterol" (available
on the Web at: www.spacedoc.net).
Q. In 1999 shortly after I began taking Lipitor I was working at the church
Guidelines for cholesterol control have become much more stringent. For
and runs the Cycles Research Institute Discussion Forum. To use the
cycles forum please go to
we delete it all anyway.

Some background on the Foundation for the Study of Cycles

"Our mission is to discover, understand, and explain the true nature and
origin of cycles, thereby solving the mystery of recurrent rhythmic
phenomena, as has been observed in both the natural and the social
sciences, and while so doing, to instruct others, and to apply this new
knowledge for the greater good of all life."

* First, to discover the causes and conditions for already observed and
cataloged cyclic and rhythmic behaviors.

* Second, to classify discovered causes and conditions with the physical
sciences.

* Third, to incorporate these causes and conditions into the mainstream
of modern scientific theory and knowledge.

Edward R Dewey studied data from hundreds of different disciplines and
concluded that there are no fields of study in which the time series do
not have cycles present. For example, there is a list of reported cycle
by period at http://www.cyclesresearchinstitute.org/indexlength.html or
by time series name at
http://www.cyclesresearchinstitute.org/indexname.html with each
containing more than 1000 cycles determinations. Dewey then concluded
that ...

"..., insofar as cycles are meaningful, all science that has been
developed in the absence of cycle knowledge is inadequate and partial.
Thus, if cyclic forces are real, any theory of economics, or sociology,
or history, or medicine, or climatology that ignores non-chance rhythms
is manifestly incomplete, as medicine was before the discovery of germs."
- Edward R. Dewey (Cycles Magazine July 1967)

For an excellent summary of the results of decades of cycles research
please see Dewey's "The Case for Cycles" at

Apparently there is an issue with St. Jude's silver coated Silzone heart
valves leaking around the seal. This problem can make the heart less
effective even causing heart failure. If you go to
https://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/case/silzone_mechanical_heart_valves
there is more information on this and other problems with the heart valves
as well as what can be done about it. There is also a free case evaluation
provided for those who may have been effected by this. I hope that this
might be of some help.

Within just a minute or two of opening my mouth to speak, I am completely
out of breath and ready to "black out". It feels like a stroke ---- but
maybe something different. I have trouble speaking and I do slur my words
just a little. I am only in my 40s. I have less trouble when I am doing
mild exercise . and GREAT trouble the moment I try to speak.

I have had major neck surgery Cervical 4,5,and 6 with titanium plate and
bone fusion. Also, I have a thoracic 10-11 disc compressing my spinal cord
where the lungs and heart attach. I am recently treating for sleep apnea
with CPAP. My oxygen levels drop to about 82%. Also, my glucose levels are
frequently hypoglycemia around 50. Also, have some asthma.

The MRI of my brain seemed OK except for dehydration. A more detailed
SPECT scan of the brain showed concussion injuries with severe low oxygen.

Since the problem has gotten worse since neck and thorax problems, I am
wondering on the likelihood of the problem being the vagus nerve being
affected by neck surgery scar tissue. Or, maybe the culprit is the
thoracic disc compressing the spinal cord wehre the lungs and heart attach.

I am trying to figure out how to get this properly diagnosed without running
around to tons of different specialists like cardiologists, pulmonologists,
MRI radiologists, neurologists, etc.. Is there some sort of flowchart /
decision tree that can help me rule certain things out or go down a certain
medical specialty?

[Cardiovascular-research] Folic acid lowers blood concentrations of homocysteine

Folic acid lowers blood concentrations of homocysteine

A new study published in the October 2005 issue of the American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that a dosage of at least 800 mcg of
folic acid is needed to maximally reduce plasma homocysteine concentrations.
Increased blood homocysteine levels are considered to be a risk factor for
cardiovascular disease. This meta-analysis of 25 studies evaluated the
effect of various doses of folic acid on plasma homocysteine. Doses of 800
micrograms provided a significantly greater reduction in plasma homocysteine
compared to 400 micrograms. Supplementation with 800 micrograms folic acid
per day was associated with a 23 percent reduction in homocysteine, compared
to a 20 percent reduction associated with 400 micrograms. A dosage of 200
mcg was associated with a 13 percent reduction. Higher doses provided only a
slightly greater benefit. The addition of vitamin B12 was associated with a
synergistic benefit. Although some fortified foods contribute to daily
intake in the U.S., many multi-nutrient supplements provide just 400 mcg of
folic acid. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 82, No. 4, 806-812,
