Dear Sirs,

We are a group of students from the Masters in Innovation and Technology
Entrepreneurship of *Porto University* in Portugal. We are currently making
the market evaluation for a patent from Porto University that refers
to a “*Hyperbaric
system for the long-term study and conservation of intermediate and
deep-depth aquatic organisms*”.

This new system consists on a hyperbaric chamber, dimensioned according to
specifications, working on open-circuit. The major advantages of this new
system, when comparing to others, are:

   - Competitive price;
   - Deep depth simulation conditions;
   - Wide range of working pressure and volume;
   - Control of the necessary environmental conditions (possibility of
   changing the necessary parameters according to the research needs);
   - Preservation of aquatic organisms for long periods of time;
   - Possibility to feed the aquatic organisms inside the chamber;

We would kindly like to ask for 10 minutes of your time to answer to the
following survey:

* http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=OzmnbNUqLl2eZ_2bILccWuLA_3d_3d*

(Please click on the link above)

We would also like to inform you that we have already one system working at
CIMAR in Porto, Portugal. The existing pressurizing system was designed to
study seawater fish and it enabled the automatic simulation of vertical
migrations with the capacity to maintain them for long periods under stable
water parameters, allowing to perform studies on the physiological effects
of cyclic hydrostatic changes.

We appreciate very much If you can send this email to your professional
contacts or collegues that you think that can also fill in this survey,
helping us making this market study the most correct one. Thanks in advance!

If you are interested in knowing more about this system please contact us
There is interest among biologists who study various Arthropods
for a shared public news and discussion group. Please comment if
you would like to see a new Arthropod mailing list.

Values of sharing biology discussion and news among those who
study insects and crustaceans has been noted at recent venues,
including the Arthropod Genomics Symposia
(http://www.k-state.edu/agc/), Entomological Society meetings

BIOSCI/Bionet (www.bio.net) continues to serve such bioscience
community news needs, as it has since its inception 20
years ago by Michael Ashburner and others. Community group
lists at Bionet include DROSOPHILA, ARABIDOPSIS, MAIZE,
Medicago, CELEGANS, CHLAMYDOMONAS, Mycology, YEAST, and ZBRAFISH.
Bionet currently is maintained at Indiana University by Don
Gilbert, a genome informatician specializing in arthropods.

There are related mailing lists (see below). The uses and content of
this proposed list would presumably be similar. Please comment
whether you believe existing lists cover this need or prefer
a new one. Comment also on proposed charter and areas. Perhaps
this group should focus on one area such as genomics of arthropods.

I am currently working on a BBC Natural History Unit series called
Frozen Planet, the sequel to Planet Earth. The series is focussing on
We are hoping to film pelagic invertebrates in the White Sea next year,

Hi there,
Are there available codes/models to compute the drift of an object
knowing the surface currents, the swell characteristics, the surface
winds fields, etc... ?
For a small aspect ratio object, say a box with dimensions 2m x 0.4m
x 0.2m, with a density of 0.85, small surface currents (~0.1m/s) and
wave trains oriented toward the north, a surface wind between 5 and 10
kts oriented toward the west, what would be the relative importance of
the varied forces (currents and winds) acting on this floating box ?
Thank you for your lights !

At the invitation of the Seychelles government, the GVI expedition team
assists local biological studies and conservation programs throughout
the island. The focus is on coral and fish diversity and abundance,
along with coral recruitment studies. This has been extremely important
following the massive coral bleaching that occurred here in 1998 to
evaluate the reefs recovery. Data is collected on the local sea
cucumber, lobster and octopus fisheries. Assessment of turtle
populations and nesting behaviour are studied and involves a tagging
programme. Plankton and incidental whale shark activities are also
monitored. There is ongoing work carried out with local schools and
community groups to promote conservation. GVI's local partners include:

*	Seychelles Centre for Marine Research and Technology and Marine
Parks Authority (SCMRT-MPA)
*	Ministry of Environment
*	Marine Conservation Society of the Seychelles (MCSS)
*	Island Conservation Society

The data collected with the help of GVI volunteers not only aids
conservation in the Seychelles, but is incorporated into the Coral Reef
Degradation of the Indian Ocean (CORDIO) reports and Clive Wilkinson's
Status of Reefs of the World reports.

Training of expedition members is very rigorous in order to achieve
scientifically reliable data. Scientific professionals ensure 100% pass
rate in training before actual research is undertaken. First Aid & CPR
training is provided along with all health and safety protocols relevant
to the expedition and university/college credits may also be available.

Global Vision International

Critical conservation and humanitarian projects in over 30 countries
rely on GVI for volunteers, promotion and direct funding. GVI works
locally with its partners to promote sustainable development through
environment research, conservation and education. GVI volunteers benefit
from exceptional support, training and an internship scheme. For more
information about GVI visit www.gvi.co.uk

Ten-week expedition members are eligible for GVI scholarships to extend
their field experience by a further research phase. Some previous
expedition members have also gone on to work with our partners such as
the Marine Conservation Society of the Seychelles (MCSS). An internship
involving whale shark biology, populations, migrations and their
relationship with plankton is also available with MCSS from August until
October.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Global Vision International is seeking expedition members with diving
skills and knowledge of marine life to participate in scuba diving
surveys and marine conservation projects in Mexico.

Expedition members are needed for periods of 5, 10 and 15 weeks to join
the GVI marine research teams. Please promote these opportunities to
your clients - it's an excellent way of diving more and doing something
worthwhile at the same time. Additional training is available if
required, up to PADI Divemaster. Activities include coral reef and fish
monitoring surveys, turtle research, and environmental education and
awareness programs. There is a free careers abroad field work placement
and job vacancy service for former expedition members.

Mexico
GVI has been working in Mexico since 2003, and currently runs 2 marine
expeditions in Mexico, both involved in the conservation of the
Mesoamerican barrier reef and collected data is now being used by GVI
and its partners to promote the management of the reserve's resources in
a more sustainable manner.
Expedition Members are thoroughly trained in fish, coral and algae
identification techniques, as well as in the application of the
Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System Synoptic Monitoring Program
methodology. The data collected by the Expedition Members supports this
regional initiative, which aims to increase the biological knowledge of
the World's 2nd largest Barrier Reef System and to manage this system
both from a local and regional perspective. Since the beginning, and
with the assistance of our partners, GVI have amassed one of the largest
databases in existence on the condition, health and changes of any
section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

GVI Mexico also collaborates with, and provides Expedition Members for
other local projects, such as turtle species in-water observations and
beach patrols during nesting season, crocodile monitoring, and bird
observation and tagging. A long-term environmental education and
awareness program is also carried out in the nearby towns and villages.
Expedition Members will obtain the necessary skills to partake in these
projects.

All Expedition Members are trained to a minimum to PADI Advance Open
Water level, with further training available up to PADI Divemaster.
Special emphasis is placed in underwater navigation and peak performance
buoyancy skills when training the Expedition Members, as these are key
skills in order to carry out underwater biological surveys.

Expedition Members also have the opportunity to complete the PADI Coral
Reef Researcher Speciality, course that covers in-water species
identification and application of survey methodologies. In addition,
Expedition Members are introduced to the use of marine radios and
communications, Oxygen use and delivery, 1st aid and CPR, and dive
equipment maintenance.

The expeditions support the efforts of GVI's award winning local
partners to increase the long-term sustainable use of the coastal and
marine resources of the Mexican Caribbean. GVI Mexico partners include:

*	Amigos de Sian Ka'an in (ASK)
*	CONANP (National Commission for the Conservation of Natural
Protected Areas)
*	University of Quintana Roo, Mexico (UQROO)

Global Vision International
Critical conservation and humanitarian projects in over 35 countries
rely on GVI for volunteers, promotion and direct funding. GVI works

I was the dive master/biologist on two expeditions out to the seamount
in the late 1970's. Dr. D. Jones of Simon Fraser University was the
lead scientist and the Canadian Navy tranported out there.

We placed a sediment trap on the mount on the first trip and retrieved
it on a second. I have a number of still slides and some 1` video
taken on the second trip. I am not at all sure of the quality of the
tape at this date but perhaps the Canadian Broadcating Corp may have
an archive that has survived.

We made a number of dives onto the mount with minimal in-water
decompression, saw no sharks but MILLIONS of snapper.

I was given this email address by Ted as you can see bellow, my origional email is below. As you can see im interested in getting involved in the deep sea world in a more interesting way. I joined the oil and gas industry as a stepping stone into exploration.

If theres any information that anyone can give me about where i can look or who to speak to, it would be most welcome.

If theres one thing in life that ive wanted to do, its to research life
on earth.

Im a skilled technician, and ROV pilot. Ive only been in the industry
three years, but im bored with construction and what ever else my work can

Hi,

I want to find something like a "complete list" of species of
hydrothermal vent communities around the world. I know that making
this kind of list is a hard task, and it is almost impossible.

During last few weeks I was reading a lot of papers made by
scientists, who research those ecosysthems of the deep sea, and there
were huge differences between the amount of species that they declare
to occure there.

If you can recommend me the latest numbers or titles of papers about
current knowledge in this fiel I would be thankful.

With a lot of greetings,
Magdalena Wutkowska

New species of manta announced

Dr. Andrea Marshall has been studying manta rays for five years.
Mantas fascinate people because of their strangeness and their sheer
size (specimens over 7m across and weighing over two metric tons are
on record).
Mantas have traditionally been assigned to one species, Manta
birostris, although there are questions about whether the distinctly
marked variant called "Beebe's manta" should qualify as a species in
its own right, and at least two other species (Manta ehrenbergii and
Manta raya) have been proposed at various times. Now Dr. Marshall is
convinced she has ended this confusion by determining there are at
least two species, and there may be three.

As a release from her supporting organization, "Save Our Seas," puts
it:

"The two species have mainly overlapping distributions, but their
lifestyles differ greatly; one is migratory and the other is resident
to particular areas along the coast. Other differences between the two
species lie in their colour, skin texture, reproductive biology, and
the presence of a non-functioning type of sting on the tail of one of
the species."

The commonly known species is the one tending toward (though not
exclusively residing in) coastal zones. The migratory animal is
larger, and very little is understood about it.

COMMENT: Here we have, in the 21st century, the discovery of one of
the largest fishes on the planet. It can be argued that, when Dr.
Mitchell publishes her formal paper naming the new species, it will be
a reclassification rather than an entirely new discovery, but this
does not diminish the impact of her findings.
It's interesting to note that this episode, with its determination of
new species based in part on range and migration, is reminiscent of
the debate over whether "resident" and "transient" orcas are members
of the same species. In that case, too, there is speculation about a
third, poorly understood, population which may qualify as a species.
That a huge fish and a huge marine mammal raise similar questions is a
thought-provoking hint about how much we still have to learn about the
denizens of the sea.

Underwater Camera used in the Coral Triangle

Greetings,

We have just returned from a remote corner of Indonesia in the Coral
Triangle. We were able to deploy our OceanCam on several occasions
off the dive liveaboard Seven Seas. This was the first time that we
evaluated the use of the OceanCam as part of a regular dive trip. It
is common for the ship to move to a new location on a daily basis.
The camera needed to be deployed and retrieved without affecting this
schedule.

Our new Underwater IP Camera System which can be controlled over the
Internet from anywhere in the world is now equipped with a wireless
transmitter and 6-12 hour battery pack. This allowed the OceanCam to
be deployed easily and quickly without long wires tethered to the
ship. The system was placed on a rock in the coral reef and live
video was recorded within minutes of deployment. When sea conditions
worsened and the ship had to move to find a safe mooring, the camera
was easily and quickly retrieved.

This was the first time that we were able to deploy a camera system
on a tropical coral reef. Dr. Lida Pet, WWF, was intrigued by the
footage collected. She was especially interested in the fish behavior
that was very different from when divers are in the water. You can
see samples of the video from Raja Ampat in Indonesia by visiting our
web site at www.OceanPresence.com and selecting our [ Sample Video
Library ].

The underwater IP camera system has proved itself in open ocean
evaluations and adds a new level of entertainment to dive liveaboard
adventures. For more information on this new exciting technology,
visit OPT's web site and view our new video brochure.
[ Click for brochure ]

Please let me know if I can be of any assistance in planning your
application of this exciting new technology.

Sincerely yours,

Greetings,

You may be well aware of this voyage, but I thought it would be of interest
to you and your group/site members.

New England Aquarium scientist and explorer Dr. Greg Stone is on an
expedition to the Celebes Sea in partnership with NOAA, Wood's Hole
Oceanographic Institute and National Geographic. The Celebes Sea is located
between Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, and is one of the only deep
ocean areas unaffected by deep-running Arctic or Antarctic currents. Greg
and his colleagues are the first to explore these depths, and are eager to
see what mysterious creatures could be awaiting their discovery.

Greg regularly updates his blog about the trip on our website. Follow this

Dear All,

I am currently working on a project to elucidate the evolutionary
history and phylogeny of the family Lithodidae, with a special but not
exclusive focus on the history of the colonisation of the Southern
Ocean.

To allow this study to be as thorough as possible, I require samples of
lithodid tissue, along with details of the morphology and origin of
individuals sampled. Tissues will be used for genetic work, with the
intention of combining the molecular, morphological and ecological data
in the course of the study.

We have had success so far with samples that have been frozen or put
into ethanol very shortly after death, but I would like to try to get
genetic information out of some less well preserved animals in addition
to this. Any contribution would be well received. In addition, a set
of digital photographs (including clear dorsal and ventral shots, and
preferably a close-up of the rostral region), and/or a museum catalogue
number, will make the tissue sample more useful to the study.

I am also interested in examining specimens of the family Lithodidae
even if it is not possible to sample the tissues, and I will travel to
see any collection within Europe.

Please contact me at your earliest convenience with details of your
collection if you think you may be able to help.

In Linnaeus’ Wake: 300 years of marine discovery

A meeting, to be hosted at the Linnean Society of London with an
evening reception on the Swedish Ship Götheborg on the River Thames

June 1, 2007

The fundamental contribution of Linnaeus to the scientific world - a
system of nomenclature and classification - was underpinned by his
collections and those of his ‘Apostles’, made possible in the mid
18th Century by the maritime power of European nations. Ships, and
shipping companies such as the Swedish East India Company (SOIC),
were used by Linnaeus to expand his collections from all over the
globe. To celebrate both the tercentenary of Linnaeus’ birth, and the
arrival of the Swedish Ship Götheborg in London (an exact replica of
the 18th Century East Indiaman Götheborg used by the SOIC), a
scientific meeting will be hosted this summer at the Linnean Society
of London with an evening reception aboard the vessel moored on the
River Thames.

The meeting will cover the historical importance of the SOIC and
Linnaeus, life aboard an 18th century vessel, and scientifically will
focus on marine systematic and taxonomic discoveries from the last
three hundred years. It will show how in the age of DNA sequencing
and deep-sea robotic submarines, much of marine science is still in
the ‘discovery phase’, just as it was in Linnaeus’ day. Our meeting,
jointly sponsored by Göteborg University, Zoologica Scripta, the
Hasselblad Foundation, the Linnean Society and The Natural History
Museum will celebrate the life of Linnaeus and his legacy, and show
what an 18th century square-rigged East Indiaman was like for the
scientist and sailor.

Speakers will include: Dr Tony Rice, Prof Phil Rainbow, Dr Katrin
Linse, Dr Ben Wigham, Dr Kenneth Nyberg, Dr Hans Nyman, Dr John
Taylor, Dr Alex Rogers, Joakim Severinson

**** No valid commands found.
**** Commands must be in message BODY, not in HEADER.

**** Help for majordomo@...:

This help message is being sent to you from the Majordomo mailing list
management system at majordomo@....

This is version 1.94.5 of Majordomo.

If you're familiar with mail servers, an advanced user's summary of
Majordomo's commands appears at the end of this message.

Majordomo is an automated system which allows users to subscribe
and unsubscribe to mailing lists, and to retrieve files from list
archives.

You can interact with the Majordomo software by sending it commands
in the body of mail messages addressed to "majordomo@...".
Please do not put your commands on the subject line; Majordomo does
not process commands in the subject line.

You may put multiple Majordomo commands in the same mail message.
Put each command on a line by itself.

If you use a "signature block" at the end of your mail, Majordomo may
mistakenly believe each line of your message is a command; you will
then receive spurious error messages. To keep this from happening,
either put a line starting with a hyphen ("-") before your signature,
or put a line with just the word

        end

on it in the same place. This will stop the Majordomo software from
processing your signature as bad commands.

Here are some of the things you can do using Majordomo:

I.	FINDING OUT WHICH LISTS ARE ON THIS SYSTEM

To get a list of publicly-available mailing lists on this system, put the
following line in the body of your mail message to majordomo@...:

        lists

Each line will contain the name of a mailing list and a brief description
of the list.

To get more information about a particular list, use the "info" command,
supplying the name of the list. For example, if the name of the list
about which you wish information is "demo-list", you would put the line

        info demo-list

in the body of the mail message.

II.	SUBSCRIBING TO A LIST

Once you've determined that you wish to subscribe to one or more lists on
this system, you can send commands to Majordomo to have it add you to the
list, so you can begin receiving mailings.

To receive list mail at the address from which you're sending your mail,
simply say "subscribe" followed by the list's name:

        subscribe demo-list

If for some reason you wish to have the mailings go to a different address
(a friend's address, a specific other system on which you have an account,
or an address which is more correct than the one that automatically appears
in the "From:" header on the mail you send), you would add that address to
the command. For instance, if you're sending a request from your work
account, but wish to receive "demo-list" mail at your personal account
(for which we will use "jqpublic@..." as an example), you'd put
the line

        subscribe demo-list jqpublic@...

in the mail message body.

Based on configuration decisions made by the list owners, you may be added
to the mailing list automatically. You may also receive notification
that an authorization key is required for subscription. Another message
will be sent to the address to be subscribed (which may or may not be the
same as yours) containing the key, and directing the user to send a
command found in that message back to majordomo@.... (This can be
a bit of extra hassle, but it helps keep you from being swamped in extra
email by someone who forged requests from your address.) You may also
get a message that your subscription is being forwarded to the list owner
for approval; some lists have waiting lists, or policies about who may
subscribe. If your request is forwarded for approval, the list owner
should contact you soon after your request.

Upon subscribing, you should receive an introductory message, containing
list policies and features. Save this message for future reference; it
will also contain exact directions for unsubscribing. If you lose the
intro mail and would like another copy of the policies, send this message
to majordomo@...:

        intro demo-list

(substituting, of course, the real name of your list for "demo-list").

III.	UNSUBSCRIBING FROM MAILING LISTS

Your original intro message contains the exact command which should be
used to remove your address from the list. However, in most cases, you
may simply send the command "unsubscribe" followed by the list name:

        unsubscribe demo-list

(This command may fail if your provider has changed the way your
address is shown in your mail.)

To remove an address other than the one from which you're sending
the request, give that address in the command:

        unsubscribe demo-list jqpublic@...

In either of these cases, you can tell majordomo@... to remove
the address in question from all lists on this server by using "*"
in place of the list name:

        unsubscribe *
        unsubscribe * jqpublic@...

IV.	FINDING THE LISTS TO WHICH AN ADDRESS IS SUBSCRIBED

To find the lists to which your address is subscribed, send this command
in the body of a mail message to majordomo@...:

        which

You can look for other addresses, or parts of an address, by specifying
the text for which Majordomo should search. For instance, to find which
users at my-isp.com are subscribed to which lists, you might send the
command

        which my-isp.com

Note that many list owners completely or fully disable the "which"
command, considering it a privacy violation.

V.	FINDING OUT WHO'S SUBSCRIBED TO A LIST

To get a list of the addresses on a particular list, you may use the
"who" command, followed by the name of the list:

        who demo-list

Note that many list owners allow only a list's subscribers to use the
"who" command, or disable it completely, believing it to be a privacy
violation.

VI.	RETRIEVING FILES FROM A LIST'S ARCHIVES

Many list owners keep archives of files associated with a list. These
may include:
- back issues of the list
- help files, user profiles, and other documents associated with the list
- daily, monthly, or yearly archives for the list

To find out if a list has any files associated with it, use the "index"
command:

        index demo-list

If you see files in which you're interested, you may retrieve them by
using the "get" command and specifying the list name and archive filename.
For instance, to retrieve the files called "profile.form" (presumably a
form to fill out with your profile) and "demo-list.9611" (presumably the
messages posted to the list in November 1996), you would put the lines

        get demo-list profile.form
        get demo-list demo-list.9611

in your mail to majordomo@....

VII.	GETTING MORE HELP

To contact a human site manager, send mail to majordomo-Owner@....
To contact the owner of a specific list, send mail to that list's
diving, as well as for people that have already some
experience in one of the two or in both fields and wish to
improve their skills.

Course program, details, photo gallery of 2006 edition at:
http://www.mappamondogis.it/divegis.htm

Overview

This course will take place in the rich of history and
nature Marine Protected Area of Capo Rizzuto, Italy.
Participants will have the chance of becoming successful
Geographic Information Systems users and certified divers
through the ESRI Authorized "Introduction to ArcGIS 9.x" and
the PADI "Open (or Advanced) Water Diver" courses.
Additionally overlap modules will introduce the participants
to GIS-based tools and techniques of marine scientists with
underwater and computer sessions. They will learn how to map
marine habitats from satellite/aerial images and verify them
on the field, perform marine fauna and flora surveys and
find associations among all the biotic and abiotic
components using GIS.

"Introduction to ArcGIS 9.x ESRI authorized course"

This course covers fundamental GIS concepts as well as how
to query a GIS database, manipulate tabular data, edit
spatial and attribute data, and present data clearly and
efficiently using maps and charts. Participants learn how to
use ArcMapT, ArcCatalogT, and ArcToolboxT and explore how
these applications work together to provide a complete GIS
software solution. Students will receive an internationally
recognised ESRI certificate at the end of this module.

"GIS and Remote Sensing of the Marine Environment"

This course covers fundamental Remote Sensing concepts and
how to use this technology for marine resources mapping. It
gives and overview of image analysis and classification
methods and an in depth practical case study of marine
habitat mapping by mean of remote sensing images visual
interpretation.

"Marine Fauna identification and data collection on the
field"

Students will learn how to identify marine fauna and flora,
how to collect scientific data regarding their distribution
and how to use GIS handheld tools and GPS units. Students
will also collect habitat data for remote sensing image
interpretation ground thruthing and accuracy assessment.
Data will be collected while on the field, diving and
snorkeling.

Fishery Analyst for ArcGIS 9.x V2.0

Fishery Analyst is an ArcGIS 9.x extension developed to
effectively analyze and visualize temporal and spatial
patterns of fishery dynamics. The main functions are
quantitative estimation and visualization of catch and
effort and their variation in space and time, analysis of
fishing vessel utilization, data quality control, and
deriving information on the location of important economic
and threatened species. The application provides a
user-friendly analysis interface allowing for easy and
diverse output production. The interface allows the user to
choose the analysis to perform (effort, catch density, catch
per unit of effort etc) and to select data on criteria such
as year, vessel name or size class, and fish species caught.
The output can be generated as yearly, monthly, quarterly or
user-defined date interval plots. Results can be plotted in
pre-defined map layouts and saved in quantitative GIS data
file formats (raster and vector) or as static maps. The
application provides an option to produce non-confidential
plots for data protected by confidentiality policies.

Hi,
My name is Simon Donald - I'm a film and television screenwriter. My
most recent work was Channel Four's "Low Winter Sun" - nominated for a
best drama Bafta this Sunday.

I'm in the very early stages of developing a new drama series for the
BBC a part of which would be set in an underwater research submarine.

I was wondering if you might be able to point me in the direction of a
facility which I might be able to visit in order to experience something
of the world of underwater research. To be specific - I'm looking for
any vehicle or station which might accomodate six to eight researchers
underwater - anywhere in the world. I'd be delighted if you could point
me in the right direction.

Many thanks.

Simon Donald.
