Plant Breeding for Drought Tolerance short course

Colorado State University, Oklahoma State University, and University of Nebraska researchers, paired with input from a committee of expert breeders, growers, physiologists, and agronomists from some of the top companies in agriculture are offering a short course in plant breeding for drought tolerance June 14-June 25, 2010 in Fort Collins, CO. The course will consist of a combination of classroom lectures, hands-on lab exercises, and field research in a drought breeding program at experimental field sites in Eastern Colorado and Western Nebraska. Prior to the short course, students will complete an online series of instructional modules to provide a common background in breeding and physiology concepts. Students will first review and discuss these concepts and later become skilled at them in hands-on lab and field exercises. The course is designed for professionals in the public and private sectors as well as for graduate students in plant breeding and genetics programs. Dear Section Members,

We hope you were able to attend some of the talks or posters of
students who entered the Billings and New Phytologist (NP) Poster
award at this year’s ESA meeting. We had a great (and relatively
large) bunch of students competing this year, although we had almost
five times more students giving talks compared to posters. Because of
this imbalance, we awarded two honorable mentions for the Billings
award, which is in addition to the overall winners of the Billings and
New Phytologist Poster awards. The awardees are (drum roll...):

Billings award:

Winner: Doug Aubrey, University of Georgia, gave an oral presentation
on “Root-derived CO2 efflux via xylem stream rivals soil CO2 efflux”
with co-author R.O. Teskey.

Honorable mention: Greg Barron-Gafford, University of Arizona, gave a
presentation on “Integrating estimates of ecosystem respiration from
eddy covariance towers with automated measures of soil respiration:
Examining the development and influence of hysteresis in soil
respiratory fluxes along a woody plant encroachment gradient” with
co-authors R. Scott, G.D. Jennerette, and T.E. Huxman.

Honorable mention: Dena Vallano, Cornell University, gave a
presentation on “Effects of direct foliar uptake of gaseous nitrogen
dioxide on plant-herbivore interactions” with co-author S. Campbell.

New Phytologist Poster award:

Winner: Allyson Eller, Cornell University, presented a poster on
“Influence of changing air chemistry on plant growth and reproduction:
Effects of rising carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone on a
model species” with co-author J. Sparks.

The winners of the Billings and New Phytologist Poster awards will
receive a cash prize, and the winners and honorable mentions will also
receive a complimentary book of their choice from Elsevier. Thanks to
both New Phytologist, which contributes to the Billings fund (source
of cash prize) and Elsevier for supporting our Section’s awards

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION: ECOSYSTEM C AND N DYNAMICS AND SYNTHESIS

A two-year post-doctoral position is available to work on a multi-investigator, DOE-funded project that examines the effects of elevated carbon dioxide on ecosystem C and N dynamics in the Mojave Desert. The post-doctoral research associate will be responsible for synthesizing and modeling existing data from the 10-year Nevada Desert FACE project in a collaborative project between Washington State University, the University of Wyoming, University of Nevada Las Vegas, and the University of Nevada Reno. A primary goal of the synthesis work is to explore the combined effects of elevated carbon dioxide and precipitation variability on the functioning of arid ecosystems. Data are to be synthesized within a hierarchical Bayesian framework that facilitates simultaneous coupling of diverse data sources and mechanistic models. university presses do not promote the books (it was published by Universidad Nacional

Postdoc in plant hydraulic conductivity and water relations: We are
looking for a highly motivated individual to work on an NSF funded project
dealing with plant hydraulic responses to CO2 enrichment. Persons with a
PhD in appropriate fields including plant water relations, ecophysiology,
ecohydrology, are encouraged to apply. Experience/familiarity with root
and shoot measurements of hydraulic conductivity, gas exchange, sapflow,
water relations and tissue nitrogen chemistry is highly desirable.
Demonstrated ability to publish peer-reviewed papers and effective written
and oral communication skills is also a plus. The work will include travel
to FACE facilities at Duke University and SOYFACE in southern Illinois as

The accelerating combustion of fossil fuels is driving the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; as this greenhouse gas accumulates it forces a rapid and potentially dangerous warming of the planet. Biofuels have the potential to offset the accumulation of carbon dioxide and thus slow the rate of global warming. The largest contiguous biome in continental North America is the agricultural region where corn and soybean are grown in rotation. Allocating a portion of this region to the production of second generation biofuels, such as perennial grasses, has the potential to reduce the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and may mitigate some of the negative impacts of modern agriculture, including the loss of soil carbon and nitrogen contamination of ground water. This session will examine recent understanding of the effects of biofuel feedstocks on the biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen and water, and will incorporate societal and economic implications through a discussion of life-cycle analysis applied to biofuel feedstocks.

Dears Mark and Ellen,

You can get the C4 pathway list of plants from Photosynthetica 1992,
26:323-331 and Photosynthetica 1978, 12:200-208 (attached file).

To distinguish between C3 and C4 plants you have to provide either
measurement of compensation point or do measurements of photosynthesis at
1% and 21% of O2 in sample air using any closed system for photosynthesis
measurements (IRGA) like CIRAS-2 or TPS-2 from PP Systems Company
(http://www.ppsystems.com).

Stress sensitivity of plants and ecosystems under climate change conditions

1 Postdoctoral position, 1 PhD position.

The central research question of this project is whether the resistance of species-rich plant communities to different stress factors will change in a future climate. To this end we will grow grassland mesocosms in sunlit controlled chambers under the present or future climate conditions, and expose them to a wide range of stressors: drought, water logging, nitrogen deficiency, and heavy metals (zinc). Stressors will be applied separately to assess dose-response relations, but also in combination to examine their interactive impact. Responses to stress will be evaluated at the cell, plant and ecosystem levels. Candidates for the PhD or Postdoctoral position should have a strong interest in studying plant responses at the biochemical level (antioxidants, stress-related enzymes, protein oxidation, ...).

Candidates must have a Masters degree or PhD degree in plant physiology, ecology or plant biochemistry, preferentially with expertise in the analysis of plant stress responses. Positions are for 1 year, renewable up to 4 years, depending on performance evaluations. Stipends are according to university regulations and allow for comfortable living in Antwerp.

Next generation ecological observing systems make use of advanced
sensors and actuators, wireless communication, low-power processors,
and sophisticated architectures and algorithms to provide novel views
of ecosystems and ecosystem processes. This four-day course surveys
some of these technologies and their application to investigations of
soil-plant interactions. Participants will evaluate the theory and
use of observing technologies to measure energy, carbon, nutrient,
and water fluxes at the soil atmosphere interface, including hands-on
investigations and analyses of spatial and temporal variation.

==Structure==
The course begins on Monday evening with dinner, a welcome
introduction by reserve director Michael Hamilton, and an overview
lecture by CENS Director, Deborah Estrin. Generally, the mornings
consist of lecture and laboratory activities, the afternoons of field
measurements, and the evenings analysis of results. Tuesday’s focus
is on plant physiological process and within canopy flux
measurements. Wednesday consists of exploring the soil and soil
processes, including exchange between soils, plants, and the
atmosphere. The final day, Thursday, brings it all together with
consideration of total ecosystem budgets.

Wired and wireless sensing system designs and deployments. Below
ground sensors (CO2, temperature, moisture). Above ground sensors
(air temperature, relative humidity, and photosynthetic active
radiation). Soil observation chambers (minirhizotrons). Robotic
canopy platforms.

==Audience==
This course is appropriate for a broad audience, including graduate
students, post-doctoral researchers, faculty, field technicians, and
field station personnel. Priority will be given to those with an
understanding of the biogeochemical aspects of the curriculum so that
the focus is placed on the technology and how it can be utilized to
investigate these phenomena in novel ways.

The Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) is seeking an innovative, self-motivate, scientifically oustanding candidate for a post-doctoral position to investigate mechanisms involved in nitrogen deficiency tolerance of bread wheat using a simplified model of C/N relations and root architecture. This work will provide knowledge and new QTL to aid in the development of wheat varieties adapted to low input production systems, which are favoured in Europe due to low market prices and increasing environmental concerns. The position will be based at UMR EGC INRA/INA-PG, laboratory specialised in C and N interactions at plant and crop level, at Grignon, located 40 km West of Paris. The appointee will spend short periods in INRA Genetics and Breeding units in Rennes and Clermont-Ferrand.

Description: A population of di-haploid (DH) lines was produced from the cross between 'Arche' and 'Récital', two varieties contrasted for their tolerance in N deficiency. QTL for N stress reaction were detected in the field. A sample of the DH lines was also grown at low N level under controlled conditions. To find pertinent parameters to explain N response, a simplified conceptual plant model was used to analyse N absorption in relation to C assimilation. It appeared that the most variable model parameter was N uptake rate computed as the ratio between total plant N and cumulated root length. A QTL detection was carried out on state variables and on model parameters to identify interesting chromosomic regions. We were however not able to take into account the relation between root biomass and architecture that is known to be a major mechanism of adaptation to mineral deficiency.
We propose to further investigate wheat N deficiency tolerance under controlled conditions. The appointee will adapt an Arabidopsis model on wheat to take into account the response of root architecture to the C and N environment of the plant. He/she will then test a population of DH lines in controlled conditions to perform a QTL detection on parameters of the model. He/she will validate the QTL and the model by predicting and testing the behaviour of allelic compositions.

Qualifications and experience:
Required: Ph. D. in plant or crop physiology Training in modelling, and in biometric analyses. Demonstrated ability to publish papers in refereed international journals.
Preferred: Experience with QTL analysis will be appreciated.

Terms: appointment for 12 months.
Starting date: between 1st Jan and 1st April 2007.

Analysing global change in tropical forests through tree rings and stable isotopes

A three-year PhD position funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) will become available at the Institute of Botany, University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (Universität für Bodenkultur www.boku.ac.at) Vienna, Austria, starting April 2007, or as agreed.
Increasing atmospheric CO2 affects tree physiology and water relations, and is thought to have affected the growth dynamics of many tropical forests. Anthropogenic nitrogen input has increased even in remote tropical regions with largely unknown effects on tropical forests, and the effect of past fluctuations and possible future changes in temperature and precipitation on tropical trees is little understood. The project supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) will sample increment cores from trees with annual growth rings, mainly from established forest plots in Thailand, India, Australia and Panama, and trace the effect of global change on tropical forests through tree rings and stable isotopes.
The candidate will measure and analyse increment cores, and prepare samples for stable isotope analysis. She or he is also expected to join in field sampling to some of the sites and to co-operate with the international and Austrian partners of the project (the Institute of Botany and the Tree Ring Laboratory of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Science and the Stable Isotope Laboratory of the Department of Chemical Ecology and Ecosystem Research at the University of Vienna). Data analysis will focus on detecting long-term trends, correlations with climate variability, and evaluating the growth dynamics of populations.
The ideal candidate would have experience in tree ring research and/or the ecology of tropical trees and forests, a sound knowledge of statistics, and English writing skills. Courses in tree ring research and stable isotope techniques will also be offered during the studies.
Apart from field trips, work will be based in Vienna, which in 2006 was ranked 4th out of 250 cities in an internation ranking of overall quality of life.

Now, I try to recognize the ultrasonic calls, but it doesnt work good.
I only use the frequency input of the microcontroller to calculate the frequency.

We would like to advertise a post-doc research position based at University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the UWM Field Station at Cedarburg Bog. The position
will involve working with a team of plant ecologists to characterise long term
change in plant communities in this Experimental Ecological Reserve. The full

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE (Postdoctoral Researcher)

Full time (12 month) research position to supervise surveys of plant species and
analyze long-term ecological change in a protected wetland, Cedarburg Bog, at
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Field Station
(http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/fieldstation/home.html) and within the Dept of
Biological Sciences (http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/Biology/). A PhD with a focus on
plant ecology and climate change is preferred, but we will consider exceptional
MS - level candidates. The successful candidate will work both independently and
with a team of PIs to characterize long term changes in plant species
distribution and abundance, breeding bird abundance and phenology in a
vulnerable wetland and vegetation type which occurs at the southern extreme of
its distribution. The position will involve data mining to generate a long term
database of ecological change in the wetland and analyze this database for long
term trends. The candidate will also assist with writing research proposals to
support ongoing long term monitoring of the wetland. Proficiency with
ecological statistics and data analysis and good communication skills are
required.

We offer a competitive salary and full benefits. Initial appointment will be for
one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year. Start date is
between August 1 and December 1, 2006. Review of applications will begin July

The Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) organizes a highly successful master's programme on the interface between ecology and evolution. This two-year "top master" programme is designed to provide an optimal preparation for a subsequent PhD programme and eventually for a scientific career in academic research. Through intensive student-teacher interaction during courses, seminars, practicals and individual research projects, students get an intense training in modern research paradigms and techniques. Much emphasis will be placed on the development of critical thinking and the training in "soft skills" like efficient communication or writing grant proposals. Graduate assistantship in tree ecophysiology available at the University of
Maine. I am seeking a MS or Ph.D. student to join our research program
studying the influence of past and future climate change and management
options on the tree species composition of the Acadian forest. The Acadian
forest occupies a tension zone between the boreal forest and the eastern
deciduous forest providing an excellent setting for investigating the
ecophysiology of range-limits, competition, species migrations and related
topics. Our current approach is studying the tradeoffs between opportunity
and stress offered by rapid shifts in environmental factors. This position

Hi,

I'm Flora Tinya from the ELTE University, Budapest, in Hungary. We
work in forests and try to modell the light environment in various forest
types. We need for this work the LAD (leaf area density) parameter of
some species (Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea, Quercus robur,
Carpinus betulus, Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies, Corylus avellana, Betula
pendula, Larix decidua).
Could you help us, where can we find such data for these species?

Teaching Assistant PhD scholarship in Environmental Microbiology/Environmental Engineering available

We are seeking an international student to undertake a PhD at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore on physiological diversity of microbial communities used in environmental engineering. Aim of this research is to develop the methods to monitor different physiological states of cells in microbial communities using flow cytometry and fluorescent microscopy. The successful candidate will be awarded with Teaching Assistant postgraduate scholarship, which can be started from July 2006 if application will be submitted before March 2006.

The candidate for Teaching Assistant has to satisfy the higher degree admission criteria as he/she will have to register as a PhD candidate. Below are the guidelines for a full-time Teaching Assistant: 1) candidate will be assigned 20 hours of work per week; 2) candidate will be paid $2,000 (appr.USD1,200) /month plus graduate fees.
