Does anyone use schott reflective slides during their research? I've
tried them once, and the background noise wasn't quite good, does

Short course: Plant Breeding for Drought Tolerance

PLANT BREEDING FOR DROUGHT TOLERANCE

Moisture deficits loom as one of the greatest challenges to future crop production, both in rainfed and irrigated agriculture. Enhancing the genetic tolerance of crops to drought stress, together with improved agronomic practices, is considered an essential strategy for addressing these deficits. To respond to the need for more plant scientists trained in developing drought tolerant cultivars, Colorado State University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Oklahoma State University will offer a short course in Plant Breeding for Drought Tolerance June 14-25, 2010. The course will be held at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and at experimental field sites in Eastern Colorado and Western Nebraska.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The course is targeted to graduate students in the plant sciences, as well as to professionals in the public and private sectors. It will provide three transferable graduate-level credits.

CONTENT
The course will consist of classroom lectures, hands-on lab exercises, and field research activities appropriate for a drought breeding and genetics program. Course activities are designed around three modules:
* Whole Plant Physiology of Drought Stress
* Plant Breeding for Drought Stress Tolerance
* Genomic Approaches to Drought Stress Tolerance

The course format will include several days at field sites in Colorado and Nebraska with intermittent classroom lectures and discussion. We will emphasize hands-on exercises to provide practical experience in a drought tolerance breeding program. Eight instructors from four universities, each with a different specialty in plant sciences will lecture both in the classroom and at the field sites. Visits to private sector breeding programs will also be included. The course will be given in English.

PREREQUISITES
Participants should have a solid understanding of basic plant physiology and genetics. Prior to the short course, students will review online material on these topics to provide a common background in breeding and physiology concepts.

PROGRAM COSTS
The cost of student tuition and fees is $1,687. Accommodations for room and board are available on-campus for either $600 (double occupancy) or $775 (single occupancy). This cost includes three meals daily. Guests are also welcome to make their own arrangements for room and board. All foreign visas and travel arrangements are at students' initiative and expense.

FUNDING
Partial funding for the course is provided by a grant from the USDA-CSREES-NRI Plant Breeding and Education program.

REGISTRATION AND INFORMATION
Participants may apply online (http://www.droughtadaptation.org) beginning December 1, 2009. Interested students are encouraged to visit the course website for more details, or send an email to the Program Assistant, Annie Heiliger, at Annie707@...<mailto:Annie707@...> with questions.
Subject: FW: SporeSim to simulate pollen dispersal
Date: Tue, 29 Sep 2009 17:14:38 +0200

Greetings!

SporeSim is physical-mathematical validated layer model to simulate dispersal of pollen and spores within a crop.
It may calulete the escape-fraction as the percentage of partic;es leaving the crop.
We used it to calculate the escape fraction of a biocontrol fungus for a risk analysis.
Then we incorporated a low sedimentation velocity Vs. If we change the parameter of Vs in Vs = 0.02 m/sec
SporeSim can quantify dispersal orf pollen grains and spores with à high sedimentation velocity such as conidiopspores of Potato Late Bliight.

It might be worthwhile to describe a version of SporeSim adapted to simulate pollen dispersal. However, I donot have a job thus such a small research should be funded externally by e.g. Kellog's Cornflakes to publish a paper on dispersal of pollen in corn. You may find a comprehensive description of Sporesim in
http://www.geocities.com/biosanitation/
A postdoctoral position for a Plant Biochemist is available in the van
Wijk lab to contribute to a collaborative project sponsored by the
NSF-Genome program. This project concerns a cell-type specific
comparative analysis of C3 and C4 leaf development in Rice, Sorghum
and Maize. In leaves of such C4 grasses photosynthetic activities are
partitioned between two morphologically and biochemically distinct
bundle sheath (BS) and mesophyll (M) cells. The overall objectives are
to compare the quantitative and qualitative patterns of transcripts,
proteins, metabolic activities and anatomy at discrete stages and in
specific cell types in rice (C3), maize and sorghum (C4), and to
develop a model of the regulatory networks governing C4 anatomy and
function. These experimental datasets will be linked by new
informatics tools for comparative transcriptional and proteome
analysis, to provide the foundation for a systems biology approach to
   understanding C4 biology.

The responsibilities of the postdoc include isolation of specific
subsets of leaf proteomes (e.g. Bundle strands) for proteome analysis,
as well as biological interpretation of large scale proteome (and
other) datasets. In particular, a strong effort is needed on
extracting biological conclusions and hypotheses from these large
scale datasets. Experience in plant protein biochemistry and a strong
interest in plant metabolism and systems biology is required. The
postdoc will work closely together with other team members, including
mass spectrometry specialists and bioinformaticians. Salary will be
commensurate with experience with generous employee benefits according
   the Cornell Human Resource Office.

Review of applications will begin immediately, and continue until the
   position is filled.

Greetings, Maize-o-philes!

We have three items at MaizeGDB that you should check out.

1. The Mo17 SNP are in the Genome Browser! Visit
http://gbrowse.maizegdb.org/ to view those aligned SNP and other variations
contributed by the DOE's JGI.

2. Curious about how B73 is being sequenced? Want to know more about what
you're seeing when you work with sequence at MaizeGDB? Check out the
"Featured MaizeGDB Tutorials" at http://www.maizegdb.org/tutorial. The
movie "B73 Genome Caveats" is available in both QuickTime and FLASH formats
via links to the right of the "View Area" toward the top of that page. This
movie will be updated over time as the Maize Genome Sequencing Project
progresses and as MaizeGDB's representation of the genome improves.

3. Trying to find all the maize projects on a particular topic? Browse
POPcorn! POPcorn (http://www.maizegdb.org/POPcorn/) currently has 42
projects and 76 resources. Let us know what we're missing - we want this to
be a comprehensive list of projects and soon will implement the ability to
BLAST cooperating projects' sequence-indexed data from one place.

Thanks for your continued help and suggestions! We owe a special thanks to
the Maize Genome Sequencing Project personnel for their help in making the
B73 movie accurate.

Sincerely,
The MaizeGDB Team

Maize BioNet Members,

I am writing to announce that POPcorn, the Project Portal for corn,
has been released! It can be accessed online at http://www.maizegdb.org/POPcorn
or by clicking the link to POPcorn in the left margin of MaizeGDB's
main page.

POPcorn is an NSF-funded project (DBI #074380) ancillary to MaizeGDB
that currently provides a searchable database of maize projects and
resources. During Phase 2 of development, we plan to enable
researchers to retrieve sequence data from multiple sources with one
query - BLASTing lots of sources from one place!

Work on POPcorn began in February of 2009. It will be released in
three phases over two years.

Phase 1 (current)	Provide a searchable database of maize projects and
resources.
Phase 2 Provide tools for sequence-based searching of participating
maize projects and resources.
Phase 3 Provide behind-the-scenes tools to enable projects to
transition their data to MaizeGDB when the projects are complete.

Upon completion, POPcorn will become a part of MaizeGDB.

Status
The initial set of searchable projects was released in April '09 and
we are continuing to add projects to the searchable database. We are
in the process of setting up a forum for coordinating annotation
efforts.

NOTE THAT WE ARE CURRENTLY HIRING A PROGRAMMER! Apply online at https://www.iastatejobs.com/applicants/jsp/shared/frameset/Frameset.jsp?time=1242422222540
Posted on May 6, 2009, 5:40 PM, by pankaj, under Community news,
Database release, Gramene, Gramene news.

The Gramene database project team is happy to announce beta release of
the PlantGeneWiki. It is designed as an online community portal on
plant genes and their annotations. Our goal for PlantGeneWiki is to
generate community curated/annotated pages where the researchers can
browse, search, read and manage the content by editing. Yes, the biggest
advantage of them all is that researchers now have the ability to update
and edit the information known about the genes identified in plants on
their own without any delays. If you don’t find a gene of your interest
in the PlantGeneWiki, you can add it as well. Any content you add/edit
on PlantGeneWiki is released for instant online access and cites your
contribution. Therefore a good starting place is to add/edit information
on known genes.

PlantGeneWiki is freely accessible to everyone and you can help us make
it better in following ways:

     * Share your knowledge by EDITING existing and/or ADDING new
information to the existing gene pages.
     * Adding NEW GENE PAGES.
     * Adding links.
     * Correct and report our errors.

We encourage first time users to get familiarized with the portal and
user/contributor functions by taking the Guided Tours/Tutorials.

The PlantGeneWiki website can be accessed from any of the following URL’s.

POST-DOCTORAL POSITION: Large-Scale Ecosystem Functioning

Understanding the effects of climate change and land use on ecosystem
functioning is a challenging question addressed by the team of
environmental and biological scientists on the BIOTA-AFRICA project
(www.biota-africa.org). As part of the BIOTA-Southern Africa (Phase III)
project, this post-doctoral fellowship will entail analyzing the
long-term data collated over the past 8 years from 35 observatories and
800 sub-sites across the southern African transect (from Cape Point,
South Africa, to Caprivi, Namibia). Specific questions involved in the
project include (1) relationships between abiotic factors (e.g. soil
nutrient content and habitat heterogeneity) with ecosystem structure and
community composition (e.g. woody cover and species turnover); (2) the
influence of land use on soil respiration and therefore ecosystem

My name is Robert Thompson. I have been working with teosinte samples,
extracting phytoliths from teosinte fruitcases. I have been successful in
building a database of known samples (100 phytoliths from each sample are
described in detail). I have been successful in working backwards from
blind samples to the teosintes from which they originated.

I recently did a blind test on an assemblage of phytoliths which
statistically identified as Zea mays parviglumis. However, I was informed
that the sample from which I extracted the phytoliths was Ames 21890,
identified as Zea diploperrenis. I repeated the process and again the
phytolith assemblage was typical of that from Zea mays parviglumis.

I then decided to try to increase my sample of Zea d. I discovered that
Ames 21890 was given me by Mary Eubanks when I was building my database,
but I had not run it. When I created phytolith assemblages from that sample
I found that they matched the results of the two blind tests, and rather
than being similar to two other Zea d samples Ames 21890 produced an
assemblage identical to those from Zea mays parviglumis.

Has anyone else worked with that particular accession, and if so did it
appear to be Zea d or Zea mays parviglumis, as I suspect?

I would ask for material from that accession from North Central, but the
accession has been removed from availability.

If anyone has 5 or 6 fruitcases left from that accession, I would like to
see if it again appears to be parviglumis, or if there may have been some
human error involved.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this.

Post-Doc Positions Available - University of Georgia, Athens, USA

1. Genetic Analysis of Switchgrass, a Bioenergy Crop

A 3-year postdoctoral position is available to work on a DOE-funded project
to enhance our understanding of the genetics of switchgrass, Panicum
virgatum. Switchgrass is a grass native to the USA and has many
characteristics which make it suitable for development as a bioenergy crop.
It is currently bred and grown for forage. Nevertheless, very little is
known about the genetics of switchgrass. Switchgrass is predominantly
tetraploid or octoploid, depending on the ecotype, and is an outcrossing
species. The project will involve marker development, genetic mapping,
linkage disequilibrium studies, and diversity and association analyses, and
is part of a larger initiative that focuses on enhancing the bioconversion
potential of switchgrass.

Individuals interested in the position should send a Curriculum Vitae,
including the names and contact information for at least three people who
can provide recommendations, to Katrien M. Devos, Dept. of Crop and Soil
Sciences and Dept. of Plant Biology, 3111 Miller Plant Sciences, University
of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602 ( <mailto:kdevos@...> kdevos@...). The
preferred start date for the position is February 1st 2009. Salary will be
commensurate with appropriate experience. Review of applications will start
on December 22nd and continue until a suitable applicant has been found.

2. Genetic Analysis of Foxtail Millet, a Model for Switchgrass

A 3-year postdoctoral position is available to work on a USDA/DOE-funded
project to develop foxtail millet as a model for switchgrass. Switchgrass
is being developed as a bioenergy crop, but its polyploid and largely
self-incompatible nature will complicate genetic analyses. Foxtail millet,
Setaria italica, a food crop grown mainly in Asia, is a close relative of
switchgrass and has the advantages, at least from a genetic point of view,
of being diploid and having a small and stable genome. The foxtail millet
genome will be sequenced by the DOE-Joint Genome Initiative and a 4X
sequence is expected to be available by Spring 2009. A mapping population
is being developed between Yugu1, the foxtail millet variety selected for
sequencing, and a S. viridis accession. S. viridis is the presumed
progenitor of foxtail millet. The project will involve sequencing of S.
viridis using next-generation sequencing technology, comparative analysis of
the S. italica and S. viridis sequence to identify SNP markers, construction
of a genetic map and anchoring of the sequence to the genetic map.

The
