You are invited to attend the Plant & Animal Genome XVIII Conference
(PAG-XVIII), January 9-13, 2010 taking place at the Town & Country
Convention Center in San Diego, California.

The meeting will again offer the satellite sessions and workshops which
took place at Plant & Animal Genome XVII. The meeting draft for
PAG-XVIII and abstracts from PG-I through PAG-XVII are available on the
PAG website listed below. The exhibits and posters will now take place
in the Grand Exhibit Hall, adjacent to the California room. We are no
longer using the lower level parking facility.

We are requesting that all abstracts be submitted electronically. The
abstract deadline is MONDAY, November 2, 2009; extended to allow for
the new registration process. The abstract submission website is now open.

All attendees looking to submit an abstract will be required to pay the
registration fee PRIOR to submitting their abstract. You will be
assigned an attendee ID# which will be issued once you complete the
on-line registration process. You can look up your ID# on the PAG

Due to severe delays in getting VISAs to enter the United States, we

The Missouri Plant Biology Symposium, organized by the University of Missouri Interdisciplinary Plant Group, will be on plant protein phopshorylation-dephoshorylation . The venue for the symposium is MU's Christopher S. Bond Life Sciences Center.

The symposium begins on Tuesday the 22nd and ends on the 24th with the speaker/student/postdoc dinner. There will be a satellite symposium that will overlap with this year's symposium on Plant Proteomics. This satellite meeting will include a joint session on phosphoproteomics on the afternoon of the 24th.

PhD Studentship - Purdue University

Sir/Madam,

I, Anthony Palathingal, am currently doing Masters in Biotechnology at the University of Essex, Uk. I have reached the final semester of my course which is undertaking a project titled Characterisation of the plant enzyme isoprene synthase and studying its behaviour in bacterial cells.

I would like to enhance my knowledge in the field of Plant sciences by pursuing a PhD in the same. I have always been interested in the genetic manifestations of the plant & microbial kingdoms. Understanding their metabolic pathways in their survival has always intrigued my ever inquisitive nature.

In the Masters dissertation, I have been working on the enzyme isoprene synthase by characterizing it in the bacterial specie E.coli. I have been able to confirm the conserved residues in the Kudzu Isoprene synthase according to Sharkey (2005) and have carried out site directed mutagenesis to bring about point mutations. The study further involves checking if there lies any difference between the amount of isoprene production between the wild type and the mutant constructs.

The project has helped me in understanding and practising various biological techniques, like cloning, PCR, transformation, automated sequencing, electrophoresis, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry.

My personal strengths have always been about understanding the subject thoroughly before I get down to the practical work. I am hard-working and can easily adapt to the given situation, irrespective of the level of hardness. I would be highly obliged if you could let me know of available PhD studentships.

Functional Genomics of Plant Disease Defense

A postdoctoral research position is available immediately in the Iowa State University Center for Plant Responses to Enviromental Stresses under the direction of Drs. Roger Wise and Steve Whitham. The overall goals of the NSF-Plant Genome project "Functional Genomics of Plant Disease Defense Pathways" http://nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward.do?AwardNumber=0500461 are to utilize functional genomics tools and resources available to barley, rice, and the model dicot Arabidopsis thaliana, to accelerate comparative analysis of disease defense pathways important in agriculture.

Candidates will work with a team responsible for molecular, genetic, and functional characterization of gene-specific sequences associated with and required for R-gene mediated resistance responses using barley powdery mildew as a model system. Approaches include utilization of the 22K Affymetrix Barley1 GeneChip to characterize the transcriptional networks regulated during powdery mildew induced programmed cell death and subsequent high-throughput reverse genetic systems in barley and Arabidopsis to functionally validate candidate genes in resistance pathways of both monocot and dicot plants. All of the above approaches will be facilitated by well-characterized, high-resolution, recombinant mapping populations, accelerated cell-death mutants, RNAi and TILLING silencing systems, BAC, cosmid, and cDNA library resources.

Funding is available up to three years. Salary is commensurate with experience. Ph.D. required in genetics, molecular biology, plant physiology, plant pathology or related field. Experience in bioinformatics/computational/statistical analysis, single-cell transcript profiling, RNAi mediated gene silencing, cell biology, and/or high-throughput gene mapping is desirable.
