Dear Sir/Madam

Currently I am working my PhD on the genetic diversity of Schistosoma mansoni in Ethiopia, enrolled at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. I had collected miracidia and adult worm for molecular analysis. However, I am not able to find grant for the molecular laboratory work to go abroad. Thus I am asking your goodness if you can assist me in finding grant for short research visit.

Information on Bivitellobilharzia ; origin of schistosomes

ORIGIN OF SCHISTOSOMES ; STATUS OF BIVITELLOBILHARZIA

In the evolutionary scale proboscids (elephants) have originated during late ecocene epoch while ungulates evolved much later. For this reason, schistosomes of proboscids may be considered Parental stock from which schistosomes of ungulates evolved. Though there are numerous schistosome species affecting ungulates , there is only one genus i.e. Bivitellobilharzia with two species which is known to occur in elephants. B.loxodonte occurs in African elephants and B.nairi in Indian elephants. The snail host for B.loxodonte is a Planorbid while that of B.nairi is still not confirmed.
As elephants arrived much earlier than the ungulates, it is possible that Bivitellobilharizia has evolved much earlier in elephants and existing till date.The other possibility is of its originating in ungulate era and than transmitting to elephants. But this does not appear probable as Bivitellobilharizia is not reported from any ungulate. Therefore, B.nairi and B.loxodonte have neither switched their host specificity nor enlarged their host range as they are still reported only from the elephants. It is interesting to investigate how the schistosomes was able to survive millions of years only on the basis of single host specificity – both on intermediate and final host level.
If we consider that Bivitellobilharzia has not affected ungulates during evolution, than what is the origin of Schistosoma or Orientobilharzia-both occurring in ungulates or prodontocotyles but not in proboscids. On morphological grounds, Orientobilharzia is more close to Bivitellobilharzia as both have large number of testes (30-70) and a terminal spined egg. But neither Orientobilharzia is occurring in elephants nor any species of Bivitellobilharzia is seen in ungulates making it doubtful if they evolved from each other. The case of Schistosoma is more difficult to explain.
Does it mean Schistosoma and Orientobilharzia have not evolved from Bivitellobilharzia ? If so , what are the reasons ? Who is the parental stock of Schistosoma or Orientobilharzia ?
On evolutionaly scale, birds have come much earlier than mammals.It is also an accepted fact that mammalian schistosomes have evolved from avians.The best example was genus Ornithobilharzia that contained schistosomes normally infecting birds but occasionally observed in mammals too. This genus was dismantled by Dutt and Srivastava (1955) who instead created two genus. Orientobilharzia who infects exclusively mammals and Sinobilharzia who infects birds. This suggests Orientobilharzia may be the parental stock for Schistosoma species .However, it fails to answer position of Bivitellobilharzia in this evolutionary hypothesis which is important to understand schistosome evolution.

I will highly appreciate to receive a response from the Parasitologists/Taxonomists on my our contention. If any institution is interested to search in above line, he is welcome to contact the undersigned.

Gates Foundation Now Accepting Proposals for Grand Challenges Explorations Round 2

This is Pensri Tasnavites, Director and Strategic Advisor of Health Counterparts Consulting & consultant for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Southeast Asia region. I'm writing to update you about -- the upcoming application for the global health grants awarded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, entitled the Grand Challenges Explorations initiative. The program aims to contribute to global health development with targeted funding for innovative ways to cure and prevent diseases.

The program awards grants multiple times per year at approximately $100,000 each, plus additional funding of $1 million or more is available for projects that show promise. I have also attached the poster for your kind information and dissemination.

The first round of Grand Challenges Explorations has been completed recently, with many of the winners from four continents worldwide, including the United States, Thailand, Uganda, Kenya, India, Cameroon, Mexico, Bangladesh, Italy, Germany, UK and France.

Gates Foundation Now Accepting Proposals for Grand Challenges Explorations Round 2

SEATTLE – The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced today that it is now accepting grant proposals for Round 2 of Grand Challenges Explorations, a five-year US$100 million initiative to encourage bold and unconventional research on new global health solutions. Proposals for six topics will be accepted online at www.gcgh.org/explorations through November 2, 2008.

Round 2 follows on the heels of the initiative's first funding round, which closed in May of this year, and generated nearly 4,000 applications from scientists in more than 100 countries. Two new topics are being introduced in Round 2 along with the initial four topics from Round 1.

One of the primary objectives of Grand Challenges Explorations is to involve scientists around the world who do not typically work in global health. This includes those with innovative ideas in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the developing world; people working in the private sector; and young investigators.

The initiative uses an agile, accelerated grant-making process. Applications are two pages, and preliminary data about the proposed research are not required. In addition, the online application process has been streamlined for Round 2.

The topic areas for which proposals will be accepted in Round 2 are:

Create new vaccines for diarrhea, HIV, malaria, pneumonia, and TB
Create new tools to accelerate the eradication of malaria
Create new ways to protect against infectious diseases, including alternatives to traditional vaccination
Create new drugs and delivery systems to limit the emergence of resistance in the disease-causing agent
Create new ways to prevent or cure HIV infection that fall outside current research on vaccines and other biomedical and behavior-change strategies
Explore the basis for latency in TB, with the goal of discovering new ways to identify and eliminate latent infection

The foundation and an independent group of reviewers will select the most innovative proposals, and grants will be awarded within approximately three months from the proposal submission deadline. Initial grants will be $100,000 each. Projects showing success will have the opportunity to receive additional funding of $1 million or more. Round 1 grants are expected to be announced in October.

It is our pleasure to announce officially that the 9th International Meeting "Molecular Epidemiology and Evolutionary Genetics of Infectious Diseases" (MEEGID IX), will be held at UC Irvine, California.

MEEGID IX will be co-organized by the University of California at Irvine (http://www.uci.edu/) and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD; http://www.ird.fr/) in France. Principal organizers are Francisco J. Ayala (Dept Ecology and Evolution, UC Irvine) and Michel Tibayrenc (IRD).

Communications on genetics, genomics, proteomics, phylogenetics, population biology, mathematical modeling, and bioinformatics are welcome. They can report on the host, the pathogen, or the vector for vector-borne diseases. Papers considering host + pathogen or pathogen + vector (co-evolution) are particularly encouraged. All pathogens are within the scope of MEEGID: viruses, parasitic protozoa, helminths, fungal organisms, and prions. All infectious models can be explored, including those of veterinary or agronomical relevance.

The MEEGID meetings are organized in synergy with the new journal Infection, Genetics and Evolution (Elsevier; http://www.elsevier.com/locate/meegid), covering the same scientific topic. Launched only 6 years ago, Infection, Genetics and Evolution is now published with six issues per year, and has been indexed by Medline and Index Medicus, starting from the first issue. It has been quoted 3.5/5.0 ("very good") by the US National Library of Medicine. It is now covered by ISI and the official impact factor for 2007 is 2.407 (ISI Web of knowledge).

The papers communicated for MEEGID IX will be published in a special issue of Infection, Genetics and Evolution, as already done for MEEGID VI (Paris, July 2002) and MEEGID VIII (Bangkok, Thailand, November 2006). MEEGID IX will include 10-15 plenary lectures, about 20 specialized symposia, 12-15 "express-debates" (a 20-min presentation by a single speaker followed by 40 min of free discussion) and several poster sessions.

Special emphasis through plenary lectures and symposia will be given to health problems of particular interest to mediterranean and tropical countries: AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis (especially multidrug resistant TB), sleeping sickness, leishmanioses, Chagas disease, ebola, bird flu, Chikungunya, as well as cattle and crop pathogens. Plenary lectures and symposia will also deal with transversal topics such as population genetics or species concepts. The congress is open to proposals for conferences and symposia.

Awards will be attributed to the best oral communication, the best oral communication by a scientist from the Southern World on a problem specifically relevant to these areas, the best oral communication by a student, and the best communication by poster. Each prize winner will be offered a free 2-year subscription to Infection, Genetics and Evolution.

The abstract submission deadline is the 30th September 2008.

Registration Fee: 200.00 euros or equivalent in other currencies. Reduced fees upon request for scientists from developing countries who do not have international funds. Registration fees are waived for students.

Schistosome production question

I've currently been researching Schistosomiasis reproduction and phases in and outside it's intermediate host. I've been noticing cercaria development phases in connection to red and blue fibers. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Technology for experimental schistosomiasis developed in our laboratory

Dear colleagues,

I happen to review a few papers for our Indian
scientific journals including those of Parasitology. A
few papers pertained to schistosomiasis from African
countries where the disease is existing both in man
and animals. Vetting of the papers indicated that some
laboratories are following old methodology for
studying experimental schistosomiasis. Thus they are
killing mice and recovering the blood flukes without
use of perfusion technique/ anticoagulants. Formalin
fixed intestine /liver pieces are being used to assess
oogram, granuloma, live and dead eggs etc.
PERFUSION TECHNIQUE
These facts surprised me as long back(in 1978) we have
shown entangling of blood flukes in blood clots if
anticoagulants are not used; developed a simple
perfusion technique for laboratory animals using
automatic pipetting machine .
EGGS PER SQUARE CM AREA OF LIVER
We have developed a simple method where a single slide
of fresh liver piece may be used simultaneously for
knowing egg concentration per square cm of liver/ live
and dead eggs, granuloma number and their size.
INFECTING DOMESTIC ANIMALS
For domestic animals like pigs ,sheep and goats we
have developed a polythene pinna technique for
infecting them with accurate number of schistosome
cercariae (without sedation),
PERFUSION WITH VERTICAL WATER PUMP used a vertical
water pump , instead of a peristaltic pump , for
perfusing the animals , thus reducing the cost of
operation.
BREEDING AND INFECTING SNAILS
We have developed a simple method of breeding and
infecting snails with the schistosome miracidia where
no daily care is needed .Our method is used for
producing large number of infected snails.
The techniques were the result of our thirty five
years devotion to Indian schistosomes and
schistosomiasis. Certainly these techniques are of
great importance to the laboratories who are working
on schistosomes and schistosomiasis. Presently, I am
working as Emeritus Scientist of Indian Council of
Agriculture Research on the scheme Control of
schistosomiasis under field conditions where I am
evaluating triclabendazole in curing the infection etc
