Anesthetics and Analgesics for Axolotls

Hello Natalie,

Please, can I have the summary of responses to these questions:

1) Do axolotls need a post leg amputation analgesic? If not why not? If
they do, what sort is appropriate? For how long into the regeneration
period do they require painkillers?

2) Is there another anesthetic other than MS222 appropriate for
anesthetising the axolotls for such an amputation?

Shenandoah Salamander

population of 17,121 as of February 2007.

I have 2 albinos. I have had them for 6 yrs from eggs.

one has completely lost its feet and the other is close behind also one has white matter around its gills

what can I do to save them. I have salt bathed them once and made sure the tank is clean and water condition good.

If they make it can we still get food @ the biology building on 3rd??

axolotl problems

Hi Saul

My name is Kara Hay and I have an axolotl at home wich is very sick.

I came home one day and I found it lying on its back buut it was still alive.

It swims upside down and sideways. I dont know if its dying or if its really sick. I

clean out the tank regulary and I feed it little bits of ham, chicken and worms.

I really need some help and if you have the answer then please email me back on

Holiday Break and GFP Axolotls

Due to the Holiday Season, and not always predictable and reliable shipping during this time, we are suspending all animal shipments until the New Year, probably around 01/08/2007.

If you would like any axolotls earlier than the 8th of January (Jan. 2nd - 5th), just let us know and we should be able to ship some then, too.

We will still continue to ship out any orders for food or other supplies that are non-perishable.

We have quite a few (150+) larvae GFP-expressing axolotls between 2-4 cm and about 200-300 GFP embryos (75% are positive GFP-expressing) around gastrula stage (stage 10) at the moment, but will likely hatch around the first of the year. So, if anyone is interested in obtaining any of these, please let us know. Prices we have set for the GFP-expressing axolotls are below.

Hello everyone!

You are receiving this e-mail because you are a current user of the Ambystoma Genetic Stock Center. We appreciate your patronage and are here to support your research and education needs. We are in the process of creating a list of users on the AGSC website. We would like to list user address, email, and website information: to be included on the website, please send this information by e-mail (to: ambystoma@...). If you know of anyone we should add to the website or e-mail group, please let us know.

The AGSC has been in operation a little more than 1 year at University of Kentucky. The axolotl collection that was housed previously at Indiana University is now well acclimated. Our plan is to periodically send out e-mails to announce new products (e.g. GFP-expressing axolotls!), as well as information concerning research and sales items. We will also send out a survey sometime within the next month to obtain feedback about AGSC products and services.

We would appreciate receiving recent publications/citation pertaining to your work with the Mexican axolotl. Hopefully in the near future we will be able to quickly identify all axolotl-enabled work via database searches using keywords and integrate this information into the Sal-Site website (www.ambystoma.org). In this respect, it would be helpful to include 'axolotl' or 'ambystoma' as keywords in your manuscripts.

Finally, it is very important for all AGSC and Sal-Site users to acknowledge NSF and NIH funding mechanisms in the acknowledgements sections of your publications. Both NSF and NIH program directors encourage acknowledgement of federal support for Ambystoma research resources. Thus:

· If your published work is based upon material obtained from the AGSC or information obtained from the AGSC website, the NSF requests that you cite the AGSC and the specific grant supporting the AGSC. The NSF-funded AGSC is supported by the following grant mechanism: NSF-DBI-0443496.

· If your published work is based upon genome resources or bioinformation obtained from the Sal-Site website, the National Center for Research Resources at the National Institutes of Health requests that you cite the specific grant that supports Ambystoma research resource development. Axolotl husbandry question

Greetings! I had a quick question about axolotl husbandry. We have a
small number of animals that are missing limbs, presumably from eating each
other. They seem healthy otherwise. Is this a serious problem or
something that is commonly encountered? What should we do to stop this
from happening? Should we keep individuals isolated? Thanks. Ramon
