Sent: Mon, 2 Nov 2009 18:47:50 -0600 (CST)
Subject: [Taxacom] Bivalve systematics postdoc at the Field Museum

A postdoctoral position is available for a full-time researcher in the
Bivalves-in-Time-and-Space project.

Initial appointment for this Field Museum-based term position is made for 12
months, with opportunity for performance-based renewal for up to 22 months.
Starting salary is $40,000.

The position is part of a larger NSF-funded project (
http://www.bivatol.org/BiTS/) that aims to develop bivalves as a model clade
for macroevolutionary studies, taking advantage of their excellent fossil
record to test methods of molecular clock dating, ancestral state
reconstruction, historical biogeography, and detecting spatial and temporal
trends in evolution. The specific responsibilities of this particular
position will involve morphological and taxonomic studies of Recent and
fossil members of the marine bivalve family Veneridae. The successful
applicant will also participate in regular meetings and possible
collaborations with other members of the research team (S. Steppan, D.
Jablonski, P. Mikkelsen, J. Huelsenbeck, J.J. ter Poorten) who are working
on corresponding morphological, paleontological, molecular, and
computational components.

Opportunity will exist for “first-authored” project development as well as
for exposure to additional (e.g., molecular) techniques.

The candidate should have the following proven attributes:

-- PhD in relevant area

-- Experience in morphological techniques and approaches

-- Strong interest in species-level diversity

-- Capacity to work in a team as well as independently

-- Availability in early 2010

Interested candidates should send a CV, statement of research interests, and
contact information for three references via email (pdf) to Rüdiger Bieler (
rbieler@...).

Evaluation of applications will begin on November 15 and continue until a
suitable candidate is found. Earliest starting date will be in January
2010.
Subject: Can you help shed some light?

It is widely known that a breast cancer diagnosis can have far reaching effects both socially and emotionally. Less well understood are the ways in which a breast cancer diagnosis impacts the well-being and quality of life of women who have historically been underserved by the medical community. Lesbian and bisexual women are one of these underserved populations, and little research has been done to assess their health and well-being as breast cancer survivors. Identifying their unique needs by asking questions related to health and well-being in a survey will help researchers to develop culturally appropriate survivorship programs for these women.

The researchers conducting the study have already recruited all of the heterosexual women they need for this study, and now they need your help to find all of the lesbian and bisexual women who are needed for this call to action.

If this study isn’t a right fit for you, but you know someone who might be interested in participating, please pass it on. It is a tough study to fill and we need everyone’s help.

What's the study about?

The information gained from this research into the well-being and quality of life of lesbian and bisexual breast cancer survivors will be used to develop programs and services designed to reduce health disparities.

What's involved?

If you choose to join this study, you will be asked to take part in a phone survey that will last approximately 35 minutes. Questions about your health, medical history, sexual orientation, and demographics will be asked. One hundred women are needed for this study.

Who can participate?

You can sign up for the Variations in the Health Needs of Breast Cancer Survivors study if you match ALL of these main categories:
•	You identify as lesbian or bisexual, or as a woman who partners with women.
•	You were diagnosed with breast cancer between 2000-2005
•	You were at least 21 years old at the time of diagnosis
•	You were diagnosed with DCIS, or stage I, II, or III breast cancer

•	You have only been diagnosed with breast cancer one time, you have not had a recurrence
•	You have never been diagnosed with ANOTHER invasive cancer, other than breast cancer
The researcher may ask you additional questions to be sure that this study is a right fit for you.

Who is conducting the study?

Ulrike Boehmer, PhD, at the Boston University School of Public Health

Where?

Anywhere in the United States

Fixed-term appointment, 22 months full-time.

Based at the Natural History Museum, South Kensington, Salary £28,000 p.a.

The Natural History Museum is leading a Work Package within a project funded through the EU Framework 7 Capacities Work Programme, entitled "A Pan-European Species-directories Infrastructure" (http://www.eu-nomen.eu/pesi <http://www.eu-nomen.eu/pesi> ). This 3-year project, which commenced in May 2008, is led by the University of Amsterdam and involves 40 partner organisations from 26 countries. PESI will integrate the infrastructural components of four major community networks on taxonomic indexing, namely those of marine life, terrestrial plants, fungi and animals, into a joint work programme. In addition, PESI will set up networks of both taxonomic experts and regional focal points and will work to address the issues of pooling resources, standardisation, sustainability, accessibility and international cooperation.

Work Package 4, led by the NHM deals with the development, integration and application of taxonomic standards. We shall be working closely with relevant standards organisations and nomenclators (such as GBIF, ZooBank, IPNI, Index Fungorum and Algaebase). Work will include development of management classification schemes, a controlled terminology for species status and utilisation of globally unique identifiers for names (GUIDs). Required deliverables will take the form of four reports to the EU Commission.

You will be working under the direction of the Work Package Leader and will have responsibility for undertaking the NHM programme of work. You will be liaising closely with the five other partners in the work package and with other work packages. There will be a small amount of foreign travel to attend meetings.

You will be expected to have the ability both to work on your own initiative and as part of a collaborative team. You will be good at assessing facts and making reasoned judgements. A working knowledge of databases (preferably to do with biodiversity informatics), and of a European language, would be useful. You will have experience of producing technical reports. You will be able to demonstrate a familiarity with biological nomenclature and taxonomic classification. You must have a degree in a biological science or a computing discipline, preferably at PhD level, together with substantial experience as a professional or academic natural scientist or computer scientist.

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Greetings from the Center for Asia Pacific Women in Politics (CAPWIP) and the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UN-ISDR)!

We are pleased to invite you to the Third Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance which will be held on October 19-22, 2008 at the Dusit Hotel, Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines. The theme of the congress is “Gender and Climate Change”.

Women and environment experts have raised concern over the absence of women in the discourse and debate on climate change, a global mainstream issue that is currently impacting the entire world. The involvement of women in areas of environmental management and governance should not be perceived as an afterthought. Women's roles are of considerable importance in the promotion of environmental ethics.
The current imperative is for women to understand the phenomenon of climate change and its impacts and implications at the individual, household, community and national levels. Studies show that women have a definite information deficit on climate politics and climate protection. Only with this information can women take their proper, significant and strategic role in the issue of climate change.
Invited to this congress are women parliamentarians, women in decision - making and governance, environment organizations, youth Leaders and Media Practitioners
The Congress will have the following objectives:
Overall Purpose: To provide a forum for women legislators, and women in decision making and environment organizations at all levels, in formulating gender-responsive legislation and policies.

Specific Objectives:
a) To understand the phenomenon of climate change, its impacts and implications;
b). to review and examine the gender aspects of climate change and formulate appropriate actions to address such;
c). to define the roles women can play in addressing the issues of climate change at the global, national and sub-national levels; and
d). to identify and define the action agenda for parliamentarians, policy advocates and women leaders to support global and national actions to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Congress Proceedings:
The discussion on gender and climate change will be organized around identifying the challenges to action as well as defining the appropriate responses to effectively address the impacts of climate change. Inputs to the discussion will be collected and organized around: 1) geographic location and 2) types of actions: i.e. preparedness, risk reduction: building community resilience; adaptation; and mitigation. Cross cutting these discussions will be the identification of technologies in aid of responding to climate change.
The focus of the discussions will revolve around defining and elaborating actions (i.e. preparedness, disaster risk reduction, adaptation, and mitigation) to cope with climate change and its impacts.
Preparedness and disaster risk reduction is about building individual and community capacities to position themselves and their communities so that the likelihood of climate change-induced disasters is reduced; the intensity or adverse impacts of disasters are cushioned and that inhabitants are able to respond promptly, expeditiously and effectively. Adaptation entails actions that moderate harm, or exploit benefits, of climate change. Mitigation entails actions that minimizes or cushions the adverse impacts of climate change.
In all of these actions, special attention will be given to defining how women and gender could be mainstreamed. In other words, the Congress should define how women can be given the social space to participate, influence, and benefit from global and local responses to climate change.
The registration fee for the four day congress is one hundred eight thousand Philippine Pesos (P108, 000). per person for single room accommodations and Eighty eight thousand Philippine Pesos (P88, 000). per person for twin room sharing accommodations (two persons in one room). We are sending you the detailed information sheet (which contains the registration form) as an attachment to this email.

The training will be held on Oct 19-22, 2008. However, the participants will be requested to be in Manila the day before, October 18, 2008 and leave Manila only on October 23, 2008. The overnight hotel accommodation on October 18, 2008 is already included in the fee. Participants will be billeted in the Dusit Hotel, the venue of the congress and hotels near the Dusit Hotel, accessible within walking distance. Room accommodations in the Dusit Hotel, the venue of the Congress will be on a first come - first served basis.

You can also download the full information sheet and registration form for this Third Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance from our website, <http://www.capwip.org>

Importance of the Congress

Today, on the average, one person out of nineteen in a developing country will be hit by a climate disaster, compared to 1 out of 1,500 in an OECD country. Climate change creates life time traps: in Niger, a child born during a drought is 72 percent more likely to be stunted than a child born during a normal season.

We hope that your organization can send participants to the Third Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance. The Theme of “Gender and Climate Change” is the first time this will be discussed in a forum whose objective is to formulate gender responsive legislation and policies for national governments and parliaments.

We truly hope that the environment organizations will find this forum a good opportunity to advocate gender and climate change policies and programs through gender responsive legislation to the women parliamentarians, decision makers, the youth leaders, media and the funding agencies/organizations. Let us join hands in promoting gender responsive governance through transformative leadership and citizenship. We are looking forward to your participation.

Very truly yours,

(signed)

My cousin is a high school junior in
Nome, Alaska. She has a strong interest in science and wants to pursue science
studies beyond what is currently available to her in her high school. She has
participated in summer science camps the past couple years. She, and her
parents, are open to the idea of her transfering to a WA state high school.
Can you recommend programs which might be available to her in Alaska, online, or
in Washington state? Do you know of appropriate exchange programs for which she
might qualify? Any advice? Thanks for your time.

 New York Times - Dec. 8, 2006 - Obituaries

 ESTHER LEDERBERG, 83, SCIENTIST WHO
 IDENTIFIED STEALTHY VIRUS, DIES

Esther Lederberg, a microbiologist who identified a stealthy virus
that invades bacteria and hides within its DNA, often emerging later
to do its destructive work, died Nov. 11 in Stanford, Calif. She was
83.

The cause was complications of congestive heart failure and pneumonia,
her family said.

Dr. Lederberg was also a central member of a team led by her husband,
Joshua Lederberg, who shared a Nobel Prize for genetic research in
1958.

In the early 1950s, while conducting experiments with E. coli
bacteria, Esther Lederberg discovered a previously unreported virus
that was infecting the bacteria but doing no immediate harm to the
host organism. She found that the virus, which she named the lambda
phage, was being transmitted through bacterial matings and ordinary
genetic material. It would then remain dormant or, under certain
circumstances, awaken to destroy the host.

Her findings helped explain how phages pass between generations of
bacteria. Her research also served as a model to help unlock the
mechanism of genetic inheritance in more complex viruses.

Working with her husband and others, Dr. Lederberg subsequently
developed a successful method of rapidly transferring colonies of
bacteria from one glass plate to another. Their method called for a
velvet cloth to be placed over the colonies and then pressed onto a
second plate treated with an antibiotic or a virus. The technique,
called replica plating, is still in use and enables researchers to
isolate bacteria that are resistant to compounds on the plates.

For work in bacterial genetics, Joshua Lederberg shared the Nobel
Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1958 with two other researchers,
George W. Beadle and Edward L. Tatum. The next year, he and his wife
moved to Stanford University, where she took an untenured research
position. They divorced in 1966.

>From 1978 to 1990, Joshua Lederberg was president of the Rockefeller
University, the biomedical research institution in New York.
Yesterday, President Bush announced that he was a recipient of the
Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award.

In the 1970s and 80s, Esther Lederberg assumed a curatorial role at
Stanford and directed its Plasmid Reference Center, a collection of
DNA molecules derived mainly from bacteria. She retired in 1985 but
continued to volunteer at the plasmid center.

Esther Miriam Zimmer was born in the Bronx. She attended Hunter
College and received a master’s degree from Stanford. In 1950, she
earned her doctorate in bacterial genetics from the University of
Wisconsin.

Dr. Lederberg is survived by her husband of 13 years, Matthew Simon.
The couple lived in Stanford. She is also survived by a brother,
Benjamin Zimmer of the Bronx.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/08/obituaries/08lederberg.html?_r=1&ref=obituaries&oref=slogin

_______________________________________________

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Subtle Technologies 2007

in situ
art • body • medicine

May 24th – May 27th 2007
University of Toronto, Toronto Canada

Submission Deadline January 3, 2007.

Subtle Technologies is a four-day multidisciplinary Festival exploring
complex and subtle relationships between art and science. The annual
international event combines symposia, exhibitions, workshops and
performances that juxtapose cutting-edge artistic projects and
scientific exploration.

For the 10th Annual Festival, Subtle Technologies invites
practitioners of arts, sciences and medicines, and those who study
their context, historians, ethicists, and other critical thinkers to
contemplate how these disciplines can work together and reshape
perspectives on the body.

As scientific and technological breakthroughs prominently occupy our
culture, we ask where the boundaries are. We are interested in
investigating how we relate bodies in situ: as parts, as a whole, as
systems; how we identify, map, modify, protect, violate, and heal.

We invite a wide interpretation of bodies including the molecular,
physical, cultural, economic, legal, political, energetic, electrical
and spiritual.

A range of approaches are welcome, including interdisciplinary work,
specialized presentation proposals that focus on a single topic in
depth, and general discussions that draw upon multiple topics. We
welcome a diversity of presentation formats, including those
practitioners who may not emphasize the use of science and technology.

Proposals for the following will be considered:
workshops, performances, poster sessions, and symposium presentations.

How to Apply:
Details are available on the online submissions form.
http://www.subtletechnologies.com/2007/?page_id=35

Examples of possible topics include:
Tele-Medicine
Pharmaceuticalized Body
Organ Trafficking
Inter- Species Communications
History of Medicine
Reproductive Technologies
Addictions and Obsessions
Sexual / Gendered Body
Body Machine Interfaces and Sensors

Please visit the AAAS Career Discussion Forum during our special Guest
Adviser week of July 17th. This week, we have two consultants with us
who will address your questions and career interests in consulting
careers. Both Dr. John Greene and Dr. Clare Ozawa are with us all week,

ready to answer your questions and to discuss their mutual areas of
expertise.
Dr. Ozawa will be responding to questions about the field of business
consulting. As an in-house expert at McKinsey, Clare Ozawa took an
unusal turn with her career (after a PhD in Neurosciences from
Stanford). This led her away from the bench and into a role at one of
the world's best-known consulting firms, where she is an Engagement
Manager for the company. Many people who are targeting consulting
careers know about McKinsey and their reputation for hiring large
numbers of MBA's and PhD's. Clare will help us make sense of what the

Dr. Greene is a scientist and well-known expert in the field of

Postdoc position: theoretical population genetics and bioinformatics of
evolvability

Evolutionary capacitor mechanisms such as alternative splicing and the
heat shock protein Hsp90 store variation in a latent form and reveal it
later. Capacitors appear to be common, and could have a significant impact
in facilitating evolution. The project is to develop theoretical
population genetic models of evolutionary capacitance in finite
populations, and to test predictions of the models in the case of the
yeast prion [PSI+] using a bioinformatic / comparative genomic approach. A
variety of concepts in evolutionary biology will be explored and made
rigorous, including evolvability, preadaptation and genetic assimilation.

The postdoc will work with PI Joanna Masel
