We are offering RapiData 2010, the twelvth offering of our popular course:

Rapid Data Collection and Structure Solving at the NSLS: A Practical
Course in Macromolecular X-Ray Diffraction Measurement

The course will be held 11-16 April 2010. Students could be at any level
from advanced undergraduate to full professor. The course should
accommodate 48 students total. All students are encouraged to bring their
own specimens for data collection, and to bring old data for the
data-reduction and structure-solving tutorials. Please read the Course

experts in the field will be available for lectures and tutorials.
You'll find the application materials on the Course Application tab at
this site.

For the eighth time we will hold a short lecture course on the
fundamentals of crystallography for roughly five hours on Sunday 11 April.
The body of the RapiData course really requires that students have a
healthy knowledge of crystallography. For potential students who have
some experience but are shaky about fundamentals, this course will help.
There will be a small additional fee for the fundamentals course, to pay
for Saturday night accomodations and food on Sunday morning and noon.

Latin American Scientists: Several scholarships are available, from the
International Union of Crystallography, to pay partial travel and
subsistence costs for Latin-American students and junior faculty. Please
apply for the course, and then contact R. Sweet (sweet@...) if you are
interested in applying for a scholarship. In accordance with the
standards of the International Union of Crystallography, we observe the
basic policy of non-discrimination, affirming the right and freedom of
scientists to associate in international scientific activity without
regard to such factors as citizenship, religion, creed, political stance,

Beam time is available at the NSLS

Please visit the website at www.px.nsls.bnl.gov and select "Get Access to
Beam Time." The PXRR (Macromolecular Crystallography Research Resource at
the NSLS) operates five beamlines for macromolecular crystallography (MX).

Two of these beamlines are undulators: X29 is the most efficient MX
machine east of Chicago in the US, often serving three different research
groups in a day. X25 is as bright, and has counted Rod MacKinnon, Tom
Steitz, and Venki Ramakrishnan among its prize-winning users. Typical beam
sizes at these undulators are 50 microns. If your crystal is only 20
microns, we can give you a beam that size.

There are ALS-style automounters at X29 and two of our dipole beamlines,
X12-B and X12-C.

We have a new station at X26-C for the coordinated measurement of optical
absorption spectroscopic and x-ray diffraction data. Several publications
have come from this work and many projects are underway. A Raman
spectrometer is being installed now.

The PXRR is funded jointly by the NIH's National Center for Research
Resources and the DOE's Office of Biological and Environmental Research.

Visualizing Biological Data, 3-5 March 2010: Deadline on 16 Nov 2009

We invite you to participate in the first

EMBO Workshop on Visualizing Biological Data (VizBi, http://www.vizbi.org)

3 - 5 March 2010 at the EMBL's new Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg, Germany

The goal of the workshop is to bring together, for the first time, researchers developing and using visualization systems across all
areas of biology, including genomics, sequence analysis, macromolecular structures, systems biology, and imaging (including
microscopy and magnetic resonance imaging). We have assembled an authoritative list of 29 invited speakers who will present an
exciting program, reviewing the state-of-the-art and perspectives in each of these areas. The primary focus will be on visualizing
processed and annotated data in their biological context, rather than on processing of raw data.

The workshop is limited in the total number participants, and each participant is normally required to present a poster and to give
a 'fastforward' presentation about their work (limited to 30 seconds and 1 slide).

To apply to join the workshop, please go to http://vizbi.org and submit an abstract and image related to your work. Submissions
close on 16 November 2009. Since places are limited, participants will be selected based on the relevance of their work to the
goals of the workshop. Notifications of acceptance will be sent within three weeks after the close of submissions.

We plan to award a prize for the submitted image that best conveys a strong scientific message in a visually compelling manner.

Research Associate in Time resolved Laue x-ray protein crystallography

A Research Associate position is available in the Division of Molecular Biosciences at Imperial College London in the field of time resolved Laue X-ray crystallography of light sensitive proteins in the group of Dr. Jasper van Thor. The successful candidate will develop and employ experiments for time resolved X-ray diffraction using the pink-Laue technique at specialised beam line stations that combine pulsed broadband hard X-rays with pulsed optical excitation, at the SLS, APS and ESRF.

The work will be conducted in a multidisciplinary environment which includes facilities for ultrafast electronic and vibrational spectroscopies to support the optical control of photolysis and reaction initiation in macromolecular crystals.

The research deals with the light induced reactions in photoreceptors and fluorescent proteins and will focus on crystallisation of existing and new targets, analysis and optimisation of Laue diffraction, data processing and structure calculation of sub-ns intermediates. Additionally, the group provides support for ultrafast spectroscopic investigation of light induced reactions in targets and you will also work with members in the team on the spectroscopic characterisation and photolysis control.

The successful candidate would have completed a PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry or Physics or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience and a have track record in Structural Biology. You will have extensive experience in monochromatic and/or Laue protein X-ray crystallography using synchrotron beam line stations or alternatively neutron diffraction. You will also have a proven track record in crystallographic data processing and structure calculation. Experience with molecular biology, protein purification and crystallisation is desirable but not essential. Experience in biomolecular spectroscopy would be an advantage but is not essential.

Postdoctoral position

A postdoctoral fellow position is available for an individual with a
significant amount of training and experience (3+ years) in the
methods of structual biology (X-ray crystallography or NMR) and
experimental / wet-lab biochemistry, particularly as applied to RNA
and protein*RNA complexes. A Ph.D. is not required, but candidates
should have a clear record of success (publications), ideally in at
least two of the following broad areas:

1) Cloning and protein expression → purification → crystallization
methodologies, including PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, protein over-
expression & purification, protein and RNA crystallization, etc.

2) Biochemical and biophysical methods, such as Western blotting, P32-
labelling of oligonucleotides and gel-shift assays, analytical
ultracentrifugation, CD spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, light
scattering, etc.

3) X-ray Crystallography or NMR, including structure determination
and refinement; protein and nucleic acid structure analysis; NMR-based
mapping of protein↔nucleic acid interactions; expertise in Linux-based
operation of software packages commonly used in structural biology
(CCP4, CNS, Coot, MODELLER, O, PyMOL, SHELX, etc.).

(i) A statement of interest (in cover letter format), specifying
interest in either a postdoctoral or longer-term (research staff)

and Marc Allaire, of the NSLS at Brookhaven National Lab.

We invite you to learn from the foremost structural biologists using
micro-focused x-ray beams and from the most experienced designers of their
beamlines about the unique scientific and experimental capabilities at the
one-micron scale. We invite you to take part in discussions of these
recent developments. We invite you to weigh in on how they may be
translated to the design new crystallographic beamlines at NSLS-II in ways
that will optimally serve your needs and fully exploit the uniquely small,
stable, and brilliant beams expected to become available here by 2014.

This workshop in the 'New Opportunities' series initiated by Qun Shen, the
NSLS-II Experimental Facilities Director, will explore structural biology
scientific opportunities made possible through the use of micro-beams. It
will include studies of difficult-to-crystallize systems and systems for
which only small or imperfect crystals could be grown. The impact of using
such small beams on mitigating radiation damage of samples will be
discussed from first principles to experimental verification. Challenges
in producing and using such small beams, and working with very tiny
crystals will be explored, including experimental methods that may require
development.

Laboratory. On the evening of July 22, an informal reception at the
Brookhaven Center will encourage registration and first contacts. The
workshop will convene in earnest on Thursday, July 23, and continue
through midday Friday with sessions and several discussions. The Thursday
evening dinner will feature an after dinner talk that is part of the
workshop program and provide opportunities for more in-depth and personal
discussions.

The workshop agenda is focused on invited speakers and discussions.
However, we welcome relevant poster contributions. Poster boards will be
available outside the meeting auditorium during all coffee breaks. We will
post abstracts of contributions as well as 8.5 by 11" sized pdf versions
of posters on this website.

Costs and Registration

Please register early using the workshop registration page. The
registration fee is a modest $75 and covers breakfast, lunch, and coffee
breaks. The cost for dinner on Thursday night - including the after dinner
talk - is $50.

I am writing to enquire about a possibility of donate XRD and XRF XRay
Tube Catalog.
My name is Grzegorz Jezierski. I am a professor at Opole University of
Technology. I have been doing industrial radiology for 30 years. I am an
autor of many scientific publications about radiology. I wrote a book
"Radiography In Industry", Warsaw 1993.
One of my hobbies is collecting Roentgen Tubes. I collect the
vintage tubes(made of the glass) and the ceramic, modern one (for
industrial radiography,dental/medical, diffraction type, fluorescence
type, microfocus X-ray tube,miniature X-ray tube). Owing to courtesy
many people and institutions I have a little collection of Roentgen
Tubes. I think to make "Museum of Roentgen Tubes" future (photos
enclosed).
I was wondering if you could send me XRD and XRF XRay Tube
Catalog as an exhibit in the Museum.

CNS problem

Hi everyone,
I am currently trying to use NMR carbon shift restraints for structure
calculation with CNS. Somehow I can't get the syntax of the input file
right. I already looked it up in the syntax manual on the cns homepage
but that didn't help much.
Maybe somebody has a file I could use as a template? Or any ideas?

Cristalografia - Crystallography:
A new web page to attract beginners to the fascinating world of
Crystallography.

Crystallography is based on fundamental and multidisciplinary
concepts,
from Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. This could explain why many
Universities do not offer any courses in Crystallography, or they
offer
only advanced courses. Physics teachers claim that teaching Bragg's
Law
or to conduct diffraction experiments in the lab is too elementary.
For
chemists and biologists Crystallography is just an analytical
technique;
they are interested more in the results and less in the fundamentals
or
in the process of structure determination. Introductory chapters of
textbooks in Solid State Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry,
Biology
and Mineralogy often include notions of Crystallography only. Thus,
teaching Crystallography seems in general to remain an unresolved
matter, especially in academic institutions, probably due to the fact
that it is erroneously considered as a minor technical issue, whose
application and interpretation is trivial.

These new pages are aimed to attract beginners to the fascinating
world
of Crystallography. Different chapters present fundamental concepts
illustrated with many figures and animations. Topics include structure
of crystals, X-rays, symmetry and lattices, scattering and diffraction
(comparing old and recent experimental developments), structural
resolution, the meaning of the structural model, computing, etc.,
without forgetting its historical context. Moreover, these web pages
are
offered in both English and Spanish, with the aim to reach the Spanish
speaking countries.

Una nueva página para atraer a principiantes hacia el fascinante mundo
de la Cristalografía.

La Cristalografía como ciencia requiere de conceptos fundamentales de
carácter muy multidisciplinar, Matemáticas, Física y Química. Y esta
puede ser la razón por la que muchas universidades no ofrecen cursos
de
Cristalografía, o sólo ofrecen cursos muy avanzados. Los profesores de
Física aseguran que enseñar la Ley de Bragg o llevar a cabo
experimentos
de difracción en los laboratorios es demasiado simplista. Y para
químicos y biólogos la Cristalografía es sólo una técnica analítica, y
en general se interesan más por los resultados que por las bases de la
misma o por el proceso de determinación estructural. Por otra parte,
los
libros de texto en Física del Estado Sólido, en Ciencia de los
Materiales, Química, Biología y Mineralogía suelen incluir tan sólo
algunas nociones de Cristalografía. Así pues, en general la enseñanza
de
Cristalografía parece seguir siendo una cuestión sin resolver,
especialmente en las instituciones académicas, probablemente debido al
hecho de que erróneamente se considera como una técnica menor, cuya
aplicación e interpretación es trivial.

Estas nuevas páginas tienen como objetivo atraer a los principiantes
al
fascinante mundo de la Cristalografía. Están presentadas en forma de
capítulos (ilustrados con muchas figuras y animaciones) que incluyen
tópicos fundamentales tales como aspectos generales sobre estructura
de
los cristales, los rayos X, la simetría y las redes, los fenómenos de
dispersión y difracción (incluyendo los desarrollos experimentales más
recientes), la resolución estructural, el significado del modelo
estructural, cálculo cristalográfico, etc., sin olvidar el contexto
histórico de todo ello. Además, con el objeto de hacerlas llegar más
fácilmente a los países de habla hispana estas páginas se ofrecen
también en español, además del inglés.

The application deadline is 8AM EST Monday 9 February for RapiData 2009,
the eleventh offering of our popular course:

Rapid Data Collection and Structure Solving at the NSLS: A Practical
Course in Macromolecular X-Ray Diffraction Measurement

The course will be held 19-24 April 2009. Students could be at any level
from advanced undergraduate to full professor. 48 students will be
accepted; 24 will bring their own specimens for data collection. Please
read the course description at http://www.px.nsls.bnl.gov/RapiData2009/.
You'll see that many experts in the field will be available for lectures
and tutorials, and you'll find the application materials at this site.

For the seventh time we will hold a short lecture course on the fundamentals of
crystallography for roughly five hours on Sunday 19 April. The body of the
RapiData course really requires that students have a healthy knowledge of
crystallography. For potential students who have some experience but are shaky
about fundamentals, this course will help. There will be a small additional fee
for the fundamentals course, to pay for Saturday night accomodations and food
on Sunday morning and noon.

Latin American Scientists: Several scholarships are available, from the
International Union of Crystallography, to pay partial travel and subsistence
costs for Latin-American students and junior faculty. Please apply for the
course, and then contact R. Sweet (sweet@...) if you are interested in
applying for a scholarship. In accordance with the standards of the
International Union of Crystallography, we observe the basic policy of
non-discrimination, affirming the right and freedom of scientists to associate
in international scientific activity without regard to such factors as
citizenship, religion, creed, political stance, ethnic origin, race, colour,
language, age, or gender, in accordance with the Statutes of the International
Council for Science. At this course no barriers will exist beyond the
application procedure that would prevent the participation of bona fide
scientists.

Mineral structures/Crystallography

As a scientist involved in crystallography i have come across a kids toy called MAGNEXT. With these units one can construct pretty cheaply octahedral and tetrahedral units, with these one can then help construct larger standard mineral structures/arrangements. For teaching this very dull subject this could be ideal?
