WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.

Alameda Co.

On Dec 18, a male TUFTED DUCK was in the NW section of Lake Merritt in Oakland.

On Dec 18, (2) GRASSHOPPER SPARROW and a VESPER SPARROW were found in the
Wilderness section of the Del Valle Trail in Sunol Regional Park. Go through
the gate to the Wilderness section, go about 1.5 to 2 miles up the steep hill
until you reach a serpentine shelf. The birds were in this area.

San Francisco Co.

On Dec 18, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen fly catching and drilling in
several trees including a Tulip Tree, just west of McLaren Lodge, at Fell
and Stanyan. It was on both sides of the paved path by a yellow pole that
sticks up at the intersection with another path. The bird was found

On Dec 17, the tan-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continues at a feeder at
513B Sumner Street in the Presidio. (Logan Kahle)

On Dec 19, a sea watch from just north of Pillar Point reported
(219) CACKLING GOOSE (all ALEUTIANS except one RIDGEWAY'S CACKLING GOOSE),

Welcome to the Birding Hotline for Interior Alaska as of December 22,
2009. A chilly Christmas Bird Count was held in Fairbanks on December
19. The notable sightings follow.

A single NORTHERN GOSHAWK was recorded for the area. The bird
was seen along the levee on the Tanana River between Peger Rd and
University Avenue.

Nine COMMON and 2 BARROW'S GOLDENEYES were seen along
the open water in the Chena River between the University Avenue Bridge
and the Carlson Center.

A total of 7 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were seen at feeder
counts in the Goldstream west, Chena Ridge, and Farmer's Loop areas.

A total of 2 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES were counted in the Fairbanks
south and Chena Ridge areas.

Two AMERICAN ROBINS were seen in the Steese and Chena Ridge
areas.

Two NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen in the Ester and Chena Ridge
areas.

A total of 5 NORTHERN THREE TOED WOODPECKERS were seen
in the Goldstream west, Ester, and Creamer's Field areas.

Nine WHITE WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen on Chena Ridge and
another 3 were recorded in Goldstream west.

Upcoming Events Include:
The Fairbanks Feeder Counts will take place on March 6. To participate,
download instructions and a datasheet from the Alaska Bird Observatory
web site at www.alaskabird.org.

Fairbanks- January 14- Preschool Nature Discovery Program-
1-2:30 PM at the Creamer's Refuge Farmhouse. The theme will be
Owls in Winter. Pre-registration is required by calling 452-5162,
and there is a $3 fee per child.

Fairbanks- January 16- Winter Nature Walk and Track
Casting program- The walk begins at 1:30 at the Creamer's
Refuge Farmhouse.

This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for
December 21, 2009, sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological

ChW reported that GREAT EGRETS have been color banded with red

In Bernalillo County:
JP on December 9 at the Alameda Bridge found seven adult
CALIFORNIA GULLS. On December 13 he had 375 RING-BILLED, 11 adult
CALIFORNIA, and three HERRING GULLS. CR and SD birded there on
December 13 and saw one CaLIFORNIA and four HERRINGS. There was an
odd hybrid duck originally seen by LN that may be a GADWALL X
PINTAIL downstream from the bridge. A SWAMP SPARROW was on the
island south of the walking bridge.
AL on December 16 again saw the PEREGRINE that has been along
San Antonio just west of Louisiana and later on San Pedro.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque on December 9 BG
saw a SNOW GOOSE, an all white CACKLING GOOSE, and an immature
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. DP on December 7 had a PEREGRINE at the ditch
behind the center.
DH again saw two PINE GROSBEAKS on December 14 at the 10K
Trailhead on the road to the Crest of the Sandia Mts.
The SNC team is banding ROSY FINCHES on Sundays at the Crest
House. On December 20 they banded four BROWN-CAPPED and two
BLACKS from a flock of 75. They will not band again until January
10.

In Chaves County:
JSa on the Bitter Lake Refuge near Roswell on the November 19
count recorded an increase of 5192 light geese, 20,050 CRANES
(less), and one RED-BREASTED MERGANSER.
.
In Colfax County:
JP, JO, and WW on December 4 said the ponds of the Maxwell
Refuge were frozen with the BARROW’S GOLDENEYE in a small open
patch on adjacent Stubblefield Lake with a COMMON LOON. A NORTHERN
SHRIKE immature was at Lake 13.
The two GOLDEN EAGLES seen in winter south of Maxwell were there
on December 1 for BW and JNM.

In Curry County:
JP and WW on December 18 at the Clovis Sewage Ponds had an
immature male EURASIAN WIGEON, 200 SNOW GEESE, some CACKLING GEESE,
and a blue morph ROSS’S GOOSE.
At Ned Houk Park north of Clovis there was four EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.
JLo at his home in southeast Curry Co. had on December 7 a
BOBWHITE covey with a lone SCALED QUAIL, SISKINS, AMERICAN
GOLDFINCH, a CURVE-BILLED THRASHER, HOUSE WREN,and a PRAIRIE
FALCON.

In DeBaca County;
JP and WW on December 18 below the dam at Sumner Lake near Fort
Sumner had a BROWN THRASHER and a MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE.

In Doña Ana County:
At Mesilla Park on December 18 DG saw a PRAIRIE FALCON, a few
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, SISKINS, INCA DOVES, and four SCRUB JAYS.
DG at his Las Cruces home on December 18 reported four SCRUB
JAYS, 14 INCA DOVES, and 53 LESSER GOLDFINCHES with a LARK BUNTING
on December 15.
At their home near Radium Springs JZ and MS had a HERMIT THRUSH
that has been present for over a month and may winter. On December
5 JZ reported ten EASTERN BLUEBIRDS. On December 14 there were two
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, ten WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, and the thrush.
JZ reported on December 4 that little was at the Uvas Valley
playa west of Hatch with an immature GOLDEN EAGLE along NM 185.

In Eddy County:
CR reported a apparent LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Brantley Lake
north of Carlsbad on December 20.

In Harding County:
JP and WW at the Ute Creek Crossing on December 12 had a
PYRRHULOXIA. At a ranch just east of the creek and north of the
bridge, they found three CARDINALS, a DOWNY WOODPECKER, and a
CURVE-BILLED THRASHER.

In Hidalgo County:
RSh on Fuller Road in the northern part of the county found the
SAGE SPARROWS were still present on December 5. SANDHILL CRANES
have been along the Gila River near Virden through December 6.
County Hwy.1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch.
Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must NOT go off the
road.

In Luna County:
DH at the Mountain View Cemetery in Deming on December 5 saw two
RED CROSSBILLS and a BRIDLED TITMOUSE.
At Pancho Villa State Park near Columbus DH did not find the
LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCHES on December 6, but saw two BARN OWLS and
four LONG-EARED OWLS.

In McKinley County:
JD and CV had a male LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCH at their home four
miles from Window Rock at 7000 feet. On December 20 there was a
female or immature present.
.
In Mora County;
BW and JNM on December 1 had at a ranch pond on NM 161 near
Watrous’s exit 364 two WHITE-FRONTED GEESE with a NORTHERN SHRIKE
at mile marker 16 further west on 161.
.
In Otero County:
DG at the Holloman Lakes on December 15 had six females and a
male COMMON GOLDENEYE, six REDHEADS, three GREATER YELLOWLEGS, up
to 35 LEAST SANDPIPERS, a CRISSAL THRASHER, and three SAGE
SPARROWS.
On the drive between the White Sands Missile Range and the lakes
DG had 25 RED-TAILED, a FERRUGINOUS HAWKS, GOLDEN EAGLE, PRAIRIE
FALCON, and an Oryx.
DG contacted the biologist at Holloman AFB on the Holloman
closures. There is a beetle infestation at Lagoon G that they are
trying to rid. One can walk past the gate to Stinky Lake, but not
drive in and can still bird there. Contact David Griffin at 575-

In Quay County:
JP and WW on December 12 at Ute Lake State Park near Logan had
four COMMON LOONS, a male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, and a SWAMP
SPARROW.

In Rio Arriba County:
BF and SF for the Española CBC on December 20 reported a winter
male LONG-TAILED DUCK, an immature Greenland race WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE, and CACKLING GEESE with a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS at the
Ohkay Owingeh Lake north of town; with a ROSS’S GOOSE at the Big
Rock Casino pond; at the Big Mac marsh in town a VIRGINIA RAIL,
three BALD EAGLES along the Rio Grande, and a Rufous RED-TAILED
HAWK at the marsh. Also there was two CURVE-BILLED THRASHERS along
Prince Drive and a WILLIAMSON’S SAPSUCKER at La Mesilla.
AT on December 5 and 6 near San Antonio Peak north of Tres
Piedras saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE, a BLACK and ten BROWN-CAPPED ROSY
FINCHES, five GOLDEN and one BALD EAGLES, and three ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS.

In San Miguel County:
BH on December 15 at the Las Vegas Refuge had nine TUNDRA SWANS
On Crane Lake, TREE SPARROWS along the hwy. to the lake, and a
NORTHERN SHRIKE on the road east of McAllister Lake. An immature
male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was with a red-wing flock on the road
beyond the lake. That road has piled snow and can be muddy, which
makes it almost impossible to drive. Been there, done that.
At Conchas Lake Park JP and WW on December 12 had an immature
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at the old residence with one COMMON LOON.
SF on December 18 at Conchas Lake had two HORNED GREBES, eight
PACIFIC LOONS, and ten male and three female RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS.
JA reported on December 3 that KB had a FOX SPARROW at her home
in Montezuma. Her phone number to see it is 505-454-1504. She
also had a LINCOLN’S SPARROW and two CASSIN’S FINCHES.

In Sandoval County:
BH reported on December 9 at Cochiti Lake 250 LESSER SCAUPS, 24
COMMON GOLDENEYES, 175 COMMON MERGANSERS, three DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS, four adult CALIFORNIA GULLS and four BONAPARTE’S GULLS.
JP reported the lake was quiet on December 19.

In Santa Fe County:
RE on December 16 had two pair of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on the
way to the Santa Fe Ski Basin on the Aspen Vista Trail. The trail
is icy, with two feet of snow at five miles. One was singing. JP
and WW on December 19 did not hike the trail. At the ski basin
there was several GRAY JAYS, NUTCRACKERS, and a PINE GROSBEAK below
the basin on the way to Aspen Vista.
JB and AF on December 13 at Cerrillos had two EASTERN BLUEBIRDS
and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. There was a huge STARLING flock at
La Cienega south of Santa Fe.

In Sierra County:
On December 17 DC along the Rio Grande two miles north of the
now dry Las Palomas Marsh on a deeply rutted track had a RUSTY
BLACKBIRD. He marked the spot with red flagging.
DC on December 16 on FR 157 eight miles north of NM 152 had an
OLIVE WARBLER.
On December 5 JP, JO, and WW saw two immature TUNDRA SWANS at
South Highland and later at South Monticello Point.
At the Rock Canyon Marina of the lake JP, JO, and WW on December
5 had the adult CALIFORNIA and two adult HERRING GULLS.
At the Paseo del Rio Park below the Elephant Butte Dam TB on
November 30 reported the MOORHEN at the holding pond, one
BRIDLED TITMOUSE, and a pair of MEXICAN MALLARDS near the bridge.
DC on December 15 saw an OSPREY, two BROWN CREEPERS, and the
titmouse.
At Percha Dam Park JP, JO, and WW on December 5 found six
MOORHENS, two SWAMP SPARROWS, an EASTERN PHOEBE, YELLOWTHROAT, and
up to three BRIDLED TITMICE. DH had an OSPREY on December 6.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge south of San Antonio CKB on November
23 had the GOLDEN-CROWNED and HARRIS’S SPARROWS from the head-
quarters window feeders, the banded APLOMADO FALCON immature near
stop 4, with the Harris’s plus a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the
Cactus Garden on November 28. DH on December 5 had the Golden-
crowned and an EASTERN PHOEBE on the east side of the Marsh Loop.
On December 3 TW had the WHITE-TAILED KITE again on the refuge
along the Marsh Loop (photos). CR on December 12 at the refuge saw
the GOLDEN-CROWNED with DG and MR, but not the Harris’s; and three
CACKLING GEESE at the south end. He reported that CS on December 9
found four TUNDRA SWANS and the Kite.

In Union County:
DW on December 7 reported a male HOODED MERGANSER at Clayton
Lake with 12 CACKLING GEESE and an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE on a fence
north of Clayton.
BH on the Clayton CBC on December 16 reported 10,000 CANADA/
CACKLING GEESE, , mostly Cackling, with five WHITE-FRONTED GEESE
at Clayton Lake, plus a HOUSE WREN. A CASSIN’S FINCH was along
Seneca Creek upstream from the lake.

BG had a WHITE-FACED IBIS at the marsh behind the Taco Bell in
Belen on December 12.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD was feeding from the reeds at the back of Crespi Pond today. The "mystery Goose" on the pond is a ROSS'S GOOSE. [Don Roberson]

193 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen flying over the Carmel River this morning. A ROSS'S goose was included in the flock. A male REDHEAD was on the Odello area of the lagoon visible from Cross Hill. A PALM WARBLER was also reported in the area. [Don Roberson]

This is the Santa Barbara County rare bird report being posted on Saturday,
December 19, 2009 at 7:00 a.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
please post it to sbcobirding@.... The rare bird alert number
for Santa Barbara is no longer in service.

An EASTERN PHOEBE has been seen pretty regularly in the fennel along Storke
Road from Whittier Drive south to the married student housing complex.

Between Campus Point and the large parking lot for the Marine Sciences
building at UCSB, look offshore for all 3 species of scoter including
several BLACK SCOTERS and a couple of WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. A LONG-TAILED
DUCK has also been seen in this area. A RED KNOT has been seen by the
bathrooms just east of the point. Devereux Slough has drained and is better
for shorebirds than ducks. A TROPICAL KINGBIRD has been around in this area
by the Cliff House.

At Goleta Beach Park, look for one or two ELEGANT TERNS.

Another LONG-TAILED DUCK and several HOODED MERGANSERS have been seen in the
broad section of Tecolotito Creek just south of Hollister Avenue where the
creek enters the Santa Barbara Airport property.

Accessed from the end of Coronado Road in Goleta, look for GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLETS, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES, WINTER WREN and a BROWN CREEPER
farther east in the eucalyptus grove after the dry creek crossing.

The GRACE'S WARBLER continues at the Bella Vista Open Space in west Goleta.

At Lake Los Carneros, a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER continues in the row of pines
closest to Los Carneros Road on the west side of the lake. An AMERICAN
BITTERN, LEAST BITTERN, and COMMON MOORHEN were also seen on or around the
lake.

Look in the pines at the intersection of Cambridge and Via Salerno for
MOUNTAIN CHICKADEES and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.

The West Mesa area of San Marcos Foothills had 9 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS and 2
Rock Wrens.

2 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were in Orpet Park near the intersection of APS
and Pedregosa Street.

Highlights from Lake Cachuma include AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, several BALD
EAGLES, WOOD DUCKS, HOODED MERGANSERS and CACKLING GEESE.

FERRUGINOUS HAWKS have returned to the Torrey Pine roost tree in Lompoc at
the corner of East Olive and South C Streets

A YELLOW-BELLIED and a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER are ranging widely in Preisker
Park at the north end of Santa Maria. An EASTERN PHOEBE was found at nearby
River Oaks Park.

A SNOW GOOSE, a ROSS'S GOOSE and 2 CACKLING GEESE continue at Waller Park in
Santa Maria.

TUCSON

The *SHORT-TAILED HAWK continued to be seen near the intersection of
Ridgeway Rd and Seneca St (which is, in turn, southwest of the bigger
intersection of Grant Rd and Wilmot Rd) throughout the week (m. obs).

The *RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER continued at McCormick Park through at least
12/15 (John Yerger). This park is found on the east side of Columbus
Blvd between Glenn Rd and Fort Lowell Rd; an aerial image of the exact
tree in which the bird is sometimes seen can be found here:
http://tinyurl.com/ybastun. On 12/15, the bird landed in a tall skinny
palm tree at the SW corner of pavilion #4 (by the YMCA).

A first winter #GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was seen on the south side of the
Rillito River between 1st Ave and Stone Ave on 12/13 (Scott Olmstead).

A NORTHERN PARULA continued to be seen along the path behind the
Hardesty Building (NW corner of 22nd St and Alvernon Way) through at
least 12/17 (m. obs). A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was reported in nearby
Reid Park on 12/13, along the south side of the zoo by the soccer fields
(Mary Klinkel).

A LEWIS'S WOODPECKER continued near the Pecan Grove at 8750 Woodland Rd
in northeast Tucson on 12/13 (Peter Salomon). A rare low-elevation
YELLOW-EYED JUNCO continued in the area as well (Keith Graves).

A female COMMON GOLDENEYE continued at Lakeside Park on 12/10 (Robert
Payne). A male COMMON GOLDENEYE was seen at the Arthur Pack Golf Course
pond through at least 12/14 (Philip Kline).

Two HOODED MERGANSERS were seen on 12/16 at Sweetwater Wetlands, in
Willow Pond (Peter Yingling).

TUMACACORI

A *ROSE-THROATED BECARD continues to be reported sporadically, just
downstream (north) of Santa Gertrudis Lane by about 0.25 mile, in the
vicinity of a small clearing marked by an old refrigerator (m. obs). A
male #RUDDY GROUND-DOVE was seen about 100 meters north of the lane
along the river on 12/16 (Scott Olmstead). A PAINTED REDSTART on 12/13
was notable as well (Peggy Wang).

A #RUFOUS-BACKED ROBIN and at least one #VARIED THRUSH both continued to
be seen in the Pyracantha bush opposite the driveway of house #12 on
Santa Gertrudis Lane this week (m. obs). NOTE: this is a private lane,
but birders are currently welcome to park along the I-19 Frontage Rd
just outside the lane's entrance and walk in. Please respect private
property.

SULPHUR SPRINGS VALLEY

Four *CACKLING GEESE were reported at Whitewater Draw WMA on 12/13, near
the eastern shore of the main pool (Michael Turisk). A #GREATER SCAUP
was also reported.

PATAGONIA

A *"RED" FOX SPARROW was photographed at the Patagonia-Sonoita Creek
Preserve on 12/13 (Chris Rasmussen). The bird was across the creek (and
upstream a little) from the end of the small stream-side spur at the
Creek Trail-end of the fire-break that runs through the middle of the
Preserve.

SAN PEDRO RIVER (San Pedro House)

A #LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was seen again along the San Pedro River on
12/16, near trail marker #7, accessed from the San Pedro House (Rick and
Ricki Thompson).

SANTA CRUZ FLATS

Two #RUDDY GROUND-DOVES were seen along the irrigation ditch on the west
side of Picacho Hwy just north of Baumgartner Rd on 12/11 (Mark
Stevenson, Molly Pollock). Just north of this intersection, an
astounding number of Crested Caracaras have been observed - 40+
individuals! A LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was also observed along Baumgartner
where it crosses the dry wash of the Santa Cruz River about 1/3 mile W
of Wheeler.

A single AMERICAN CROW was present at the southeast corner of the Marana
Pecan Grove on 12/12 (Rick Wright). It continued through at least
12/14; 3 individuals were reported on 12/15.

SANTA RITA MOUNTAINS

A pair of #BLACK-CAPPED GNATCATCHERS was seen on the trail just upstream
of Proctor Road (lower Madera Canyon) on 12/10 (Stuart Healy). At that
time they were on the hillside near the first bridge above the bat houses.

WILLCOX

A single female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was reported with Common
Mergansers at Willcox Twin Lakes on 12/10 (John Saba). 2 CALIFORNIA
GULLs were reported as well; 4 were seen on 12/14.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

SIERRA VISTA - Construction continues on State Route 92 on the east side
of the Huachuca Mountains. Be prepared for delays.

FORT HUACHUCA - will suspend your driving privileges on Post for 30
days, on your first offense for talking or using a cell phone/Blackberry
while driving. You MUST use a hands free device.

SANTA CRUZ FLATS: Managers at the Evergreen Turf Farm (vicinity of
Tweedy and Pretzer Rds) have requested that anyone birding there on the
weekends please leave by 5:00 PM. This is due to security issues
experienced by the Sod Farm. Birders are still welcome here at other times.

BAIRD'S SPARROW HILL AND THE VACA RANCH CORRAL in the San Rafael Valley
is off limits to birders due to the thoughtless actions of a few
birders. DO NOT ENTER THE PROPERTY. While not currently present, a sign
has been posted previously stating that "stopping within 0.25 mile of
the corral is prohibited."

WASTEWATER TREATMENT FACILITIES: Please read the "Announcements" section
listed at the bottom of the following website for the latest updates on
closures and access to selected Wastewater Reclamation Facilities in

This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, December 17.

Eight GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE continue at the reservior at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas. They were last reported on December 11.

An immature TUNDRA SWAN was found on December 16 in South El Monte. The bird was first seen along the Rio Hondo north of Rush Street, but then moved to the Legg Lake area. It was then seen repeatedly at the north lake at Legg Lake. On December 17, the bird was near the San Gabriel River channel, just west of the bike path and north of the Whittier Narrows Dam. This location is between Siphon Road and the dam.

Three other swans (likely TUNDRA SWANS) were seen flying over Claremont on December 13.

Three adult male and one female/immature BLACK SCOTER and and two female/immature WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS continue at Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo. Look for the birds between the RV Park south of Imperial north to lifeguard tower number 55. Parking is available at the parking area at Imperial Highway and Grand Ave. and also on Vista del Mar south of Imperial Highway.

Another BLACK SCOTER was at Alamitos Bay in Long Beach on December 13. It was seen from the end of 68th Place, north of Ocean Blvd.

A COMMON GOLDENEYE was at Del Rey Lagoon in Playa del Rey on December 13.

A WOOD STORK was found at Legg Lake in South El Monte on December 12. It was reported through December 17. It has most often been seen on the large island on the south lake, but it moves around the area and may be seen anywhere in the vicinity of the three lakes. Legg Lake is bordered by the 60 Freeway, Rosemead Blvd. and Santa Anita Avenue. Free parking is on the east side of Rosemead and the west side of Santa Anita.

Also at Legg Lake on December 17 was an AMERICAN BITTERN. This bird was at the middle lake on the west island.

A BALD EAGLE was in Claremont on December 12 (possibly the same bird that has been seen at Bonelli Park in San Dimas). Another BALD EAGLE, this one a sub-adult, was seen at Bonelli Park perched along Raging Waters Drive on December 11.

The RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles continued through December 16. It is frequently seen in a carob tree in the northwest corner of the property. These condominiums are on the south side of Rodeo Road at Cloverdale. For easiest access to the NW section you can park along Hauser.

Another RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was at Kenneth Hahn Park in a eucalyptus north of restroom #6 on December 12.

The adult YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at Lindberg Park in Culver City through December 16. It is often opposite 10963 Ocean Drive, but also moves around the area.

The adult male WILLIAMSON’S SAPSUCKER at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar was reported through December 14. Look for it in pines around the children’s play area.

The PAINTED REDSTART continues in Monrovia Canyon, usually near the Nature Center. It was reported through December 13.

Very late was a BLUE GROSBEAK at the Rio Hondo Basin on December 14. This bird was seen from Lincoln Ave. just north of the dam. The area has recently been flooded, pushing many birds up and out of the basin.

Two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were at Placerita Canyon on December 14. They were seen near the picnic area and Nature Center.

VENTURA COUNTY—

The RED-NECKED GREBE continues at the Ventura Marina and channel. Try spotting it from the end of Spinnaker Drive. Also here was a BLACK SKIMMER on December 13.

A sub-adult BALD EAGLE was at Lake Casitas on December 10. It was seen flying over the marina.

LEWIS’S WOODPECKERS continue on Canada Larga Road. Two were seen in walnut trees by the mile 3 marker on December 13.

A SAGE THRASHER continues along Casper Road on the Oxnard Plain. It has been on the west side of Casper near where the road ends by the gun club.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continues at Camino Real Park in Ventura. It was last reported on December 13. It was in ash trees between the 126 Freeway and the dog park. A NASHVILLE WARBLER was also seen in the barranca at Camino Real.

A juvenile BALD EAGLE was seen at Glen Helen Regional Park on Dec 10

A male VERMILION FLYCATCHER continued at Cal State San Bernardino on Dec
13 (Tom Benson).

Twelve MOUNTAIN PLOVERS were seen in an agricultural field in El Mirage
on Dec 15 (Stan Gray).

A CACKLING GOOSE and 5 SNOW GEESE were seen a Jess Ranch Lakes on Dec 16
(John Breckenridge).

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

The following birds were seen at the north end of the Salton Sea on Dec
11: a COMMON LOON and 20 COMMON MERGANSERS at 85th Avenue, a RED-NAPED
SAPSUCKER at Mecca Lands duck club, and 2 GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS at 84th
Avenue (Chet McGaugh).

IMPERIAL COUNTY

A NORTHERN PARULA was seen at Wister Unit on Dec 8 and a WHITE-WINGED
SCOTER was seen at Rock Hill on Dec 10 (John Kelly).

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains,
where it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in
Riverside in July, may be common there in December.

In Bernalillo County:
JP on December 9 at the Alameda Bridge found three HERRING GULLS
and seven adult CALIFORNIA GULLS. On December 13 he had 375 RING-
BILLED, 11 adult CALIFORNIA, and three HERRING GULLS. CR and SD
birded there on December 13 and saw one CaLIFORNIA and four
HERRINGS. There was an odd hybrid duck originally seen by LN that
may be a GADWALL X PINTAIL downstream from the bridge. A SWAMP
SPARROW was on the island south of the walking bridge.
AL on December 16 agaom saw the PEREGRINE that has been along
San Antonio just west of Louisiana and later on San Pedro.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque on December 9 BG
saw a SNOW GOOSE, an all white CACKLING GOOSE, and an immature
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. DP on December 7 had a PEREGRINE at the ditch
behind the center.
DH again saw two PINE GROSBEAKS on December 14 at the 10K
Trailhead on the road to the Crest of the Sandia Mts.
The SNC team is banding ROSY FINCHES on Sundays at the Crest
House. On December 13 they banded 11 BROWN-CAPPED, eight BLACKS,
and two GRAY-CROWNED. The road up was mostly clear.

In Chaves County:
JSa on the Bitter Lake Refuge near Roswell on the November 19
count recorded an increase of 5192 light geese, 20,050 CRANES
(less), and one RED-BREASTED MERGANSER.
.
In Colfax County:
JP, JO, and WW on December 4 said the ponds of the Maxwell
Refuge were frozen with the BARROW’S GOLDENEYE in a small open
patch on adjacent Stubblefield Lake with a COMMON LOON. A NORTHERN
SHRIKE immature was at Lake 13.
The two GOLDEN EAGLES seen in winter south of Maxwell were there
on December 1 for BW and JNM.

In Curry County:
JLo at his home in southeast Curry Co. had on December 1 a BARN
OWL family in an old building. On December 7 he had a BOBWHITE
covey with a lone SCALED QUAIL, SISKINS, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, a
CURVE-BILLED THRASHER, HOUSE WREN,and a PRAIRIE FALCON.

In Doña Ana County:
At their home near Radium Springs JZ and MS had a HERMIT THRUSH
that has been present for a month and may winter. On December 5 JZ
reported ten EASTERN and several WESTERN BLUEBIRDS. On December 14
there were two GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, ten WESTERN BLUEBIRDS , and
the thrush.
JZ reported on December 4 that little was at the Uvas Valley
playa west of Hatch with an immature GOLDEN EAGLE along NM 185.

In Harding County:
JP and WW at the Ute Creek Crossing on December 12 had a
PYRRHULOXIA. At a ranch just east of the creek and north of the
bridge, they found three CARDINALS, a DOWNY WOODPECKER, and a
CURVE-BILLED THRASHER.
.
In Hidalgo County:
RSh on Fuller Road in the northern part of the county found the
SAGE SPARROWS were still present on December 5. SANDHILL CRANES
have been along the Gila River near Virden through December 6.
County Hwy.1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch.
Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must NOT go off the
road.

In Luna County:
DH at the Mountain View Cemetery in Deming on December 5 saw two
RED CROSSBILLS and a BRIDLED TITMOUSE.
At Pancho Villa State Park near Columbus DH did not find the
LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCHES on December 6, but saw two BARN OWLS and
four LONG-EARED OWLS.

In Mora County;
BW and JNM on December 1 had at a ranch pond on NM 161 near
Watrous’s exit 364 two WHITE-FRONTED GEESE with a NORTHERN SHRIKE
at mile marker 16 further west on 161.
.
In Otero County:
DG contacted the biologist at Holloman AFB on the Holloman
closures. There is a beetle infestation at Lagoon G that they are
trying to rid. One can walk past the gate to Stinky Lake, but not
drive in and can still bird there. Contact David Griffin at 575-
32-200 for more details.

In Quay County:
JP and WW on December 12 at Ute Lake State Park near Logan had
four COMMON LOONS, a male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, and a SWAMP
SPARROW.

In Rio Arriba County:
AT on December 5 and 6 near San Antonio Peak north of Tres
Piedras saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE, a BLACK and ten BROWN-CAPPED ROSY
FINCHES, five GOLDEN and one BALD EAGLES, and three ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS.

In San Miguel County:
BH on December 15 at the Las Vegas Refuge had nine TUNDRA SWANS
On Crane Lake, TREE SPARROWS along the hwy. to the lake, and a
NORTHERN SHRIKE on the road east of McAllister Lake. An immature
male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was with a red-wing flock on the road
beyond the lake. That road has piled snow and can be muddy, which
makes it almost impossible to Drive. Been there, done that.
At Conchas Lake Park JP and WW on December 12 had an immature
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at the old residence with one COMMON LOON.
JA reported on December 3 that KB had a FOX SPARROW at her home
in Montezuma. Her phone number to see it is 505-454-1504. She
also had a LINCOLN’S SPARROW and two CASSIN’S FINCHES.

In Sandoval County:
BH reported on December 9 at Cochiti Lake 250 LESSER SCAUPS, 24
COMMON GOLDENEYES, 175 COMMON MERGANSERS, three DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS, four adult CALIFORNIA GULLS and four BONAPARTE’S GULLS.

In Santa Fe County:
RE on December 16 had two pair of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on the
way to the Santa Fe Ski Basin on the Aspen Vista Trail. The trail
is icy, with two feet of snow at five miles. One was singing.

In Sierra County:
On December 5 JP, JO, and WW saw two immature TUNDRA SWANS at
South Highland and later at South Monticello Point.
At the Rock Canyon Marina of the lake JP, JO, and WW on December
5 had the adult CALIFORNIA and two adult HERRING GULLS.
At the Paseo del Rio Park below the Elephant Butte Dam TB on
November 30 reported the MOORHEN at the holding pond, one
BRIDLED TITMOUSE, and a pair of MEXICAN MALLARDS near the bridge.
JP, JO, and WW on December 5 saw a BROWN CREEPER and the titmouse.
At Percha Dam Park JP, JO, and WW on December 5 found six
MOORHENS, two SWAMP SPARROWS, an EASTERN PHOEBE, YELLOWTHROAT, and
up to three BRIDLED TITMICE. DH had an OSPREY on December 6.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge south of San Antonio CKB on November
23 had the GOLDEN-CROWNED and HARRIS’S SPARROWS from the head-
quarters window feeders, the banded APLOMADO FALCON immature near
stop 4, with the Harris’s plus a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the
Cactus Garden on November 28. JP said that others on December 5
had a red FOX SPARROW. DH on December 5 had the Golden-crowned and
an EASTERN PHOEBE on the east side of the Marsh Loop. On December
3 TW had the WHITE-TAILED KITE again on the refuge along the Marsh
Loop (photos). CR on December 12 at the refuge saw the GOLDEN-
CROWNED, but not the Harris’s; and three CACKLING GEESE at the
south end. He reported that CS on December 9 found four TUNDRA
SWANS and the Kite.

In Union County:
DW on December 7 reported a male HOODED MERGANSER at Clayton
Lake with 12 CACKLING GEESE and an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE on a fence
north of Clayton.
BH on the Clayton CBC on December 16 reported 10,000 CANADA/
CACKLING GEESEM, mostly Cackling, with five WHITE-FRONTED GEESE
at Clayton Lake, plus a HOUSE WREN. A CASSIN’S FINCH was along
Seneca Creek upstream from the lake.

In Valencia County:
BG had a WHITE-FACED IBIS at the marsh behind the Taco Bell in
Belen on December 12.

seeds on the street near 15 Lighthouse at the Canada Cove trailer park,
off of Miramontes Road in Half Moon Bay. A female ORCHARD ORIOLE
was seen on Filbert Street between First and Second Street.

1 mile up Sonoma Mountain Road from Adobe Road in Petaluma. At Shollenberger
Park, a PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was spotted, At the Ellis Creek Water Treatment
area on Cypress Street, a male and female BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen.

There were no reports this last week of the BAR-TAILED GODWIT at Upper
Newport Bay. The bird has frequented, at low tide, the area around the
outlet of San Diego Creek below the Jamboree Street crossing. We want to
keep track of sightings of this bird and its condition (the bird has
developed a limp), so keep them coming.

EURASIAN WIGEON: One reported from Bolsa Chica Preserve (10th, 14th), and
one along Cabot north of Crown Valley (13th).

SNOW GOOSE: Monarch Beach Golf Links (13th).

RED-NECKED GREBE: (15th, 16th) Dana Point Harbor.... seen today off of
Puerto Place in channel with boat launching ramp.

CASSINS VIREO: Fairhaven Memorial Park (15th)

YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER: Mile Square Park in pines near a bathroom and
playground (10th, 14th) and a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE close to Edinger.

MERLIN: possibly one of the rarer races ("suckleyi") at Santiago Park in
Santa Ana (14th)

REDDISH EGRETS: 4 at Bolsa Chica as well as two AMERICAN BITTERN (14th).

GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE: Along Santa Ana River bike path between Gisler and
Adams in Costa Mesa near white monument stand that lacks a plaque (13th).

ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on private property in Lemon Heights and a
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH (13th).

NORTHERN FULMAR: (12th) off of Headlands, Dana Point (and one dead bird
found on Strand Beach, Dana Point, on the 15th.

VERMILION FLYCATCHER: along bike path next to Shady Canyon, east of Bonito
Canyon in grassy area near bridge across the bottom of Bommer Canyon.

WHITE-WINGED SCOTER: (10th) off of Balboa Pier.

This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for

In Bernalillo County:
JP on December 9 at the Alameda Bridge found three HERRING GULLS
and seven adult CALIFORNIA GULLS. On December 13 he had 375 RING-BILLED,
11 adult CALIFORNIA, and three HERRING GULLS. CR and SD
birded there on December 13 and one CaLIFORNIA and four HERRINGS.
There was an odd hybrid duck originally seen by LN that may be a
GADWALL X PINTAIL downstream from the bridge. A SWAMP SPARROW was
on the island south of the walking bridge.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque on December 9 BG
saw a SNOW GOOSE, an all white CACKLING GOOSE, and an immature
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. DP on December 7 had a PEREGRINE at the ditch
behind the center.
AL saw a PEREGRINE on December 4 just west of Louisiana; and
.JSt on December 5 still had it along San Antonio west of San
Pedro.
The SNC team is banding ROSY FINCHES on Sundays at the Crest
House. On December 13 they banded 11 BROWN-CAPPED, eight BLACKS,
and two GRAY-CROWNED. The road up was mostly clear.
.
In Chaves County:
JSa on the Bitter Lake Refuge near Roswell on the November 19
count recorded an increase of 5192 light geese, 20,050 CRANES
(less), and one RED-BREASTED MERGANSER.
.
In Colfax County:
JP, JO, and WW on December 4 said the ponds of the Maxwell
Refuge were frozen with the BARROW’S GOLDENEYE in a small open
patch on adjacent Stubblefield Lake with a COMMON LOON. A NORTHERN
SHRIKE immature was at Lake 13. On Stubblefield BW and JNM on
December 1 saw a male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE.
The two GOLDEN EAGLES seen in winter south of Maxwell were there
on December 1 for BW and JNM.

In Curry County:
JLo at his home in southeast Curry Co. had on December 1 a BARN
OWL family in an old building. On December 7 he had a BOBWHITE
covey with a lone SCALED QUAIL, SISKINS, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, a
CURVE-BILLED THRASHER, HOUSE WREN,and a PRAIRIE FALCON.

In Doña Ana County:
At their home near Radium Springs JZ and MS had a HERMIT THRUSH
that has been present for a month and may winter. On December 5 JZ
reported ten EASTERN and several WESTERN BLUEBIRDS and the thrush.
JZ reported on December 4 that little was at the Uvas Valley
playa west of Hatch with an immature GOLDEN EAGLE along NM 185.
SMc on December 5 had a PRAIRIE FALCON at his home just west of
Organ (east of Las Cruces).

In Harding County:
JP and WW at the Ute Creek Crossing on December 12 had a
PYRRHULOXIA. At a ranch just east of the creek and north of the
bridge, they found three CARDINALS, a DOWNY WOODPECKER, and a
CURVE-BILLED THRASHER.
.
In Hidalgo County:
RSh on Fuller Road in the northern part of the county found the
SAGE SPARROWS were still present on December 5. SANDHILL CRANES
have been along the Gila River near Virden through December 6.
County Hwy.1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch.
Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must NOT go off the
road.

In Luna County:
DH at the Mountain View Cemetery in Deming on December 5 saw two
RED CROSSBILLS and a BRIDLED TITMOUSE.
At Pancho Villa State Park near Columbus DH did not find the
LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCHES on December 6, but saw two BARN OWLS and
four LONG-EARED OWLS.

In Mora County;
BW
and JNM on December 1 had at a ranch pond on NM 161 near Watrous’s
exit 364 two WHITE-FRONTED GEESE with a NORTHERN SHRIKE at mile
marker 16 further west on 161.
.
In Otero County:
DG contacted the biologist at Holloman AFB on the Holloman
closures. There is a beetle infestation at Lagoon G that they are
trying to rid. One can walk past the gate to Stinky Lake, but not
drive in and can still bird there. Contact David Griffin at 575-
32-200 for more details.

In Quay County:
JP and WW on December 12 at Ute Lake State Park near Logan had
four COMMON LOONS, a male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, and a SWAMP
SPARROW.
.
In Rio Arriba County:
AT on December 5 and 6 near San Antonio Peak north of Tres
Piedras saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE, a BLACK and ten BROWN-CAPPED ROSY
FINCHES, five GOLDEN and one BALD EAGLES, and three ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS.

In San Miguel County:
At Conchas Lake Park JP and WW on December 12 had an immature
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at the old residence with one COMMON LOON.
JA reported on December 3 that KB had a FOX SPARROW at her home
in Montezuma. Her phone number to see it is 505-454-1504. She
also had a LINCOLN’S SPARROW and two CASSIN’S FINCHES.

In Sandoval County:
BH reported on December 9 at Cochiti Lake 250 LESSER SCAUPS, 24
COMMON GOLDENEYES, 175 COMMON MERGANSERS, three DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS, four adult CALIFORNIA GULLS and four BONAPARTE’S GULLS.
JMc on December 5 reported at his Placitas home north of
Albuquerque AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, SISKINS, CURVE-BILLED THRASHER, and
SCALED QUAIL.

In Santa Fe County:
DS on December 6 had a male EVENING GROSBEAK in Tesuque north of
Santa Fe.
.
In Sierra County:
On December 5 JP, JO, and WW saw two immature TUNDRA SWANS at
South Highland and later at South Monticello Point.
At the Rock Canyon Marina of the lake JP, JO, and WW on December
5 had the adult CALIFORNIA and two adult HERRING GULLS.
At the Paseo del Rio Park below the Elephant Butte Dam TB on
November 30 reported the MOORHEN at the holding pond, one
BRIDLED TITMOUSE, and a pair of MEXICAN MALLARDS near the bridge.
JP, JO, and WW on December 5 saw a BROWN CREEPER and the titmouse.
At Percha Dam Park JP, JO, and WW on December 5 found six
MOORHENS, two SWAMP SPARROWS, an EASTERN PHOEBE, YELLOWTHROAT, and
up to three BRIDLED TITMICE. DH had an OSPREY on December 6.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge south of San Antonio CKB on November
23 had the GOLDEN-CROWNED and HARRIS’S SPARROWS from the head-
quarters window feeders, the banded APLOMADO FALCON immature near
stop 4, with the Harris’s plus a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the
Cactus Garden on November 28. JP said that others on December 5
had a red FOX SPARROW. DH on December 5 had the Golden-crowned and
an EASTERN PHOEBE on the east side of the Marsh Loop. On December
3 TW had the WHITE-TAILED KITE again on the refuge along the Marsh
Loop (photos). CR on December 12 at the refuge saw the GOLDEN-
CROWNED, but not the Harris’s; three CACKLING GEESE at the south
end. He reported that CS on December 9 found four TUNDRA SWAMS and
the Kite.

In Union County:
DW on December 7 reported a male HOODED MERGANSER at Clayton
Lake with 12 CACKLING GEESE and an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE on a fence
north of Clayton.

In Valencia County:
BG had a WHITE-FACED IBIS at the marsh behind the Taco Bell in
Belen on December 12.

Dec 8: the RED-NECKED GREBE seen Dec 3 on Lake Bonavista was still there; water was frozen over and the bird was rescued by CWRS, Terry Korolyk.

On Dec 10, a tan-morph WHITE-THROATED SPARROW has been coming to a feeder in

On Dec 8, (3) SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen and heard calling at the south end
of the Spaletta Plateau in Pt Reyes National Seashore. A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER
was seen along Sir Francis Drake Blvd where Barries Bay Gulch meets the road.

On Dec 10, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was in the company of juncos,
white-crowned sparrows and golden-crowned sparrows coming to a feeder in
the Presidio. The WHITE-THROATED SPARROW has been seen the last four days.

On Dec 9, a CHUKAR and BLUE-GNATCATCHER were seen on the north side of
building #6 at the VA Medical Center at 4151 Clement Street. (John Comstock)

On Dec 6, an adult male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was found on the north side
of the Arboretum, about 50 yards east of the succulent garden feeding on
thistle in a weedy patch between two paths. (Dominik Mosur)

San Mateo Co.

On Dec 10, a WESTERN FLYCATCHER type was seen at Cypress Lawn Cemetery in
Colma, in the trees and lawn along the drainage ditch near the plant nursery
by Hillside Blvd. A WARBLING VIREO was nearby as well. Woodlawn Cemetery had
(2) EURASIAN WIGEON and a HOODED MERGANSER on the pond. (Russ Bright)

On Dec 8, (3) WILSON'S SNIPE were seen in the lagoon which goes over
Hillside Blvd in San Mateo. (Chuck ?)

Sutter Co.

On Dec 6, up to 12 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS were seen on the north side of Pass
Road, 1.8 miles east of West Butte Road, actively feeding, and posing
on the fence line for great photo ops. In the same area , we had 2
adult GOLDEN EAGLES soaring low overhead. (Terry Colborn)

Tucson RBA 10 December 2009 - brief addition

Omissions were accidentally made in the Tumacacori section, concerning
Santa Gertrudis Lane; this has been feature in previous RBAs, and is not
new but definitely important information:

TUMACACORI

A *ROSE-THROATED BECARD was reported along the Santa Cruz River about
0.25 mile north of Santa Gertrudis Lane on 12/9 (James Barr).
Specifically, the bird was seen near the clearing that contains an old
refrigerator. Along the Lane itself in the pyracantha bushes, the
#RUFOUS-BACKED ROBIN and now two different #VARIED THRUSHES were
reported as well (one bright male and one female-looking bird).

NOTE: this is a private lane, but birders are currently welcome to park
along the I-19 Frontage Rd just outside the lane's entrance and walk in.
Please respect private property.

TUCSON and vicinity

The *BAY-BREASTED WARBLER was reported as continuing along Woodland Rd
on 12/7 (James Barr). It was reported in the same place as previously,
near the entrance to the property signed "Pecan Farm" at 8750 Woodland
Rd. Also here was a continuing LEWIS'S WOODPECKER.

The *SHORT-TAILED HAWK was seen near the intersection of Ridgeway Rd and
Seneca St (which is, in turn, southwest of the bigger intersection of
Grant Rd and Wilmot Rd) on 12/5 (Dave Stejskal).

The *RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER continued at McCormick Park through at least
12/7 (Jake Mohlmann, John Yerger). This park is found on the east side
of Columbus Blvd between Glenn Rd and Fort Lowell Rd; an aerial image of
the exact tree the bird was seen in can be found here:

An #EASTERN PHOEBE continued along the southern border of the Roger Road
WRF through at least 12/5 (m. obs). A female #RUDDY GROUND-DOVE also
continued here through 12/5, through it was actually spotted from across
the street at Sweetwater Wetlands (Jerry Bock).

A NORTHERN PARULA was discovered feeding along the path behind the
Hardesty Building (NW corner of 22nd St and Alvernon Way) on 12/4 (Peter
Collins). It continued through at least 12/9.

A very unseasonal BELL'S VIREO continued at Fort Lowell Park through at
least 12/5 (Mark Stevenson). It was seen at the east end of the park
near the water feature and also at the north side of the pecan grove
(just SW of the Hohokam pit house display).

Two male #GREATER SCAUP were reported at the Arthur Pack Golf Course
pond on 12/9 (Philip Kline).

HOODED MERGANSERS continued on the pond north of the county Probation
Office at Sam Lena Park in Tucson through at least 12/5 (John Higgins).

A male WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER is still being seen at Way Out West Nature
Preserve (Christopher Vincent). If you would like to see this bird,
please contact the private B&B-style property first (520-305-9690 or
www.wowarizona.com).

An OSPREY and COMMON GOLDENEYE were both seen at Lakeside Park on 12/6
(John Higgins). They continued through at least 12/8. A BONAPARTE'S
GULL was reported at this park on 12/7 (Richard Lasky).

TUMACACORI

A *ROSE-THROATED BECARD was reported along the Santa Cruz River north of
Santa Gertrudis Lane on 12/9 (James Barr). Along the Lane itself in the
pyracantha bushes, the #RUFOUS-BACKED ROBIN and now two different
#VARIED THRUSHES were reported as well (one bright male and one
female-looking bird).

PATAGONIA

A #SURF SCOTER was seen at Patagonia Lake on 12/8 (Matt Brown), as were
5 BONAPARTE'S GULLS.

Two *BLACK-CAPPED GNATCATCHERS and an ELEGANT TROGON were seen this week
on the low hillside along the south shore of Patagonia Lake between the
stairs and the southeast end of the Lake along the nature trail (m.
obs). Three different #EASTERN PHOEBES are apparently hanging out at
the east end of Patagonia Lake State Park this week (Will Russell et
al). Birds with definitively different plumage features were described
from the same morning at various points between the end of the steps on
the nature trail to the inflow of Patagonia Lake at Sonoita Creek. A
COMMON GOLDENEYE was on the Lake on 12/6 (John Saba).

SULPHUR SPRINGS VALLEY

A #GREATER SCAUP was seen at Whitewater Draw WMA on 12/7 (Stuart Healy),
as were 2 female COMMON GOLDENEYES and 2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS.

DUDLEYVILLE

A LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was seen in the pecans at the end of Mesquite Road
in Dudleyville on 12/6 (Doug Jenness).

BENSON

2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen at the Benson Wastewater Treatment Plant
ponds on 12/8 (Lainie Epstein). 8 COMMON GOLDENEYE (2 male, 6 female)
were reported from here on 12/6.

SIERRA VISTA/HEREFORD

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK flew over the intersection of Highway 92 and Snyder
Blvd in Sierra Vista on 12/6 (Tony Battiste).

A PINYON JAY has also been seen in the Vista Grande neighborhood of
Hereford this week (Tony Battiste).

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

SIERRA VISTA - Construction continues on State Route 92 on the east side
of the Huachuca Mountains. Be prepared for delays.

FORT HUACHUCA - will suspend your driving privileges on Post for 30
days, on your first offense for talking or using a cell phone/Blackberry
while driving. You MUST use a hands free device.

SANTA CRUZ FLATS: Managers at the Evergreen Turf Farm (vicinity of
Tweedy and Pretzer Rds) have requested that anyone birding there on the
weekends please leave by 5:00 PM. This is due to security issues
experienced by the Sod Farm. Birders are still welcome here at other times.

BAIRD'S SPARROW HILL AND THE VACA RANCH CORRAL in the San Rafael Valley
is off limits to birders due to the thoughtless actions of a few
birders. DO NOT ENTER THE PROPERTY. While not currently present, a sign
has been posted previously stating that "stopping within 0.25 mile of
the corral is prohibited."

WASTEWATER TREATMENT FACILITIES: Please read the "Announcements" section
listed at the bottom of the following website for the latest updates on
closures and access to selected Wastewater Reclamation Facilities in

This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, December 10.

Two CACKLING GEESE continue at Lincoln Park in Lincoln Heights. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was along the San Gabriel River south of Beverly on December 4.

The EURASIAN WIGEON near Bette Davis Park in Glendale (at the corner of Victory and Riverside) continued through December 5. Look for the bird in the LA River bordering the park. Another EURASIAN WIGEON was at Hansen Dam on December 6. The bird was moving around the area and was seen on the main lake at Hansen, the pond at the Hansed Dam Goulf Course (south of the dam) at the ponds at the Angeles National Golf Club, north of Foothill Blvd.

Three adult male and one female/immature BLACK SCOTER and and two female/immature WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were at Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo on December 10. Try the parking area at Imperial Highway and Grand and look for the birds between the RV Park south of Imperial north to lifeguard tower number 55.

Unusual inland was a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER at Balboa Lake on December 8. It was seen near the outflow stream at the southeast corner of the lake.

Three WHITE-FACED IBIS were at the spreading ponds along the San Gabriel River between Whittier and Washington in Pico Rivera on December 4.

A BALD EAGLE continues to be seen at Bonelli Regionall Park in San Dimas. It was last reported on December 9.

A LEWIS’S WOODPECKER continues in San Gabriel at the San Gabriel Country Club. It can often be seen on a telephone pole at 510 Del Mar Blvd. Most recently it was reported at the intersection of Roses Road and Country Club Drive.

The RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles continued through December 5. It is frequently seen in a carob tree in the northwest corner of the property. These condominiums are on the south side of Rodeo Road at Cloverdale. For easiest access to the NW section you can park along Hauser. This is private property, but birders are welcome. Please be thoughtful of the residents.

Another RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was at Lacy Park in San Marino on December 10. It was seen near the children’s play area. A GRAY FLYCATCHER continues here. It was last seen by the southwest lawn.

The adult YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at Lindberg Park in Culver City through December 5. It is often opposite 10963 Ocean Drive, but also moves around the area.

Another adult YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continues at Ed Vincent Park in Inglewood. It is often seen in silk oaks between the skateboard park and the tennis courts.

The adult male WILLIAMSON’S SAPSUCKER at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar was seen again on December 9. Look for it in pines around the children’s play area.

The PAINTED REDSTART continues in Monrovia Canyon, usually near the Nature Center. It was reported through December 5.

VENTURA COUNTY—

The BLACK VULTURE in Santa Paula was seen through December 4. Look for it near the junction of Say Road and Highway 150, often in an oak tree at 1147 Say Road.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK was reported from Lake Casitas on December 6.

The VERMILION FLYCATCHER continues in the upper left side of the Santa Paula Cemetery.

A WESTERN FLYCATCHER was at Harmon Barranca along Tyler near Foothill on December 5.

An apparent WINTER WREN was seen near the bridge at the end of Arnold Road on December 7.

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen in Newberry Springs on Dec 5 (Gene Cardiff).

A female and two male VERMILION FLYCATCHERS continued at Cal State San
Bernardino on Dec 6 (Tom Benson).

A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at the Coachella Valley Wild Bird Center on
Dec 5 (Sandy Swan).

IMPERIAL COUNTY

A *LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL* and a THAYER'S GULL were seen at Red Hill
Marina on Dec 8 (David Bell).

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains,
where it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in
Riverside in July, may be common there in December.

In Bernalillo County:
JP on December 9 at the Alameda Bridge found three HERRING GULLS
and seven adult CALIFORNIA GULLS. WW on December 7 saw a
California there.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque BG had a smaller
immature SNOW GOOSE on December 2. On December 9 he saw a SNOW
GOOSE, an all white CACKLING GOOSE, and an immature WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE. DP on December 7 had a PEREGRINE at the ditch behind the
center.
ALG on November 28 reported a PEREGRINE and two MERLINS on
San Antonio between Leona and San Pedro. LG had the Peregrine
again on November 30 near San Pedro and San Antonio; AL saw it on
December 4 just west of Louisiana; and .JSt on December 5 still
along San Antonio west of San Pedro.
JR on December 3 had two adult and an immature SNOW GOOSE along
Rio Grande Blvd. near Roadrunner Road.
At the 10K trailhead in the Sandia Mts. JJ on November 26 saw
seven PINE GROSBEAKS. He had a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the trail
to the tram on Sandia Crest.
The SNC team is banding ROSY FINCHES on Sundays at the Crest
House. On December 6 they banded three BROWN-CAPPED and
one GRAY-CROWNED from a flock of up to 75. The road up was clear,
but there may be snow in the next week.

In Chaves County:
JSa on the Bitter Lake Refuge near Roswell on the November 19
count recorded an increase of 5192 light geese, 20,050 CRANES
(less), and one RED-BREASTED MERGANSER.
.
In Colfax County:
On back roads of the Maxwell refuge JP saw a SAGE SPARROW, two
flyover LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and one CHESTNUT-COLLARED. BW and JNM
on December 1 found 30 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS on the refuge. JP,
JO, and WW on December 4 said the ponds were frozen with the
BARROW’S GOLDENEYE in a small open patch on Stubblefield with a
COMMON LOON. A NORTHERN SHRIKE immature was at Lake 13.
On adjacent Stubblefield Lake BW and JNM on December 1 saw a male
BARROW’S GOLDENEYE and a COMMON LOON with a flyover LAPLAND
LONGSPUR.
The two GOLDEN EAGLES seen in winter south of Maxwell were there
on December 1 for BW and JNM.
South of Springer at mile post 408-9 there was a ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK for JP. BW and JNM had the hawk on December 1.
.
In Curry County:
JLo at his home in southeast Curry Co. had on December 1 a
FERRUGINOUS HAWK and a BARN OWL family in an old building. On
December 7 he had a BOBWHITE covey with a lone SCALED QUAIL,
SISKINS, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, a CURVE-BILLED THRASHER, HOUSE WREN,
and a PRAIRIE FALCON.

In Doña Ana County:
DG at the Four Hills area northeast of US 70 on December 3 found
a HORNED OWL, over 35 CEDAR WAXWINGS in cotoneasters, and three
INCA DOVES.
At his home on 2-3 December there was a PRAIRIE FALCON, SCRUB
JAY, six GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES, 12 BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHERS,
CRISSAL THRASHER, and seven INCA DOVES. DG had the falcon, one
SLATE-COLORED JUNCO, and 50 LESSER GOLDFINCHES on December 3.
CKB at Dripping Springs in the Organ Mts. east of Las Cruces on
November 24 had JUNIPER TITMICE, BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW, and
PHAINOPEPLA. At Aguirre Springs Park on the east side of the
Organs on November 25 he saw LARK BUNTINGS and GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS
in the roadside grasslands and on the Pine Tree Trail SISKINS,
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, ACORN WOODPECKER, STELLER’S JAY, MOUNTAIN
CHICKADEE, and ROBINS.
RC at the Stahlman home at Snow Road and Union at Mesilla Park
on a pyracantha covered white wall on November 26 had an OLIVE
WARBLER. The owners don’t mind birders unless they park at the
gate and please stay near that driveway. DG on December 1 at the
home had two ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, two
PHAINOPEPLAS, a CEDAR WAXWING, and four
INCA DOVES.
At their home near Radium Springs JZ and MS on November 18 had a
HERMIT THRUSH that has been present for a month and may winter. On
December 5 JZ reported ten EASTERN and several WESTERN BLUEBIRDS and the
thrush.
JZ reported on December 4 that little was at the Uvas Valley
playa west of Hatch with an immature GOLDEN EAGLE along NM 185.
On November 26 CKB at the Corralitos Ranch Road had SCALED
QUAIL, and SAGE SPARROWS.
SMc on December 5 had a PRAIRIE FALCON at his home just west of
Organ (east of Las Cruces).

In Grant County:
RSh on November 28 had a RUFOUS-CR0WNED SPARROW at Bill Evans
Lake along the Gila near Cliff. RS had two CANVASBACKS and a SNIPE
on November 27.
EL had a WESTERN SANDPIPER on the Tyrone Sewage Ponds on
November 28.
On November 27 along the Gila Rio Bird Area CKB had MONTEZUMA
QUAILS and a FERRUGINOUS HAWK. RS had a STELLER’S JAY there on
November 27.
A VARIED THRUSH appeared at the DZ home in Silver City on
November 20 (photos).
SL had an OLIVE WARBLER at his home near San Lorenzo on November
26.

In Hidalgo County:
RSh on Fuller Road in the no. part of the county on November 30
saw WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS, and SAGE
SPARROWS The sparrows were still present on December 5. On
December 2 there was a FERRUGINOUS HAWK along Muir Road, hwy. 113.
SANDHILL CRANES have been along the Gila River near
Virden through December 6.
County Hwy.1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch.
Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must NOT go off the
road.
.
In Luna County:
DH at the Mountain View Cemetery in Deming on December 5 saw two
RED CROSSBILLS and a BRIDLED TITMOUSE.
JO on November 14 at Pancho Villa State Park near Columbus saw
about ten LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCHES. Up to 15 were there on November
15 for JP, WW, JO, and CW. CKB on November 26 found three of the
goldfinches with LARK BUNTINGS at the bird bath. LM saw four there
on November 22. DH did not find the goldfinches on December 6, but
saw two BARN OWLS and four LONG-EARED OWLS.
At a pond south of Pancho Villa had an AVOCET there on November
15 for JP, JO, WW, and CW with three HARRIS’S HAWKS and a WHITE-
TAILED KITE.
LM saw a HARRIS’S HAWK eight miles east of Deming on November
23.

In Mora County;
JP on November 20 at Watrous had a male EASTERN BLUEBIRD. BW
and JNM on December 1 had at a ranch pond on NM 161 near Watrous’s
exit 364 two WHITE-FRONTED GEESE with a NORTHERN SHRIKE at mile
marker 16 further west on 161.
.
In Otero County:
DG contacted the biologist at Holloman AFB on the Holloman
closures. There is a beetle infestation at Lagoon G that they are
trying to rid. One can walk past the gate to Stinky Lake, but not
drive in and can still bird there. Contact David Griffin at 575-
32-200 for more details.

In Rio Arriba County:
AT on December 5 and 6 near San Antonio Peak north of Tres
Piedras saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE, a BLACK and ten BROWN-CAPPED ROSY
FINCHES, five GOLDEN and one BALD EAGLES, and three ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS.

In San Miguel County:
JA reported on December 3 that KB had a FOX SPARROW at her home
in Montezuma. Her phone number to see it is 505-454-1504. She
also had a LINCOLN’S SPARROW and two CASSIN’S FINCHES.
At the Las Vegas Refuge on November 20 JP on Crane Lake found 45
AVOCETS and an adult WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE.

In Sandoval County:
BH reported on December 9 at Cochiti Lake 250 LESSER SCAUPS, 24
COMMON GOLDENEYES, 175 COMMON MERGANSERS, three DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS, four adult CALIFORNIA GULLS and four BONAPARTE’S GULLS.
JMc on December 5 reported at his Placitas home north of
Albuquerque AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, SISKINS, CURVE-BILLED THRASHER, and
SCALED QUAIL.

In Sierra County:
JO on November 26 at the Dam Site Recreation Area of Elephant
Butte had a RED-THROATED LOON. It was not found on December 5.
At North Monticello Point of Elephant Butte Lake AM on November
22 saw five SANDHILL CRANES, eight SNOW GEESE, and four AVOCETS.
TB on November 30 had a LONG-TAILED DUCK with the many WESTERN
and CLARK’S GREBES on the lake.
On November 13 and 15 JO saw the three BROWN PELICANS on South
Highland Point of the lake. DC found them on November 20 (photo).
On December 5 JP, JO, and WW saw two immature TUNDRA SWANS at
South Highland and later at South Monticello Point.
At Hot Springs Landing on November 21 DC saw a COMMON LOON.
At the Rock Canyon Marina of the lake JP, JO, and WW on December
5 had the adult CALIFORNIA and two adult HERRING GULLS.
AM on November 19 at the Paseo del Rio Park below the Elephant
Butte Dam had a BRIDLED TITMOUSE. On November 22 there was a
male COMMON MERGANSER with WESTERN BLUEBIRDS. At the park on
November 26 AM had the titmice, a PHAINOPEPLA, and a MOORHEN. TB
on November 30 reported the MOORHEN at the holding pond, one
titmouse, and a pair of MEXICAN MALLARDS near the bridge. JP, JO,
and WW on December 5 saw a BROWN CREEPER and the titmouse.
At Percha Dam Park JP, JO, and WW on December 5 found six
MOORHENS, two SWAMP SPARROWS, an EASTERN PHOEBE, YELLOWTHROAT, and
up to three BRIDLED TITMICE. DH had an OSPREY on December 6.
At Riverside Park below Caballo Dam the trio had a GREEN-TAILED
TOWHEE and a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER.

In Socorro County:
RY on the Water Canyon trip west of Socorro on November 21-22
recorded BROWN CREEPER and an EASTERN BLUEBIRD.
JS at his Socorro home on November 19 had a BLUE JAY. It was
seen by JP and WW on November 21.
JO at his home near Luis Lopez south of Socorro on November 17
had a MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE and an INCA DOVE. On November 23 JO had
a zaboria FOX SPARROW at his yard with four WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge south of San Antonio JO on November
20 had a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW and two HARRIS’S SPARROW from the
visitor center window. JP and WW saw both sparrows on November 21,
saying the Harris’s had an odd plumage. JSt on November 20
reported a banded immature APLOMADO FALCON on the Marsh Loop.
(photos). CB and NH on November 21 had two immature COMMON
GOLDENEYES at the Boardwalk. JSt on November 22 at the
headquarters lounge found a male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK near the
RVs, also seen by JO (photo). MR on November 26 saw the Golden-
crowned Sparrow and six EASTERN BLUEBIRDS. ALG on November
28 found a PRAIRIE WARBLER north of Audio Stop 11 on the Farm Loop.
It was later seen by JO and SF (photos). ALG also saw the Harris’s
Sparrow. CKB on November 23 had the golden-crowned and Harris’s
Sparrows, the Aplomado near stop 4, with the Harris’s plus a WHITE-
THROATED SPARROW at the Cactus Garden on November 28. JP said that
others on December 5 had the Golden-crowned and a red FOX SPARROW.
DH on December 5 had the Golden-crowned and an EASTERN PHOEBE on the east
side of the Marsh Loop. On December 3 TW had the WHITE-TAILED KITE again
on the refuge along the Marsh Loop (photos).

In Union County:
DW on December 7 reported a male HOODED MERGANSER at Clayton
Lake with 12 CACKLING GEESE and an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE on a fence
north of Clayton.

In Valencia County:
LL had LESSER GOLDFINCHES at her feeder east of the Laguna
Pueblo.

A BAR-TAILED GODWIT, first found on Oct 31st at upper Upper Newport Bay, was
seen at least through the 5th. The bird frequents, at low tide, the area
around the outlet of San Diego Creek below the Jamboree Street crossing. We
want to keep track of sightings of this bird, so keep them coming. On the
26th it was noted to us that the bird was limping. Otherwise, its feeding
and flying well. If the bird is seen in real difficulty, the Wetlands &
Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach (714 374-5587) will attempt a
rescue, but right now rescue is not indicated.

ZONE-TAILED HAWK...12/8... over Mission Viejo around La Paz and Geronimo.

EURASIAN WIGEON male near Muth Center of Upper Newport Bay 12/4. Another
male Eurasian Wigeon returning to winter in Lake Forest, small park on Ridge
Route a block west of Muirlands.

Geese spending the night on Huntington Lake at Huntington Central Park this
last week, and leaving before 7 am for parts unknown: immature and adult
ROSS'S GOOSE, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, SNOW GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE, along
with hundreds of Canada Geese.

Scoters.... thousands off of Huntington Beach.... within flock a male BLACK
SCOTER near the mouth of Bolsa Bay outlet and a female Black Scoter near
Warner Street end of Bolsa Chica State Beach, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER near Bolsa
Chica inlet and another near Warner.

GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET at Laguna Niguel Regional Park 12/6.

PINE WARBLER returning to Estancia Park in Costa Mesa to winter. 12/5

GREATER SCAUP downstream from Hamilton crossing of Santa Ana River and
female COMMON GOLDENEYE 1/4 mile upstream from Pacific Coast Highway 12/5

THAYER'S GULL 12/5 at Bolsa Chica Preserve, and another at Doheny State
Beach 12/8.

GOLDEN EAGLES: pair on radio towers on abandoned El Toro Marine Base (off of
Pusan Way) 12/5 and another pair over San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary on 12/4
