Hello,

My name is Jerry Kaidor. I've been using bitpim for a few years now.
Now I have a sudden interest in developing....

I just replaced my aged Sanyo MM-8300 with a sparkling new SCP-3810. No
bitpim support. In fact, there is no USB driver provided. A cursory google
search did not unearth one. Neither did the Sprint website.

I'm willing to do some work to get support for my phone. I'm a
tolerably good programmer - I don't know Python, but have 25 years of
professional software development experience, mostly low-level C. Lately,
I've written about twenty thousand lines of Perl. And I know just enough
about USB to be dangerous :).

The data cable that I bought at the Sprint store won't even charge the
phone on my winxp box without a driver to turn on the 5V. Plugging it into
my Linux server gets me

"usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2"
"usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice"
...and the phone is charging...

So - what's the usual procedure for bringing up a new phone? My first
guess would be to:

* Find the Linux source for a driver for a similar phone.
* Dig into the Linux usb stuff ( /proc/bus/usb? ) to get the product ID and manufacturer ID
for my phone. Or maybe find some sort of usb analyzer.

* Hack the usb driver to try it out for my phone. I suspect that most
phones use one of those usb->Serial converter chips ( CP2102 etc ).
And it will look like a modem ( CDC-class USB device ).

Or maybe to start, just get bitpim for Linux, compile it, run it, and see what
happens :).

I'm working my way through getting everything installed and when I go to tortiseSVN and go to the bitpim svn location, it prompts for a user name and password. Do I have to request one to get started or am I just being a little dense? (that happens at times)

new LG phonebook protocol

It turns out LG did not completely remove the phonebook protocol (old command 0xff). Newer phones (VX-5500, VX-9600, VX-11K, and likely others) use the 0xf1 command. Here is what I know so far (still looking for commands):

0xf1 0x0a -- -- -- phone info (mtn, phone kind, sw version, hw revision, etc)

0xf1 0x28 -- -- -- phonebook info. returns the maximum count for contacts and calendar events

0xf1 0x29 0-max ?? ?? read contact

0xf1 0x2a 0-max ?? ?? write contact

0xf1 0x2c 0-max ?? ?? clear contact

0xf1 0x2d 0-max ?? ?? read name of built-in ringtone at index. last valid name is No Ring

0xf1 0x2e ?? ?? group index read group names

0xf1 0x2f ?? ?? ?? clears all contacts when index, option1, option2 are 0 (haven't tried any other values)

0xf1 0x32 0-max ?? ?? read event

0xf1 0x33 0-max ?? ?? delete event??

If anyone has the time (and an older LGPBv1 phone-- VX-8550 and newer) I want to know if all LGPBv1 phones use the above protocol. If so then the 0xf1 0x2d command could be used in com_lgvx8550.py to generate the built-in ringtone list instead of us hard-coding the list. I still prefer directly modifying pbentry.dat and pbnumber.dat for reading/writing the phonebook as they are more powerful (street address flags, for example, do not appear in the 0xf1 protocol).

Sanyo Katana II 6650 Export SMS

I am having a problem exporting the SMS Messages from this phone. There are a total of 245 SMS in the inbox and outbox (196 and 49 respectively). When I select Export SMS as a CSV it shows 245 entries. It will only export the inbox and none of the entries in the outbox. I selected all the outbox messages and attempted to export the 49 selected messages. It only exported the outbox headings and none of the message data.

Any thoughts on how to correct this would be appreciated. I can send the BitPim dat files to anyone willing to assist.

There was a binary for the last test build, but it wasn't uploaded to the site. Shortly afterward my sole PPC laptop crashed and burned. I have not had the opportunity to revive the machine or to recreate the build environment. My availability is going to be pretty bleak for the next two months as I finish my third semester of law school. If there are other members looking to take over the responsibility, I'd be happy to walk them through it.

1)      Bitpim auto-detected my phone as CDMA other: got nothing out
2)      I set my phone to be the VX9100 (the previous model): again, not even phone info
3)      I browse the file system: success!
a.       Pictures are in /brew/mod/10888 as *.jpg
b.      Videos are in /brew/mod/10890 as *.3g2 or 3GPP2 (according to Wikipedia, which claims it is similar to mpeg4. Quicktime played it perfectly!)

I can develop too and I just got a Samsung Rogue. I'm sad I can't get my
pictures off of it just yet, so developing support for BitPim sounds like a

Hi again

I still have a VX-5500 that I would like to loan out - is there someone who could use it for adding BitPim support?
Maybe djpham?

I know it's not a fancy phone, but as the commodity model, I'm sure a lot of people ended up with it.

Basic (a little buggy) VX-9200 support exists in the latest test build. The next build will have better support for the VX/CX-9200 and VX-11K.

I don?t know how far along you guys are in supporting the VX9200, but I experimented a little today and got pictures and videos off, so I thought I would share my wisdom:

1) Bitpim auto-detected my phone as CDMA other: got nothing out

2) I set my phone to be the VX9100 (the previous model): again, not even phone info

3) I browse the file system: success!

a. Pictures are in /brew/mod/10888 as *.jpg

b. Videos are in /brew/mod/10890 as *.3g2 or 3GPP2 (according to Wikipedia, which claims it is similar to mpeg4. Quicktime played it perfectly!)
