Developers and Users,

Just a short update on the goings on with blojsom, and me, your project
steward.

* Web 2.0 Presence

@blojsomdev is the Twitter stream. It's still a valid stream. Really.

"tweets" have fallen quiet, if only because yours truly lost his
iPhone's flash drive. And with that, went Facebook, Twitter, and
constant online presence.

Occasionally, I get to the website to post. Not as often as I would, or
should.

I'll have a new phone shortly, and then maybe my delirium tremors for
constant presence on the internet may end.

* Maven

The conversion to a Maven project is complete. It builds cleanly and
runs. Maven provides an IDE agnostic build platform as well as a
convention over configuration packaging.

blojsom follows the same build structure, so everything would be
familiar to regular users.

If you're a Maven-maven, give it a once over. Diff patches are welcome
where optimizations to the POMs, and advanced mojos are available to
reduce redundant files layouts, etc. I did take some short cuts with the
bootstraping.

* Library Updates

With the Maven migration a number of libraries were updated. Use groovy?
1.0 is now included (from the beta 0.4). Velocity 1.6.2 is provided,
from 1.3 or 1.4. This gives you access to Lists and Arrays more
intuitively, including the request parameters.

* Getting the "maven-spike"

You absolutely have to read the README provided. The Artifactory server
is not for general use and an HTTPS Client Certificate is provided. It
additionally provides some insulation against distribution licensing
until I can make the maven-spike general release.

* Admin interface refactoring

The biggest effort underway at the moment is a refactoring of the
Administrative Interface.

Nothing immediately apparent to regular users, retaining the excellent
work by smallTransport.com. The underpinnings are getting some much
needed updates, including:

HTML 4.01 Strict Validation
JavaScript and Ajax migration to the YUI 2 with
a path to YUI 3 open.
CSS standardization on YUI Reset, Grids, Fonts and Base

The latter one an important change that provides solid cross-browser
presentation and a well documented microformat for new developer ramp-up.

It also demonstrates how to limit memory. When setting your OPTS, you
can "bound" the heap with the parameters: -Xms nnnnM -Xmx nnnnM (where
'n' is a number.

I found this article to very helpful in not just setting the JVM memory,
but understanding how Tomcat allocates and/or reclaims (or doesn't)
memory...

don't accidentally create a situation where other Java Applications
may get settings you intended for Tomcat and visa versa).

CATALINA_OPTS - Blojsom and CPU

I have a latency issue on my website. The application uses an
inordinate amount of CPU.

It was suggested that I set CATALINA_OPTS and the reason given was
that Blojosom can use a lot of memory.

Can anyone advise me how to investigate the memory usage and see if
that is a likely cause, and, after that, how I can best set
CATALINA_OPTS?

I could probably write a script to take care of the old links but I know there will be problems to get the user to accept a ore clumsy way to publish blogs.

Has anybody else gone this path and has some tips and tricks to share?
Unfortunately my java skills are very limited..

mod_jk is deprecated in Apache 2.2, now the default Apache builds on
Snow Leopard, in favor of mod_proxy_ajp.

Did Apple load the JSP Dispatcher in the 2.32 codeline? Blojsom 3
deprecates the JSP view for Velocity (http://velocity.apache.org/). The
JSPDispatcher is still available however.

I cannot speak to the compatibility of 2.32 JSP views with features of
the 3.0 codeline. It's something I should look at though in the maven-spike.

I have been using blojsom for several years. First in SuSE 9.1, it always works once completely tuned. I recently migrated all my system to a newer machine with debian lenny 5.0 r2 installed.

The following are the software version:

mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.51a, for debian-linux-gnu (x86_64) using readline 5.2

Using CATALINA_BASE: /usr/share/tomcat5.5
Using CATALINA_HOME: /usr/share/tomcat5.5
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /usr/share/tomcat5.5/temp
Using JRE_HOME: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun
Server version: Apache Tomcat/5.5
Server built: Oct 15 2008 12:57:44
Server number: 5.5.26.0
OS Name: Linux
OS Version: 2.6.26-2-amd64
Architecture: amd64
JVM Version: 1.5.0_17-b04
JVM Vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc.

Together with Java and JDBC set according to debian architecture, especially,
copy mysql-connector-java-5.1.6.jar to $TOMCAT_HOME/common/lib/.

Although I am migrating my database from SuSE 9.1 to Debian 5, I make sure everything is correct by checking the grants for user name:

mysql> show grants for zoublog;

However, I am still having "unable to load blog ID" error.

I also try to create new blojsom database from scratch, and also use svn to check out version 3.3, and follow the instruction. I have the same error.

Well, a big commit on the Maven Spike tonight (of interest to developers
really, but if you're a user: blojsom is alive!)

More work in the Admin Interface with the YUI. Still using tiny-mce, but
soon to use RTE from the YUI.

The big add comes in the work on the blojsom-addon-plugins library and
blojsom-core with the upgrade to Velocity 1.6.2 and in the
VelocityDispatcher to add the request parameters by default to the
Velocity Context.

In the VelocityDispatcher

context.put("params",httpServletRequest.getParameterMap());

With the new version of Velocity we can get parameters, keyed to values
stored as String[] (arrays!):

Some other updates to libraries have also been added, of particular
interest to some might be groovy 1.0. Groovy is gaining popularity, so
going from a 0.4 jar to 1.0 might, to some, be exciting.

If you are using blojsom with the GroovyDispatcher, speak up! We need a
tester.

Work continues, and allow us a "tease": a new internationalization is
pending in the maven spike. It might make it to 3.3 release to perk some
eyebrows and maybe new interest.

Blojsom is lives! While I've been focusing on migrating the build and
testing of blojsom to a Maven infrastructure, I'm also patching the 3.3
line for a pending release.

The build uses HSQLDB as an in-memory database. It is not intended to
provide persistence beyond container restarts, but allow you a "taste"
of the application server without committing to mysql, postgres or
other database.

A fix for BLOJSOM-257 on the TwitterNotificationPlugin is also
included (watch for a more robust plug-in in the near future with
bit.ly links and administrative configuration and use).

A more robust build.xml is also provided for developers and users of
Tomcat. Build, deploy, restart and more right from your IDE or command
line! Be sure to read the provided comments as some catalina jars are
required.

As soon as I get some expanded permissions on the confluence and
sourceforge site, I'll add the jar, documentation, and GPG signatures.

My apologies... now I'm confusing Blojsom with Pebble as I'm trying to make one of them work. Blojsom's home page only specifies LDAP, not necessarily Active Directory. Searching via Google turns up some references that Active Directory has worked, but I haven't learned how.

LOL. I'm certainly not claiming to have a good handle on this as I have never used Blojsom, looked at its source code, or managed Active Directory. I'm simply a prospective user who was potentially misled by the features listed on Pebble's home page. I thought I would forward my findings in case they are helpful to developers or other users.

Single-sign on (SSO) and Active Directory was discussed by developers back in 2004:

But I have yet to find documentation or read confirmation that the features exist and work in Blojsom 3.2.

I did try to get my feet wet in the code only to realize that Acegi Security has been replaced by Spring Security. I believe the learning curve for everything here requires more time than I have available.

Since you have a good handle on this, perhaps you could contribute the code
to authenticate AD users in Blojsom without hardcoding usernames and
passwords in configuration files and without presenting a form page if the
user is already authenticated with the server.

My research is proving fruitful... but this is new to me, so I'm bound
to be making some mistakes. Moving this thread to the dev list to
continue.

I think the answer is in the difference between NTLM and LDAP.

The LDAP plugin provides only a database to auth against and cannot
provide a "password-less" admin. NTLM would provide you with the
"password-less" admin facility you seek by looking at the requested
blog to be admin'd.

There is potential for serious security problem with NTLM auth (not
present in a scenario like MediaWiki): Bob could admin Alice's blog
(if Alice did not first configure explicit permissions for Bob).

blojsom admin cannot auto login without performing a NTLM auth, or
getting that auth from a higher scope, like the context.

I'm thinking about a listener that performs that auth when the admin
is requested. This would forego the need to login as the context would
have the authorization for the blog user providing it to the
session...I think.

I need research that and to play with that a little bit to see.

I did read that article from 4 years ago. I don't think radeox is necessary (it's not mentioned in Blojsom 3's LDAP documentation). Also, the blog data is now managed in a database instead of blojsom-blog-home. In fact, blojsom.properties doesn't even exist any more; the provider needs assigned in classes/blojsom.xml.

Between the AD user (already authenticated with Apache and named on the login form), the blog owner, the DN w/ and w/o CN and UID, bindinguser, and bindingpassword, there are many combinations of things to try and I may have missed one. I know firewalls and other system level software aren't interfering because Subversion, Hudson, Sventon and other services all authenticate with AD and run just fine on the same system. I'm about to give up.

I think for you to enable login-less administration will require some
level of SSO (possibly, but if the blojsom instance is the first
application encountered, you still have to login to kick SSO into
action). It appears that even with LDAP all you get is authentication
against LDAP over a flatfile. You still have to log in.

I'm going to take look at how we configured our mediawiki tomorrow to
see if it provides some clues, and may even do a local install of
blojsom at work to experiment. This is intriguing for a project I'm
working on as well (in blojsom).

Yes, "justin" is the AD user, "justin" is the username I tried on the form, "justin" is the username I tried w/ and w/o bindinguser, "justin" and "Full Name" are the UID and CN respectively I tried w/ and w/o in blog-ldap-authorization-dn, and "justin" is now the owner of the default blog as configured in the database. I even tried bindingpassword temporarily, although I doubt my admins would ever allow a hardcoded password. I have no idea if anyone has even gotten AD to work with Blojsom recently.

One behavioral question I have yet to answer is whether I should see a login form page at all once LDAP is correctly configured. Credentials can be fetched from the current browser session which is what I believe Hudson does (see reference in earlier post). I'm sure users don't want to login twice.

Since the default blog is owned by the user default... errr, by default... I did jump into MySQL and change the blog owner to my username. I received the same result. If the credentials were not approved, I would expect a message to that effect instead of an error message suggesting a problem with the LDAP configuration.

Full disclosure: I have never used LDAP in any implementation of
blojsom, I have had some success and failures implementing AD
integration in MediaWiki. It works sometimes, and fails other times,
all based on things like GPOs and other memberships in the AD
directory. Blame it on blojsom, Microsoft (for the rather hackneyed
way AD implements the LDAP spec), or your AD administrators, the
latter two often the sources of problems we've had.

Has anyone used a recent version of Blojsom with Active Directory? I followed the instructions for setting up LDAP and even specified each of the init-param's.

I did unpack the war file per instructions. Jetty does recognize the webapp, the index.html is displayed.

The instructions recommended confirm that the steps taken where ok.

I suspect it's a path issue yet cannot put my finger on it.
