Bluetooth help

by Peter Vandrish :: Rate this Message:

Hi,
I have a waysmall 400xm-bt and I am wondering how to bring up the bluetooth device. Booting the computer
said that HCI manager was initialized. When I try to use hcitool:
# hcitool scan
Device is not available: No such device

I want to hopefully establish a serial bluetooth connection to my pocket pc someday.
Thanks,
Pete

Hi Peter,

Note - I can't recall if there are some GPIO pin reassignments which
need to be made for the 400 xmBT -
but first I would try the following:

1). make sure your BT antenna is connected
2). make a backup copy of the file /etc/default/bluetooth
3). change the settings in /etc/default/bluetooth to the following:

(if its not in the file, add this):  HCIATTACH_ENABLE=false

    uncomment the lines:
       PAND_OPTIONS  "--listen --role NAP"
       PAND_OPTIONS "--role PANU --search --service....."

    change the line "PAND_ENABLE=true"

save the file.

then stop/start BT by:

/etc/init.d/bluetooth stop
/etc/init.d/bluetooth start

then do a "hciconfig -a"  to see if the hci0 (your gumstix BT) is UP or not.

Note - The default passkey for most of the gumstix BT devices is BlueZ

Now if that still doesn't work look at this thread on Nabble:

http://www.nabble.com/Bluetooth-stop-working-td12489241.html#a12508041

I don't know if this was permanently fixed in a later release or not.

Peter,

What version of software are you running?  buildroot or OE?

I am still using buildroot actually. It is a pretty old revision, maybe 800 or so.
Thanks

Peter,

am curious, did any of our suggestions help get your BT working?  FWIW,
I'd either jump into OE or move up to the most recent version of
buildroot.  They have fixed a lot of issues and I think its worthwhile.
Lots of support available from this group when issues arise.

best,

Mark, I tried the first set of suggestions you gave me about changing some parameters in the /etc/default/bluetooth script with no luck. I will try GPIO thing soon.
Thanks again,

Sylvain,
I had those errors with my waysmall on a newer release of buildroot. I am using a very old buildroot revision now, for other driver compatibility reasons, and it always says that there is success initializing at boot time. Although, I have not had any success using hcitools or hciconfig while the system is up and running.

Sylvain,

It is very odd that your vedex bt doesn't work with a recent oe build!

What release are you running?  How old is your verdex?  Did the bt
feature ever work?

I'm running a r298 I compiled a few days ago for rgb16.
No I never got BT to work, I just received the verdex last week.
I have a r300 compiling now to try the touch screen fix this evening.

Steve,

I also just received a new xm4-bt last week and with OE 302 tried for hours
last night to get bt to work. Any specific pre-built image you'd like me to
try.
I don't have another xm4-bt so can vouch for it ever working for me.

Steve,

No luck with bluetooth on my new xm4-bt.

There should be nothing I need to change right? After booting hcitool scan
should show my decice?

Flashed the latest prebuilt glibc images from today.
Used the basic-image for testing.

>From a cold or warm boot I always get this.

Trying baud rate 921600...
No response after reset
No response from BT module

Initialization timed out.
ALSA: loading sound modules...

If I do a /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart I just get.

/etc/init.d/bluetooth start

Re: Bluetooth help

Hi,

exactly the same problem I got with the xm4-bt that I bought a few days ago.
No way to have bluetooth working still. I tryed with almost everything said and written before.
The xm4-bt is attached to a consoleLCD-vx18 (with Samsung monitor) and to a netmicroSDvx.
I hope to find a solution soon as I need bluetooth as it's to be used for bluetooth marketing.
Thank you all for your help,

Andrea

Marc,

I've found a motherboard that exhibits the same failure mode (wrong
response size).  Looks like the module behavior may have changed with
the latest shipment.

Let me get with Infineon to investigate the problem.

There should be nothing I need to change right? After booting hcitool scan
should show my decice?

Flashed the latest prebuilt glibc images from today.
Used the basic-image for testing.

From a cold or warm boot I always get this.

Marc,

I just tried the pre-built basic-image revision 302 on my verdex
xm4-bt and had no issues with it.

Are you using the pre-built image or one that you built yourself?

I don't have another xm4-bt so can vouch for it ever working for me.

Sylvain,

It is very odd that your vedex bt doesn't work with a recent oe
build!

What release are you running?  How old is your verdex?  Did the bt
feature ever work?

    FWIW,
I'd either jump into OE or move up to the most recent
version of

Lots of support available from this group when issues

Re: Bluetooth help

Marc, Syvain, Andrea:

It seems that the newest shipment of bt modules have a slightly
different behavior at startup.  I don't yet have an offending module
at hand, so I'd like to ask for your help in testing a fix.

The proposed fix involves a new version of /sbin/hciattach.  I've
verified that the revision still works with old modules, I need your
help to verify that it actually fixes the problem :-)

If your gumstix has a net connection you can get the revised hciattach by:

wget http://www.sakoman.net/oe/hciattach
chmod +x hciattach
mv /sbin/hciattach /sbin/hciattach-orig
mv hciattach /sbin/hciattach

Then reboot and hopefully all will be well.  You will likely see a
message saying "Got Startup Event -- retrying once" and then if all
goes well the retry will succeed and you will have bluetooth.

Thanks!

Steve
