Bug#542767: apt: autoremove removes needed packagesPackage: apt
Version: 0.7.21 Severity: critical Justification: breaks unrelated software I tried to install Internet Explorer to view a web site designed for IE. Downloaded IE8 from microsoft.com, installed wine, installed current wine beta from winehq. Didn't work. Tried viewing the web site with epiphany (already installed) and lynx. Installed and tried konqueror, galeon. Removed epiphany, galeon and konquerer in one apt-get call. Then a lot of packages were marked for autoremoval (The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required). I thought, hmm, quite many, but I also removed several, possibly large packages, so I didn't check and started 'apt-get autoremove'. While it started removing packages I noticed it would remove important or unrelated packages like gcalctool gnome-desktop-environment gnome-games gedit whois totem-common arj gnome-volume-manager gdm evince gnuchess transmission-common and interrupted apt-get. After reinstalling epiphany apt-get still advertises these packages for autoremoval, so they don't seem to be dependencies of epiphany. They also were not installed with galeon and konqueror so apt-get must have selected them for autoremoval erroneously. I'm now clueless if I should apt-get install all these packages which would prevent them from autoremoval, but OTOH also mark them manually installed which in some cases would be incorrect. I don't know, which packages are still needed, and which not (e.g. libbrasero-media0 ekiga libtelepathy2 libgmythupnp0, which I have no idea what they are about). I include the shell output of this session. You may scan it from bottom up to where the big block of packages marked for autoremoval appears first. Bug#542767: apt: autoremove removes needed packagesOn Fri, Aug 21, 2009 at 10:20:50AM +0200, Bernhard Kuemel wrote:

I think marking GDE as manually installed will fix your problem. Regards, Steve -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-REQUEST@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#542767: marked as done (apt: autoremove removes needed packages)Your message dated Fri, 06 Nov 2009 20:18:24 +0100
with message-id <1257535104.9727.8.camel@jak-laptop> and subject line Re: Bug#542767: apt: autoremove removes needed packages has caused the Debian Bug report #542767, regarding apt: autoremove removes needed packages to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what this message is talking about, this may indicate a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact owner@... immediately.) -- 542767: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=542767 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact owner@... with problems Package: apt Version: 0.7.21 Severity: critical Justification: breaks unrelated software I tried to install Internet Explorer to view a web site designed for IE.
