i've been encountering this problem with both qemu and kvm.

looking at the error in ~/.xsession-errors:

  ObRender-ERROR **: Your bit depth is currently unhandled

it seems to be that openbox can't handle qemu/kvm's video when X.org is using
24 bit color depth, which is a frequent default. changing X.org to use 16 bit
color depth appeared to work around the issue for me.
