On the bill is Brass Menazeri. These guys are burning it up and attracting a whole new crowd to Balkan music. They have been so busy touring that we are lucky and delighted to be sharing the evening with them.

Luka is a compelling presence you won't want to miss! Not to mention Paul Brown, who is coming in from Nepal! We hear he has a new look ;)>, and as always, it will be a joy to play with him again.

Also the melodious Joe Finn and Leslie Bonnett will be joining us this evening for a set of music for couple dancing, Scandinavian style. This dulcet duet sounds like a full orchestra! Bet they'll play some Cajun tunes as well.

And we are very excited to say that the fabulous Steve Kotansky will be joining us! Steve, a very well know and loved dancer and teacher in the Balkan scene is also coming out from New York for this evening. His knowledge and passion are legendary, and he has offered to do a little teaching during the evening. If you want to learn how to do it Balkan style, you couldn't get a better chance. Just having Steve on the dance floor is a lesson, and we are privileged that he will be joining all of us.

All in all, it's looking like a really fun evening....we hope you can join us!!!

Arjang Faramarzi: Tombak (Persian goblet drum)

Saeed Kamjoo started studying kamanche at the age of seventeen with Ardeshir Kâmkâr, and furthered his under the guidance of masters Ali Akbar Shekârchi and Ustad Asghar Bahâri. He is also a graduate of the School of Fine Arts from Tehran University. His approach to playing kamanche is based on his perception of the values inherent in classical Persian music. Kamjoo's style of playing kamanche combines creativity and authenticity with innovation. A founding member
of the Namad Ensemble, Kamjoo has also performed as a guest artist with Dastan Ensemble, one of the most renowned Persian musical groups.

Arjang Faramarzi began playing tombak at the age of eleven under the supervision of late Master Naser Farhangfar, the poet and the genius in tombak, at Zoroastrian Youths Organization (Faravahar). We'll have thirteen musicians, playing and singing a fine variety of dance music, and we'd like to have a big crowd of dancers to give the evening an energetic start.

"Da! Mozhem" means "Yes! We can" in
Bulgarian. They are a group of good friends who play music together. Typically the group donates payments from performances to various good causes, including the SF AIDS walk, Second Harvest Food Bank, Ashkenaz and theWorld Arts West Ethnic Dance Festival. Various
members have played with folk groups such as Westwind, The People's
International Silver String Macedonian Band, Born to Drone, Dalmacijo
Singers, and even the bluegrass group Sidesaddle.
Band members are:
John
Burke, Joyce Clyde, Alan Moore, Barbara Saxton, Ginny Snyder, Rich
Tucker, andShannon Wells. In addition, Da! Mozhem will feature Sue
Curkov of Novi Stari Tamburasi on prim, the Croatian equivalent of a
mandolin.

Born to Drone is a women's vocal ensemble
specializing in folk music from the Balkan region and beyond. The
group's main focus is Bulgaria, but they also sing music from former
Yugoslavia (Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia, Slovenia), Albania,
Czechoslovakia, Finland, Georgia, Israel, Latvia, Roumania,Russia, and
even Norway!
Born to Drone members are:
Barbara Saxton, Mary Tusa, Nettie Wijsman, Jeanne Benioff (Director), Leslie Keenan, and Heather Meeker.

Doors open 7:30, music starts at 8:00.

DETAILS:
COST for live music night: $10.00
plus $$ for the tip basket.

BRING SNACKS TO SHARE--sweet, salty, or savory, but please, nothing
requiring plates and utensils. There are no kitchen facilities or
cleanup services.

PARKING: Parking is FREE in the lot at night.
It isn't necessary to purchase a ticket.

Take the Park Ave (Capitola) exit and turn left on Park. Go uphill to
Soquel Drive, and turn right on Soquel. Stay in the right lane. The
Cabrillo Gym complex is just past the second signal intersection
(Cabrillo College Drive). Stay on Soquel Drive and turn right at the
next parking lot, after you pass under the pedestrian bridge.

The young people of Tance will perform for us. Be sure to bring some money
for Tance's bake sale.

Introduction to Dance: 7:00 - 7:30
Local teachers will teach some of the easy dances that will open the party.
Everybody welcome and join the fun. Experienced dancers find someone to
mentor.

Party : 7:30 - 12:00, Donate for a Dance
2010 Scholarship Ball program will be made up of dances that a donation has
been pledged for by clubs or individuals. The number of dances is limited to
70 dances. The minimum donation to get a dance on the list is five dollars;
any donation above $5.00 dollars increases the dance rank on the play list.
The evening will open with the dances taught during the Introduction to
Dance session. We will start playing the highest ranked dance at 8:00.

Changing a Dance's Ranking on the List.
For each dollar above five that a dance receives, a little birds will chirp
for it. The more chirpers the higher the dance's ranking on the play-list.
Everyone that comes to the ball will get one little bird to chirp for his or
her favorite dance. If you want raise the chorus of chirping even louder,
you can get all the little chirpers you want for a donation of $1.00 per
bird.

Parking
Medium sized parking lot on the side of the building. Street parking is
permitted. There is a 3-story parking garage just a block & 1/2 to the west
(accessible from Main St. OR Hwy. 50).

Ellis Island Old World Folk Band has been delighting Bay Area audiences for nearly three decades with its renditions of lively freilachs, soulful doinas, danceful bulgars, old world waltzes, Yiddish vocals, music from Eastern Europe, Greece, Russia, Spain and Italy. Ellis Island Band has played a pioneering role in the revival of klezmer music in the Bay Area and has been featured in concerts, festivals, dance workshops, parties, weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs.

The band was recently honored with Proclamations from the cities of Berkeley and Albany for its contributions to the community, and won Best Civilian Band in the City of Alameda parade. Band members include Helen Placourakis, violin; Jim Rebhan, accordion; Carol Ginsburg, flute and vocals; Josh Cohen, bass and violin; and some surprise guests!

Advanced Balkan Class, November 15

Come and join us Sunday, November 15 at 2:00 pm for the next Advanced Balkan
Class at Ashkenaz.

Dan Unger will be teaching the classic (and challenging) dance Bistriska
Kopanica and the individual dance Dzinovsko. Both are Bulgarian. Both are
great dances. Bistriska is a belt dance, please bring a belt.

This is a friendly, non-judgmental class-come and learn some good dances
dancing with like minded people. A few years dancing experience is
recommended.

We dance in the Back Dance Studio, left side door at Ashkenaz, 1317 San
Pablo Avenue, Berkeley. Please be on time as we start right out.

Da Mozhem and Born to Drone will be playing and singing for your dancing
pleasure at Cabrillo College on Friday, November 20, 2009.

Doors open 7:30, music starts at 8:00. COST for live music night:
$10.00 plus $$ for the tip basket.

BRING SNACKS TO SHARE--sweet, salty, or savory, but please, nothing
requiring plates and utensils. There are no kitchen facilities or
cleanup services.

Parking is FREE in the lot at night. It isn't necessary to purchase a
ticket.

Directions from Santa Cruz:
Take the Park Ave (Capitola) exit and turn left on Park. Go uphill to
Soquel Drive, and turn right on Soquel. Stay in the right lane. The
Cabrillo Gym complex is just past the second signal intersection
(Cabrillo College Drive). Stay on Soquel Drive and turn right at the
next parking lot, after you pass under the pedestrian bridge. The dance
studio is at the northwest corner of the building, overlooking the
intersection of Soquel & Cabrillo College Drive.

Room 1117 is on the northwest (upper left) corner of the Gymnasium

"Da! Mozhem" means "Yes! We can" in Bulgarian. Members are: John Burke,
Joyce Clyde, Alan Moore, Barbara Saxton, Ginny Snyder, Rich Tucker, and
Shannon Wells. In addition, Da! Mozhem will feature Sue Curkov of Novi
Stari Tamburasi on prim, the Croatian equivalent of a mandolin.

Born to Drone Members are: Jeanne Benioff (Director), Leslie Keenan,
Heather Meeker, Barbara Saxton, Mary Tusa, and Nettie Wijsman. Born
to Drone is a women's vocal ensemble specializing in folk music from the
Balkan region and beyond. They will be joined by talented musicians, Ian
and David Saxton.
