November 22 Berkeley House Concert: Classical Persian Kamanche and Tombak

A rare opportunity not to be missed! Iranian musicians Saeed Kamjoo and Arjang Faramazi perform at an intimate house concert Sunday, November 22..

Saeed Kamjoo: Kamanche (Persian spike fiddle)
Arjang Faramarzi: Tombak (Persian goblet drum)

Saeed Kamjoo started studying kamanche at the age of seventeen with Ardeshir Kâmkâr, and furthered his under the guidance of masters Ali Akbar Shekârchi and Ustad Asghar Bahâri. He is also a graduate of the School of Fine Arts from Tehran University. His approach to playing kamanche is based on his perception of the values inherent in classical Persian music. Kamjoo's style of playing kamanche combines creativity and authenticity with innovation. A founding member of the Namad Ensemble, Kamjoo has also performed as a guest artist with Dastan Ensemble, one of the most renowned Persian musical groups.

Arjang Faramarzi began playing tombak at the age of eleven under the supervision of late Master Naser Farhangfar, the poet and the genius in tombak, at Zoroastrian Youths Organization (Faravahar). Faramarzi has cooperated with and participated in various musical groups and ensembles with which he has performed many concerts around the world, including the internationally renowned Mastan Ensemble, led by singer Parvaz Homay.

Singing opportunities in Los Angeles area??

I taught dance and a singing class at Camp Hess Kramar in Malibu this weekend. Some of the students were interested in singing for fun on a more regular basis. Are there any informal groups doing singing in the Los Angeles area? Anyone interested in starting one? Any ideas?

We are doing it for all the people who were not able to come to the HANG

GreekFeet is pleased to have Joe join us again for a 2-hour Greek Dance Workshop. After class, we will go to a local restaurant for some chat, food and drink. All level of dancers are welcome.

Joe Kaloyanides Graziosi is one of the most respected authorities on Greek dance in the U.S. He continues to do extensive independent research in folk music and dance in Greece and the Greek-American communities. Joe teaches traditional folk and urban dances of Greece for various organizations, including major dance camps, weekend seminars, and retreats for both professional and amateur dance troupes as well as social clubs, community and church groups, and folk dance organizations all over the United States and abroad. He has been a much sought-after resource by dance group directors and has served as judge and advisor for the annual West Coast Greek Orthodox Folk Dance Festival since 1984 and the Hellenic Dance Festival competition since 2002. He has compiled an exhaustive library of scholarly research as well as a comprehensive video library and musical archive. Joe has produced numerous anthology CDs of dances from recorded sources not widely available in the U.S., which he makes available to his classes. He is also the co-founder and co-director of the annual World Music and Dance Camp in Cape Cod.

Agapi Mou ("my love") in Greek, is the newest project from violinist and vocalist Aya Davidson and clarinetist Greg Jenkins. The band's focus is Greek music, but also plays music from the Albanian, Turkish, Armenian, and Romani traditions. The band also features Alan Davidson on laouto and Michael Garibaldi on percussion. Berkeley's own Agapi Mou has played for dancers and listeners throughout the Bay Area and is happy to return to Le Bateau Ivre .

UC Berkeley Folkdance Reunion this Sunday, November 1st. 1:30-5:30pm, $7

The Helladelics are playing this Wednesday, November 4th. Showtime
8:30pm, $10.

Then on Saturday November 7th, Westwind Int'l Folk Ensemble is
celebrating their 50th ANNIVERSARY!
Music includes: Danubius w/ Barbara Deutsch, Rick & Terri's Contra Dance
Band, Wan-Chao Change, Vladimir Riazantsev, Rotrease Yates and Brook
Byrne! Norma Adjmi will MC the event.
7pm dance lesson with Sani Rafiti, Showtime 8pm
