Buying a GNU+Linux netbook/notebookHi all,
Am looking for some where to buy a new netbook/notebook for use with GNU+Linux (current dev machine, Compaq 702EA intel atom is on last legs) Found only two shops doing sans-microsoft laptops, linux emporium, and novatech. All of those on offer are pretty heavy, or netbooks from old gen intel atom with only 1GB RAM etc. Looking around, my current short list from regular retailers is: Samsung X125 11 inch Asus Eee PC 1215N 12 inch Asus Eee PC 1201N 12 inch HP Pavilion dv2-1127ea 12 inch Reading online sounds like Asus don't bother supporting linux kernel drivers anymore, so i may avoid them. Anyone have any tips!? Please reply ASAP if comments, as VAT is going up so I only have 22 hours left to order! Cheers, Jon _______________________________________________ Fsfe-uk mailing list Fsfe-uk@... http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/fsfe-uk |

I went with Acer 3820T (13" notebook, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD), ~6hr battery, 1.8KG in the end. Would be interesting to hear what other hardware "listers" run their GNU+Linux distributions on too. Any running ARM or MIPS based machines etc? Best regards, Jon _______________________________________________ Fsfe-uk mailing list Fsfe-uk@... http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/fsfe-uk |

Historical note: efficientpc.co.uk used to sell good GNU/Linux only machines and peripherals, but they ceased trading as they concluded that their job was done and GNU/Linux was available sufficiently widely for their services to no longer be necessary. I think probably we need to see companies doing 50+ machine orders from the likes of Dell UK to see some more model variety (and being able to buy without Windows7 pre-installed) http://www.dell.co.uk/ubuntu The prices aren't that bad: Dell Studio XPS 7100 Desktop £349 Athlon II X4 630 (2.8GHz),2GB RAM, 320GB HD Dell Inspiron 15R Laptop Intel i3 2.4Ghz 3GB RAM, 25GB HD £399 The main prob is no customisations of the laptop.. I recommend refurbished hardware via greenh.co.uk I got my Thinkpad x60s via them and it's been nothing but awesome. There's more to them than the web page makes out (so drop them an email) and the customer service has been well worth it for me. Thinkpads are generally awesome. _______________________________________________ Fsfe-uk mailing list Fsfe-uk@... http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/fsfe-uk |
