CDROM not accessible

On an IBM Thinkpad 9547U9C with a Sanyo CRD-S58P CDROM, somehow the
CDROM no longer is accessible. Device Manager shows it OK with no problems.
Any CD placed in the drive is not accessible. It's running Windows 2000 Beta 3.

Already tried booting from a Win95 startup disk, & upon entering D:, it does
go to the D: drive, but any other command gives "Abort, Retry, Fail".

Anyone have any ideas???
