CF Requirements: 5) Essential FucntionsGENI Control Framework WG Members, and Ted Faber of USC/ISI,
A first DRAFT (v01.3) of the GENI Control Framework Requirements document has been completed, and can be found at http://groups.geni.net/geni/wiki/GeniControlFrameworkRequirements A discussion of the document on February 25, 2009 resulted in the identification of 10 discussion items, which can be found at http://groups.geni.net/geni/attachment/wiki/GeniControlFrameworkRequir ements/030609_CFRequireReviewTopics.pdf This email begins a discussion thread on: 5) Essential Functions I would like to invite Ted Faber of USC/ISI to begin the discussion, and then others are invited to join in. 5a) In his written comments on the document, Ted indicated that the document should be much more focused on functional requirements. On the call, we discussed that we should consider carefully which functions are "essential" and which are "extended". It was agreed that the essential functions required of a CF in a GENI suite included more than just resource acquisition. 5b) The current DRAFT of the CF Requirements document does present a set of required functions; see particularly Sections 5.5 through 5.6, and also through 5.10. But, which functions are essential and which are extended? Here is a list that follows the sections, and a proposed classification. (By the way it is written, the document indicates that all are "essential".) 5.5.1 Resource and Topology Discovery Essential 5.5.2 Resource Sharing (virtualization) Essential 5.5.3 Resource Authorization and Policy Implementation Essential 5.5.4 Resource Assignment Essential 5.5.5 Component Programming Essential 5.5.6 Disconnected Operation of Components Essential 5.5.7 Disconnected Operation of Researchers Essential 5.5.8 Resource to Resource Connections Essential (getting two aggregates to connect) 5.5.9 Setup Verification Extended 5.6.1 Experiment and Sliver Control Essential 5.6.2 Experiment Data Collection and Management Essential 5.6.3 Forensic and Usage Data Collection and Management Essential 5.6.4 Experiment Status Events and Notifications Extended 5.6.5 Experiment Status Commands and Responses Essential (emergency slice shutdown) 5.7.1 Federated Aggregates Essential 5.7.2 Federated Suites Essential 5.8 Reliable Operation with High Availability (with parameters) Extended 5.9 Responsive Operation (with parameters) Extended 5c) Do we have the right list of essential functions? Is there an identifiable "essence" of each essential function? We look forward to a continuing, lively discussion, working towards a 'rough consensus". Harry E.
