CFD: Source URL keywordCall for Discussion
Source URL keyword ftp://ftp.simplesystems.org/pub/png-group/documents/ Source_URL_keyword_20080905.txt Glenn Randers-Pehrson <glennrp at gmail.com> This starts a two-week discussion period on a proposed "Source URL" keyword (the "Source web page" proposal is withdrawn). Here is the proposal, which is very similar to the failed "Source URI" proposal: File: Source_URL_keyword_20080905.txt It is proposed to register the following new text keyword for use in PNG files: Source URL If the image was produced by rendering a single URL the text portion of this chunk contains a URL identifying that web page, as defined by [RFC 3986|http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3986] Glenn ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK & win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100&url=/ _______________________________________________ png-mng-misc mailing list png-mng-misc@... https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/png-mng-misc |

Extension to "Source URN" is fairly obvious, and I guess the distinction is useful because it's difficult to know if a URL is also a URN (i.e. whether it is guaranteed not to change with time.) Likewise, and indeed; "Source UR[NIL]" is generative, at least of the other two possibilities. While some application writers might use "Source URL" for a URN which does not allow the resource to be located the error is, IMO, harmless since many URLs are actually unreliable locators. The key is to register one then application writers will actually use it, just as they use Software today. (Like Source URL "Software" is something which the application knows itself, rather than something like Author or Copyright which requires externally provided information.)
