Linked Data is now here! In the past two years, the amount of data published in RDF and following the Linked Data principles has increased dramatically. Everyday people are publishing data sets as Linked Data. However, applications that consume and make use of Linked Data are not mainstream yet.
 
Technological building blocks to make use of Linked Data are in place (Sindice, SQUIN, Virtuoso, etc). It is now time to show off and develop new applications which add new functionality to the Web, that could not be done before a Linked Data era.

The Linked Data-a-thon will consist of a two day event that will unite Linked Data practitioners in order to create "quick and dirty" innovative applications that make use of Linked Data. This event is open to anybody in academia or industry. The authors of the best applications will be awarded prizes and featured at a special sessions during the ISWC 2009 conference.

Goal

The overall goal of this event is to

1. Create a Linked Data application that shows innovative and new functionality
2. Show that a "quick and dirty" Linked Data application can be developed in 2 days
   

Minimum Requirements

1. The application needs to be developed on site during October 25 and 26. The final submission needs to turned in on October 26 at 6:00pm local time.
2. Individuals or groups can participate. However, everybody must be at the venue.
3. Groups can be maximum 4 people
   
4. The data sources need to be in Linked Data
   
5. The data sources need to heterogeneous
6. The data sources need to be real world data
7. The application needs to show an innovative functionality.
   

Desirable Features

1. The application has end-user value
2. The application has commercial potential
3. Show how Linked Data can solve a practical business problem
4. The applications is dynamic and shows unexpected reuse of linked data through automatic discovery
5. The judges will be announcing a surprise theme at the conference 

How to participate

Visit www.linkeddata-a-thon.com and add your name to the wiki. If you know beforehand that you would like to form a group and all the members of your group are going to be attending the Linked Data-a-thon, you can add your group. You do not have to publish the application/idea that you will pursue to develop. However, if you are looking for people to join your group, you may use the wiki for this.

Prizes

• $800 USD and 4 registrations to Semantic Technology Conference 2010

• $400 USD in Amazon Voucher
• $200 USD in Amazon Voucher

The winners will be asked to give a live demo at the Linked Data-a-thon session during ISWC 2009 conference on Wednesday October 28 at 6:30pm.
