CSGStandard Mozart: Oboe Concerto

I'm no expert, but from Wikipedia's page on Mozart's Oboe concerto it would appear it was written for oboe and later reworked for flute:

The Flute Concerto No. 2 in D Major is an adaptation of the original oboe concerto. Dutch flautist Ferdinand De Jean (1731-1797) commissioned Mozart for four flute quartets and three flute concerti; which Mozart only completed three quartets and only one new flute concerto. Instead of creating a new second concerto, Mozart rearranged the oboe concerto he had written a year earlier as the second flute concerto, although with substantial changes to it to fit what the composer deemed flute-like.

But the CSGStandard page lists:

Concerto for Flute (on Oboe) No. 2 in D major, K. 285d/314: I. Allegro aperto

Does anyone know something I don't? Or oppose me changing it? (BrianFreud, I'm looking at you. :)

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Just checking The Compleat Mozart (Zaslaw), K. 271k was written for specifically for oboe, then K. 285d was an arrangement of 271k, specifically for flute.  So 271k is the oboe one, 285d is the flute one - and in the line you've quoted from the listing, you have the oddball bit where a work for oboe, then arranged for flute, is now being played...  on an oboe.  So no, I wouldn't change the listing for 285d, unless it was simply to remove the "(on Oboe)" bit.

That aside though, you'd likely have problems changing anything on that page.  There's a few typos, omissions, etc that have been mentioned to me, but I've not been able to edit it since the wiki-switchover; the new wiki software seems to throw a fit about the page's size, and won't save any changes to that page.  I've just been holding out for Works, so that page can begin migrating  out of the wiki entirely.

Ah, okay. The problem is that there's no listing of the original concerto for oboe—the only reference to 271k is "Double Listed Work: K. 271k is actually K. 314."

Yes, that's right; I had the same problem. I'll just make manual changes in the meantime.

Incidentally, I've come across a lot of mistakes: this question came up from a recording of the two flute concertos, so for this particular instance it's wrong. Good thing I have the recording and know that. :)

Cheers,
Andrew

Yeah, that particular work gets rather confusing - the one movement exists, for oboe, as the earlier numbered one, then it (now for flute) plus new movements makes up the latter work - or at least, that's the current belief.  Iirc, that flute movement of KV 314 used to be somewhat debated as to just what/when it was, hence just the one movement moving from 314 in K6, vs the other movements which moved to yet different K6 numbers.

No problem; I'm sure there's plenty of typos still in there, esp in the top list, which hasn't had the same degree of double checking as the other (the bottom list I'd gone through the scores at NMA, one by one, to check for any typos I could find).  A good number of what would appear to be mistakes (esp re: instrumentation) aren't, though - they're in the Anh B list, which isn't up on the CSGMozart page; I'd not managed to get a useable copy of that one until 6 months ago or so.  When we have works, I'll add that listing.  :)

Cheers,
Andrew
