Call for Nominations for Community Council Election

All:

A new election cycle for the Community Council begins now. We, the  
Council members, hope that we can meet the new members in Orvieto,  
Italy, at OOoCon 2009 early this November. To do that, however, we may  
have to bend the timing rules a little and accelerate things when  
possible.  But for now.....

This election cycle inaugurates a new Community Council. Not only will  
we have one more member (to 10) but what we do has changed over the  
year and we have now a greater ability to promote OpenOffice.org  
around the world. Being part of the Council is to be part of the  
governing board of what is widely understood to be one of the most  
important Free and Open Source Software projects in the world. We urge  
you to join us.

On behalf of the Community Council, I would like to announce the new  
round of elections for the Council and start the process by asking the OpenOffice.org
  Community members to nominate those they think would best contribute  
both to the Council and to the OpenOffice.org Community.

You may nominate yourself. We define membership in our Guidelines. [0]  
This election cycle, one of several, begins with this call for  
nominations. After a week, candidates will present themselves and then  
we will vote. We detail all this in the Election Process wiki.

**About the Council**

The Council is our governing board and among other things, it helps  
resolve conflict among projects and people and develop guidelines for  
the smooth operation and growth of the Community. Our charter explains  
what we can and cannot do.[1] The current members are lighted on the  
Council's home page. [2]

Until now, the Council's work has been fairly quiet and its scope  
limited. But as the OOo project has matured and grown, our focus has  
evolved. For instance, we now have in place procedures for budgeting  
and allocating funds for a variety of Community-sponsored events and  
doings. (These funds derive from donations given by users as they  
download OpenOffice.org or otherwise independent expressions of  
support and satisfaction; the funds are the Community's, held in trust  
by the Council.)

For this cycle, two standing Council members need to be replaced and  
one fresh member to be elected.

* Sophie Gautier and André Schnabel, both exemplary contributors to  
the Project and Council and members of OpenOffice.org almost since its  
inception, have resigned, effective upon their replacement. I do not  
think that we, the Council and the Community, can thank them enough  
for their achievements in makingOpenOffice.org the community and  
global force that it is. My thanks to them both.


**Rules**

The rules for the process are detailed in a wiki on the subject. [3]  
This election inaugurates a new Council, as the number of members has  
changed, from nine to ten, as has their characterization.

Several categories of OpenOffice.org contributors make up the Council  
membership. Those categories cover the breadth of OpenOffice.org. All  
but one, the permanent Sun representative, are elected by community  
vote. In this cycle, one of the Native Language Confederation  
Representative (aka "Lang") seats (there are two) is up for election.  
As well, we are asking for nominations for one Code Contributor  
Representative and one Product Development Representative.

** The point of the categories of representatives is to ensure that  
the breadth of OpenOffice.org is represented and that its key  
constituencies find a voice on the Council. We are not saying nor do  
we wish to imply that you can only nominate and vote for someone in  
your constituency. Rather, we hope and anticipate that the work done  
by developers, marketers, translators, document writers, localizers,  
business people and so many of the other contributors constituting our  
varied constituencies is represented on the Council. We will thus  
strive to promote the election process on the relevant public lists,  
as I detail below.**

The nomination process starts now and ends 20 October (24:00 UTC).  
Nominations and the attendant discussions should be conducted on  
popular public lists, such as discuss@...,  
dev@... and so on.

We will be using tried and true technology for the actual voting: the  
Survey machine; only Community Members will be allowed to vote.  
Results will be posted in accordance with the published Election  
Process; the address will be on the Council wiki, as well as sent to  
the various lists below.

The details for the process demand attention and we ask that you spend  
some time going over the Election Process wiki.

* As I mentioned above, we are hoping to conclude this cycle by early  
November. That will mean shortening part of the process a little, but  
which part has not been determined yet. If we cannot shorten the  
process and still keep everything satisfactory, then we won't.

* Note: We have yet to identify our observers but for the purposes of

I would like to nominate Eric Bachard (ericb) for code contributor
representative as a member of the education project he has done a
remarkable job getting involved with students that want to contribute
to the core of OpenOffice.org and also give the "classrooms" where
experts in OOo give talks about coding for the people that want to
learn the technical specifics of OpenOffice.org. Also is enterprising
with his organizations such as OOEduc the OOo4Kids project which is
basically a most needed in the education market. He would be a big
asset to the CC in moving to growing the developers which is most
needed by this project.

I would also like to nominate myself for product development, being
the lead of several products including the newly created certification
project, bizdev project and OpenOffice.org ES (spanish) project as
well as co-leading the education project. I have the experience in the
community and network to guide and contribute even more to this
project with a good understanding of the current goals for many of
these projects and more.

Finally for language a +1 to Charles Schulz.

I would like to nominate Juergen Schmidt as candidate for the Community
Council.
Juergen is well known as lead of the API project (and co-lead before)
and in that position promoting the importance of more intuitive and
better APIs among the developers. He worked on the UNO, SDK and DevGuide.
He also is co-lead of the extensions project from the beginning. This
project is an important bridge to many, often non-corporate, developers
and contributors for the project.
Juergen also makes valuable contributions to the marketing project, for
example with organising the OpenOffice.org contribution for the FOSDEM
and promotional goods... T-shirts :-)
He is active at various levels in the project and whenever time allows,
with an open mind to reach out. I consider this very useful for a
position in the council, therefore I hope Juergen that will accept this
nomination.

Looking at his background, the Code Contributor as well as the Product
Development seat could be his place in the Community Council for the
next years.

Hi *,

I'd like to nominate Christoph Noack for the seat of the "Product
Development Representative".

Many of you might know Christoph as CoLead of the ux-project. Not only
that Christoph was one of the people who got the UX project running and
evolving, man machine interaction is his profession and passion.

This is (imo) a perfect precondition for the "Product Development" seat,
as this means to understand the user's needs at the one hand and build a
bridge to the developer's expertise at the other.  No doubt - this means
to deal with controversal issues in many cases (just think of such
topics as Project Renaissance). I know Christoph as a person, who is
able to find and communicate compromises in such situations - a very
useful character trait for a council member.

Another reason for me to nominate Christoph, is the way he interacts
with other projects. The OpenOffice.org project is not allone in the
world of Open Source Software. There are other projects, that have very
similar goals and problems - I know, that Christoph has contacts to many
of these projects. (Not only for having contacts, but also to work and
exchange knowledge.)


Ok .. words enough - I'm looking forward to the elections ;)

community - and would like to contribute my part to it.

Thank you very much, for thinking to me, but I'd like to clarifythe
situation, before serious things start : I'm not candidate and I prefer
continue to work on one thing only : make the Education Project
stronger, e.g. improving OOo4Kids (basically thought for students, to
hack OOo) and more.

The Education challenge is one of the most important OpenOffice.org
Project ever, and until we have something better, that's my only goal.

Great to read this - there are few people I know with your aptitudes in
the OOo project.

You have already shown your dedication to the community - if anybody
here didn't know:

As co-lead of the UX project he's is a binding link
between the people at Sun and people inside and outside the community.
Even for people, who comment quite harsh on the Renaissance work.

Being polite and clear at the same time he managed to invite some of the
main critics to the project's lists, where their fears are heard and
compromises are searched (and found).

One additional point: As "spare time volunteer" he is not involved in
any hierarchy or internal decision processes at Sun. But in his position
as UX co-lead he has personal connections to a quite a number of people
at Sun involved in implementing modifications and improvements in
OpenOffice.org.

He is respected from developers as well as from members of other
community areas as a person finding solutions in difficult discussions,
calm down and integrate where opposite ideas might separate people from
each other.

In my eyes a "Product Development Representative" should not only be
involved in product development but have a broader look over the product
and the way it should be developed in future. Christoph seems to be the
perfect choice for me: Besides his communication and moderation skills
he doesn't only combine the developer's and the other community member's
view as User Experience expert, but knows better than most of us what
our user do with our product and where it should be improved.

So I'm very glad to see this nomination.

Hi,

first of all thank you Cor for your trust in me that i would be an
eligible candidate.

I needed some days to think about the nomination to be sure that i am
motivated, have the time and that i have the open and global view on the
project that is necessary. And what is more important from my point of
view that i have a realistic view because the work in all the different
areas have to be done. Talking only is not enough. And the heart is
still the product itself. A good product that we can promote, where we
can do marketing for, that we can localize to reach even more people,
that we can customize to reach other user groups like OOo4Kids, and that
we can always improve to make it the best office suite of choice.

I know the project very well because i know it before it was born ;-)
And the reason why i still work full time on the project is the project
  self. Ok Sun as a good employer is a further very important point here
as well.

My the potential CC work would i do in my spare time because it
wouldn't be part of my normal work. You see there is no real difference
to any other candidate ;-)

I am not looking for a further position or so, i am already the project
lead of the API and Extensions project (but project lead positions are
not really important from my point of view). But i am always motivated
to improve things where i have the impression that things can be
improved. And that is the reason why i accept the nomination.

It's up to others now to vote for me or not. I am at least willing to do
my best.

Hi,

just a question :

In the first pahsis of the process, Alexandro Colorado nominateed me,  
for the Code representative seat. What I refused, for good personal  
reasons, i.e. I'm not candidate.

And in the list Louis published, I don't see I was nominated at all.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I see a difference between a  
nominee (can be proposed without being informed if not subscribed the  
right list) , and a candidate, who activaly accepted.


I think what will be retained is not what really happened, and I  
think this is not respecftull for Alexandro and me, and worse, does  
not provide a good image ot your 'elections process'.

There is a difference - yes, but for the election process this does not
matter. You will not be on the list of candidates. (The nomination is
just invalid.)

The process proposal clearly states,that a candidate needs to agree to
the nomination. In case he does not,it is the responsibility of the
organization team to request this confirmation (as we did in case of
Jürgen).
You actively rejected - so it is clead that you do not want to be nominated.

I don't get your point - really. Interested people already know the
story,as it was spread through a number of public mailing lists.

You always disagree with my point of view, I know, but that's not the  
point. The point is the process must respect people, and my feeling  
is, this is not the case.
But you are right to talk about a story, when I see how many time it  
took to organize these elections :-)

I surely do not *always*  disagree to your point of view. I fact I even
often agreed and tried present your point to other people.

Sentences like you just wrote show deepest disrespect for other people
(me in this case).

Everybody is free to organize the elections - as long as she will follow
the rules. The council is responsible to define the rules and make sure
the rules are followed. This does not mean that council members need to
do all the administrative tasks. Everybody is free to ask, if he can
take this tasks. (I never saw anybody doing this - and the call for
observers I once did, was only answered by two non-council-members.)
Ok, I can accept thatnotmany peoplehave the timeto organizeand run
elections.

Anyway - it's nice to see, that you have the time to point to problems
in the process (if your person is affected).

There are more candidates asked for nominatiton than published at the lists.

They are asked *before* publishing it to the lists.
