Cam Grinder A bit off topic

I know this sounds a bit of an overkill but I'm thinking of making a cam grinder. I am tired of being nice to the CAM grinders with my one off never to be repeated jobs and then getting back something I'm not really sure is what I wanted.

I have a spare CNC lathe, reasonable size, 6 hp motor 200 mm chuck and about 700kg worth. It had an old Anilam controller on it which I will replace with Mach3, or TurboCNC.

The original encoders read to .002 mm on radius so this should be accurate enough. I will replace the spindle drive with a large stepper or servo which will then give me a '3' axis lathe. X Y and rotation.

I will remove the toolpost changer and fit a grinder and should be set to go. Only issue is keeping the backlash low.

A piece of CNC equipment we designed and built.

Imagine this, a run on the dyno (I have one in my shed) grind a new cam try again and then in for a quick cuppa of morning tea !!!

PS my dyno is a 2.4 m 600 mm diameter roller that cam from a cardboard making machine. Weighs about 700 kg. (Cost me $60 with end supports and bearings)

NO overkill :-)

Look for a ballscrew, they are mostly free of backlash, and drive it directly (or vs. a timing belt) with a stepper motor.

Yeeah, my dream.(except the tea: I prefer half a liter of morning cappucino ..)

#§$%&§ I'm looking exactly for a thing like that since several years...

Wouldn't you need a 45year old german mechanic/toolmaker over there?
I could take my family with, two adult children, no dog... :-)

Cheers,
Hans

No Hans, no dog, no invitation.

Just to fill you in, we live on 7 acres, 18 minutes from ctr of town. (about 1/2 million people) We have 8 cows, 4 sheep, 3 dogs, 1 cat, 3 chickens and we have finally got rid of the angora goats, ducks and guinea fowl. We have a home made milking machine and I can now deliver lambs and goat kids.

So on this one property you can hear mooing, bleeting, barking, clucking, puring, meowing, sucking (from the milking machine, wizzing from the CNC machines, reving from the dyno, roaring from the DIY used engine oil burner, chugging from the tractor,  and of course moaning from the wife !!!

Man this is a change from my previous life in IT....

Cheers Wallace

Hi Bernie,

Bavaria, near the alps. No own house,(unaffordable) 1 cat, 2 rabbits, also 1 loving wife, 2 children, 18 and 16 years old, only 1/20 of an acre (small garden) 1 garage pressed full with bikes. For a championship my riding skills are underdevelopped, the other riders are much faster than me. But I always had more fun on testing selfmade cams. 8-)

@wallace
My next vacation should go to NZ or AUS. Best time would be, when (probably)all kiwis and aussies are in Munich: Oktoberfest :-)

Cheers,
Hasn

Thanks Guy

Great picture and some real data shown.

AG Bell has a few graphs in his book on cam velocity, acc and displacement. I used the figures off the graphs in a spreadsheet and could not get anything to work propoerly. They must have been hand drawn.

I'll try the data on the webpage.

Cheers Wallace.
