Camping nights awards?Hi All,
I know that this is not a TM-specific question, but I know that there is a lot of expertise on this list, and many of you are very willing to share your opinions! I am responsible for keeping track of nights camped for our scouts, as well as for the adults in the troop. We present awards at 25 nights, 50 nights, etc. The nights must be under the stars or in tents. We also allow new Scouts to include nights camped as Webelos Scouts, but not Cub Scouts. This is the way we do it, and I have always taken guidance from our existing leadership. My questions to you all are: - is this standard BSA policy? - is this the way other troops handle this? - is there a national policy? I looked but could not find anything... - do others include Webelos camping? - do others include Cub camping? Thanks! Jim |

Re: Camping nights awards?Jim,
I think what you will find is that awards like the camping awards are meant for Boy scouts, which means any camping that has been done as a WEBELOS scout goes toward their activity pins, and not Boy Scouting Awards. http://www.boyscouttrail.com/content/award/national_camping-874.asp Has the exact requirements for the badge. In our troop, any Cub Scout related camping does to travel over to Boy Scouting. I don't think when you incorporate the packmaster files into troopmaster it moves camping over either. Re: Camping nights awards?Sounds like a troop policy. I've not heard of anything in BSA like this, but I don't know everything. We only track camping nights for rank requirements & Camping merit badge. Are the awards from council or district?

Re: Camping nights awards? My wife is the Advancement Chair for our troop, and here is the reason
we don't count camping nights as a WEBELOS scout. She also mentions that the requirements are required to be followed, no more - no less. Understand, I do not want to nit pick - however, I am quoting requirements the scouts must follow. *Tenderfoot Requirement #2: *Spend at least one night on a patrol or troop campout. Sleep in a tent you have helped pitch. *Second Class Requirement #2a:* Since joining, have participated in five separate troop/patrol activities (other than troop/patrol meetings), two of which included camping overnight. *First Class Requirement #3:* Since joining, have participated in ten separate troop/patrol activities (other than troop/patrol meetings), three of which included camping overnight. This means that camping as a webelos scout does not count toward any rank requirements. *Camping Merit Badge #7: *Prepare for an overnight campout with your patrol by doing the following: *Camping Merit Badge #9:* Show experience in camping by doing the following: Camp a total of at least 20 days and 20 nights. Sleep each night under the sky or in a tent you have pitched. The 20 days and 20 nights must be at a designated Scouting activity or event... In order to work on Merit Badges such as these, it is required that we follow age appropriate guidelines. Which means, that Webelos camping with a troop does not count toward any Boy Scouting awards, but only for the Webelos and Arrow of Light Awards, but are not to be counted toward that if they are used for the outdoors man activity award.. The Arrow of Light Requirements are very specific: Participate in a Webelos overnight campout or day hike.(If you have already done this when you earned your Outdoorsman activity badge, you may not use it to fulfill requirements for your Arrow of Light Award requirements.) Once they have reached the age of 11, they are now in the Boy Scout Program, and because of that, they are required to follow the Boy Scout program and perform as a Boy Scout. No more, no less. As far as counting them toward Order of the Arrow, all camping must be done as a Boy Scout aged 11-17. Matt |

RE: Camping nights awards? There are no Official Boy Scout awards for 25 nights camping and so forth, so this sounds like a Troop policy. The nice thing about scouting is if you want to create your own awards, you can also make the rules for it. There are no right or wrong answers, just have fun and honor the boys who meet or exceed your expectations.

What is being referenced is the National Camping Awards that is available through the BSA. Re: Camping nights awards? From Jan/Mar 2008 scouting Magazine:
Troops can earn the National Camping Award Boys join Scouting to go camping and have fun with their friends, and boys stay in troops that go camping. BSA research has proven that troops that camp monthly are larger and retain more boys than troops that don’t camp monthly. The BSA’s National Camping Award recognizes troops that deliver a year-round camping program to their members. It is available for two levels: annual camping and cumulative camping. * The annual National Camping Award, a green ribbon for troop flags, is available in four categories: 10 days and nights—Unit Award; 20 days and nights—Bronze Award; 30 days and nights—Silver Award; 50 days and nights—Gold Award. The year for earning the annual award may be a calendar year, charter year, or any 12-month period that best serves the troop’s program goals, as determined by the troop’s patrol leaders’ council. Summer camp, district camporees, and weekend camp-outs are all included in a troop’s total days and nights camped in a year. As explained in the application form, at least 50 percent of members must attend summer camp and at least 33 percent must attend weekend camp-outs, to count toward the award. * The cumulative National Camping Award (a white ribbon for troop flags) has four categories for all camping done since Jan. 1, 1999: 100 days and nights—Unit Award; 250 days and nights—Bronze Award; 500 days and nights—Silver Award; 1,000 days and nights—Gold Award. * In troops that earn the National Camping Award, individual National Camping Award patches are available for Scouts and leaders. Camp-outs with patrols, families, or other groups can be counted when qualifying for the individual award. The award application, “Our Camping Log” (BSA No. 33690A), includes requirements, suggestions for planning an effective outdoor program, a chart for tracking individual troop member camping records, and a form (which must be signed by the district camping chairman or unit commissioner, Scoutmaster, and senior patrol leader) for submitting to the council camping committee when an award level has been reached. RE: Camping nights awards?Matt,
Not as I read the original email. He specifically mentions 25 and 50 nights. The National Camping Award is for the units and it is set up for 10, 20, 30 and 50 nights and cumulative Award for 100, 250, 500 and 1000. (These are unit nights in a single year). Individual scouts and scouters can also qualify for a patch at 100, 250, 500 and 1000 days. None of these numbers correspond to numbers that Jim suggested in his original post, so I guess it is up to him to tell us if he was talking about the National Camping Award or not. (These are individual, but don’t begin until 100). Further, if you make the assumption that he was talking about the National Camping Award and you look at it on the first link that you put in your email…. http://www.boyscouttrail.com/content/award/national_camping-874.asp The first two lines says it all…. “This Award is meant for Boy Scouts. Decide for yourself if it is appropriate for your younger scouts or not.” The way that you count days is left up to the unit. If my unit decides to count days that Cubs or Webelos go with the Troop, that is correct. If my unit decides that we will not count days that Cubs or Webelos go with the Troop, that is correct too. I would suggest that if Webelos have multiple choices in Boy Scout Troops , that how the Troop counts these days and nights, it might make weigh in the decision where the boys camp. Re: Camping nights awards?Hey Tom,
The National Camping Sheets that you can print out paint an even more confusing picture on this award. I will see the Council honcho tomorrow and ask her about it to gain some clarity. Our Troop does not count any outings or camping trips that are performed for Cub Ranks with the troop, however, for this award, all of the camping counts so it looks. Thanks for pointing that out Tom! Matt Thomas A Newman wrote: > > > Matt, > > > > Not as I read the original email. He specifically mentions 25 and 50 > nights. Re: Camping nights awards?I would think that would be quite the rarity if a Cub had that many Days/Nights of camping, even throughout their whole Cub Scout tenure through Webelos.
Not many Packs do that many overnighters even in a year. But, I suppose, if they had, and they're entitled to the award also, then bravo! Re: Re: Camping nights awards?Just to clarify (sorry - I was out of town for
several days), this must be a troop-specific set of awards, as I can't find any reference to it elsewhere. BTW - we regularly get Cubs who have 10+ camping nights coming in, so it is significant, and does reward them for past activities. Thanks for all the input. RE: Re: Camping nights awards? It is up to you, but I say count them. It will encourage your Cubs to go camping, and a Cub Scout who camps will be a much better Boy Scout than a Cub Scout who thinks that scouting is just about Arts and Crafts.
