Can't boot the install CD on a *physical* machine.

Hi,

OK, it may be something local, but I've tested it on some four
different machines with the same result.

I cannot boot anymore the NetBSD-current (i386) install CD on a
physical machine.

The ISO file boots fine under VirtualBox.

And no, it is not a problem with the CD either - the physical CD also
boots fine under VirtualBox.

Same CD on a physical machine gives me either just the first line of
the message - and then waits forever - or a message that it cannot
read the CD.

This happens with both self-compiled 5.99.20 (and a few versions
earlier - the last one I was able to boot was AFAIR 5.99.15) and with
boot.iso downloaded this morning from releng.netbsd.org.

Any ideas?

Sorry, no idea, but same here since some time with amd64 isos: Written
to CD isos created from -current sources don't boot on any real hardware
(created the CDs on NetBSD and Solaris, used CDs from differend
manufacturers, tried booting on differend machines - doesn't matter).
Isos boot fine in VirtualBox or Vmware (not tried the pysical CDs).

No idea, but I just tried with an amd64 iso image created from sources
updated just a couple hours ago, and it fails on my system, too.

It gets as far as displaying the message

  NetBSD/x86 cd9660 Primary Bootstrap

and then it just sits there.

Whatever the problem it, it appears to be common to both i386 and amd64
ports.

That was the case on the two laptops I tried; on another couple of
machines it complained that the CD is not readable.

I cvs updated my tree this lunch time and rebuilt upto ISO for
5.99.21, which now happily boots on hardware. No other changes were
made, same spindle of crappy CD-Rs lying around for a few years, same
writer did the burning...

Here you are...

Updated a system (from 5.99.19 to 21) with no issues whatsoever from the CD.

See PR 42154 and 42202 for details.

To track problems, it's always a good thing to file a PR.

I don't think the bug is fixed.  Today I re-opened 42202 and set it to
'feedback'.

Today I cannot boot an ISO9660 image in QEMU or VMware ("The virtual
machine just suffered a stack fault in kernel mode.").  I have not tried
a real machine, yet.  I updated my sources yesterday.

QEMU enters this cycle:

qemu -cdrom alldevs-02-Nov-2009.iso -nographic -s -serial stdio

>> Memory: 639/130048 k

     1. Boot normally
     2. Boot single user
     3. Disable ACPI
     4. Disable ACPI and SMP
     5. Drop to boot prompt

Choose an option; RETURN for default; SPACE to stop countdown.
Option 1 will be chosen in 5 seconds.

Please don't reopen inappropriate one but file a new PR.

In the original PR, the problem is in bootxx_cd9660 and
even /boot was not loaded properly (and it worked on QEMU),
but in your case at least /boot is running.

Could you try boot.iso in daily snapshot?

How did you create your iso?

Let's leave the PR open.  It should not have been closed w/o feedback.

Now I have figured out what the problem was, and it had nothing to do w/
the bootloader, so there is no need to open a new PR.

Presumably, you're using i386? An ISO (burned to a CDRW) for 1 Nov -current
worked for me without problems.
