Can't copy DVD9

No problem to copy Hair which is also a DVD9.
Could somebody by so kind and look into the
script Il-Barbiere-di-Siviglia.bz2 attached
to this message in order to find out, if
possible, why `lxdvdrip -st=copy' does not
work here.
I've observed that the whole disk is perfectly
ripped, but at the end the main title gets lost.

Thank you in advance,
Harald Weis

When a script is failing, it helps to try to figure out at which step
it's failing. Is it not correctly extracting the video from the original
disc? Or is it not correctly building the copy?

The script (like the observation of the contents of /usr/local/tmp)
seems to show that copy-building does not work. But I am unable to
interpret all messages and to see when and why something goes wrong.
The bzip2-compressed script is attached to my original message.

Best regards
Harald

Does the extracted video look and play OK?

Yes, it does.
I just repeated the operation with `delete=0'.

I guess the next step, then, is to try to re-author the extracted video
into a new disc, and see at what point the operation fails.

I think I've understood what happens by running option -st=partcopy.
When I choose the two big titles (more or less corresponding to the
two acts of the opera) burning fails due to unsufficient disk capacity:
:-( /dev/pass0: 2297888 blocks are free, 2521934 to be written!

When running option -st=copy, the system cannot choose the longest
title because there are two very long files (see the first attached file)
and processes therefore the shortest one (logical :-))

I don't know why Title 03 (see the second attachment) ends up in two big
files.

Those two files are played alright with mplayer.
Question #1:
Is there a simple way to dvdauthor the 2 files seperately in order to
put them on 2 disks ? I've modified the dvdauthor.xml file without
success and I do not understand the error line when running
dvdauthor -o film-dvd/ -x dvdauthor.xml :
ERR:  Cannot parse audio option 'pcm '

Question #2:
lxdvdrip does not work for Dual Layer DVDs ?

Yup. Note that a DVD "block" or "sector" is 2048 bytes.

Files on a DVD-Video disc must be less than 1GiB in size. Could be
applicable here.

The dvdauthor XML file operates at a fairly low level. Not to mention
you'll need to rearrange the menus.

Is there a trailing space on the end of "pcm"? Try removing that.

I have used k9copy a few times to copy double-layer discs onto
single-layer ones. Maybe look at that instead?

Yes

Not wanting any menus, I left only the titleset of my choice in
dvdauthor.xml. Indeed, that does not seem to be allowed. `dvdauthor'
works fine (see attached file), but `growisofs' (or better `mkisofs')
is "Unable to make a DVD-Video image" without telling why :-(.
The presence of the dummy.xml file must have a good reason I suppose.
I fear it's too much work to learn how to edit dvdauthor.xml
without a good tutorial.

Yes, there is a space. But that seems to be bug. I am _not_ responsible
for that ! Removing it makes at least dvdauthor work.

Thank you for this hint. I will install k9copy to see whether it
can do the job.

Many thanks again for your kind help during such a long time.

Well, if that's all you need, I use the following Lua script to generate
the xml files I use. Just pipe in a list of .vob files like so:

ls *vob | mkxml > dvdauthor.xml

The resulting DVD will consist of a single title that starts playing
when the disc is inserted, runs through the vob files in the order they
were given to the script, and repeats at the end.

Lua can be found over at http://www.lua.org/, but it should be simple
enough to figure out what it's doing.

How does that handle blank lines? Here's a Python version that ignores them:

#!/usr/bin/python

import sys

sys.stdout.write \
   (
         "<dvdauthor>\n"
         "  <vmgm />\n"
         "  <titleset>\n"
         "    <titles>\n"
         "      <pgc>\n"
     +
         "".join
           (
             [
                     "        <vob file=\"%s\"/>\n"
                 %
                     line.rstrip("\n")
             for
                 line in sys.stdin if len(line.rstrip("\n")) != 0
             ]
           )
     +
         "        <post>\n"
         "          jump chapter 1;\n"
         "        </post>\n"
         "      </pgc>\n"
         "    </titles>\n"
         "  </titleset>\n"
         "</dvdauthor>\n"
   )

Bravo, bravissimo ! Mille merci.
I am very happy indeed.

I've used the python script, because python was already installed.
Lua seems to be light-weight and yet very powerful.
Now that I have understood the basics of dvdauthor.xml, I could
even write the script in Ruby, the only language I've used
in recent years from time to time.

Many thanks to both of you.
Harald
