Can't pass simple.world test: Launches Blank GUI and Sytem Locks Up

This is a continuation of:

http://www.nabble.com/Ubuntu-9.04%3A-Problems-Installing-Stage-3.2.0---can%27t-find-libstage.so.3.2.0-or--worlds-to25637180.html

Which has a title that doesn't have anything to do with the problem any more.

My Sytem is a Dell Optiplex GX240 using an ATI Rage 128 ULTRA Video Card. I've been able to install player 3.0.0 and stage 3.2.1 on a fresh ubuntu 9.04 install using these instructions:

http://www.control.aau.dk/~tb/wiki/index.php/Installing_Player_and_Stage_in_Ubuntu

I also tried re-installing ubuntu and just running the script there after running the update process and restarting but it didn't make a difference.

My problem is that when I run:

$ stage simple.world

It displays "Stage 3.2.1" (only a blank line after that) in the terminal and launches a grey frozen window and my system  locks up. Sometimes I get a mouse cursor that I can move around but everything else is frozen. I've left Stage "running" for at least 3 hours just to see if my system picks up but it hasn't.

I am able to run glxgears @ 300 fps if that means anything.

My VC is an ATI rage 128 ultra if that might have anything to do with it. One guy on the other thread mentioned a similar problem on a desktop with an ATI card. Would it be worth looking at moving away from the 'stock' xorg driver?

I'm going to try installing on different PCs since I don't think it's PEBCAK any more. Is there anything missing on the site I'm referencing?

Is simple.world in the current directory?

I am calling stage from the worlds directory created by the script. The dir command lists a file called simple.world.

Update:

I found a better desktop to install on and it worked this time so there must be some hardware issues (I would have to guess video) with my previous setup. I blindly ran the install script for both PCs. The install works on my IBM Xeon but not my Dell Optiplex. If you're interested in systems specifics on the new machine I can post them.

Cheers.
