Can't sync Palm after adding HP Photo printer 7280I purchased a new printer for my PC so I can have better quality
scanning & printing my photos. However, I can't sync my Palm TX with my PC ever since I installed my new printer. I gets hung up on the sync at the beginning of the process. Of course the HP people were no help to me. Help, please! |

RE: Can't sync Palm after adding HP Photo printer 7280Try closing or disabling the HP crapware that runs on startup. I have
found that most of that stuff is unnecessary to basic operation of the printer. Stephen -----Original Message----- From: Tungsten_T@... Hash: SHA1 He is right that it isn't necessary most of the time, but you should test your printer without it, just in case it doesn't work properly. What is most likely happening (assuming it is the HP software) is that the HP software that monitors your ink and paper levels in the printer scans all the USB ports and when a new device connects it may grab the USB port temporarily and thus HotSync can't grab the port to detect the Palm. The Palm's are notorious for once they fail on the initial 'ready to sync' message, they never resend it (most devices will retry a few times before stopping). This means that if the HP software grabs the port and checks to see if it is an HP printer and tries to pass the port back to the system for other software to detect, HotSync likely misses the initial sync request and thus never starts. - -----Original Message----- From: Tungsten_T@... RE: Can't sync Palm after adding HP Photo printer 7280-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1 That is his rather colorful term for the HP software. Usually it is a puerile way to describe badly written software that is largely unneeded. Any of us who've worked in an office though, can see the usefulness of some of those software features, though it tends to be rather bloated with pretty graphics and such that are largely unneeded. In particular the ability for the software to communicate with the printer and tell you when a remote printers ink or paper is low before you start a task is rather nice. - -----Original Message----- From: Tungsten_T@... Sometimes I find software for printers they got rid of years ago! Rarely-used functions have no business running on startup, particularly as they can be run as needed. Running XP in <512MB with a system tray that takes up half the taskbar is a recipe for a slow-booting and slow-running machine. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Hash: SHA1 Your response to his question on 'crapware' is neither friendly nor helpful, but alas, I fear arguing with you is pointless. 512Mb of RAM is very low, under it is certainly not considered to be what they expect you to have. That being said - you are correct that a less consumptive system should be in place for drivers. I fully agree that the HP software should give the option for a base-bones just drivers install for smaller systems as well as people who just don't use the extra features. The applications are not badly behaved, they are coded very well most of the time. The quick-start applications I agree are not needed most of the time, but this doesn't mean they are poorly written. Right or wrong, it is simply a matter of memory, a system with very low RAM has this issue, others do not. This is getting off topic though, and has nothing to do with the question originally posed. - -----Original Message----- From: Tungsten_T@... Re: Can't sync Palm after adding HP Photo printer 7280Fortunately, I have 2 GB of RAM and a 2 GB hard drive so I am not memory lacking. However, when I try to sync my PDA, it gets hung up on the first sync 'circle' and never proceeds beyond that. Thanks for responding but I'm still stuck in never-sync land!

Re: Can't sync Palm after adding HP Photo printer 7280Having read the suggested reasons why Hotsync-ing is so difficult for my T5,
I tried some experiments. First I disconnected all peripherals into USB ports. Then I inserted my cable into each one of the 4 different ports in sequence. Sure enough Only one port worked. Since I don't keep my cable plugged in all the time (nor the others since it is a laptop that does some traveling) I noted that port. While the other peripherals are not picky about the ports they are plugged into, they don't matter. But I surmise that the port I originally set up the sync is the only port that will work. I hope this suggestion works for you and lets you do a complete sync operation. Hash: SHA1 I found something similar with my T3, I completely forgot about it as well. Yes, sometimes only the main port will work if they share an IRQ or other resources. In my T3, it only synced if the cradle was plugged into the first port and not into any hub. Sorry, completely forgot. > -----Original Message----- > From: Tungsten_T@...
