Canon pixma ip4300 printing every color with underlaid grey

Hi,

I tried to use the gutenprint driver for the canon pixma:
gutenprint-5.0.2-3.10.i586

Unfortunately every piece where should be only color is "filled" with underlay
"grey". Here is an scan of the test page print:
http://www.aikido-krakow.org/scan-001.png

I'm using openSuse 11.2 MS8.

Is there anything I can to about it?

Thanks
Karl

OpenSUSE 11.2 is still using 5.0.2?  That version is rather old.

You might want to try downloading the latest version (5.2.4) from
gutenprint.org.

Johannes, can you get Gutenprint updated in OpenSUSE (and make sure
that the bogus patch that forces margins on A4 and letter size paper
is removed)?

Unfortunately not yet for openSUSE 11.2.

See
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=514994

Please test Gutenprint 5.2.4 from
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/kernelhacker/

Those packages are
* without any guarantee or warranty
* without any support
As an extreme example, this means that if your complete computer
center crashes because of these packages, it is only your problem.
On the other hand this does not mean that those packages are
known to be terrible broken but they are not thoroughly
tested so that any unexpected issue can happen.

Do not use FACTORY if your system is 11.1 or even older.
Use the matching package for your particular system.
FACTORY is not better, it is worse when you have an older system.
Using whatever packages from FACTORY in a non-FACTORY system
can cause crashes in arbitrary cases because you would also
need the base system from FACTORY. You can easily mess up
a well working openSUSE 11.1 system with FACTORY updates.

In case of problems and if you like to re-install the
original openSUSE packages:
The version number 5.2.4 is higher than the version
of the original packages in openSUSE so that you may have
to remove installed 5.2.4 packages manually using (as root)

rpm -e --nodeps gutenprint
rpm -e --nodeps gutenprint-gimpplugin

before you could re-install the original packages.

Have you at least gotten rid of that patch to papers.xml, which
isn't necessary for 5.0.2?  That issue was fixed in 5.0.1.

thanks to the informations that I recieved from you I installed:
Gutenprint 5.2.4 from

But the problem is still the same. The color wheel is full of black.

Anything I can do to help find the problem?

Did you delete the old print queue and set up a new one?

If not, do this to make sure that actually the new installed driver
is used with a matching new PPD file in /etc/cups/ppd/<queue_name>.ppd

The PPD in /etc/cups/ppd/<queue_name>.ppd must contain a line like
   *NickName: " ... - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.4"
i.e. the Gutenprint version therein must match to the installed one.

If you try to use an old PPD file with an updated driver, Gutenprint
simply won't try to print.

Johannes, do you include cups-genppdupdate?  It shouldn't be necessary
to delete all the old print queues; simply running cups-genppdupdate
will update the PPD files.

I'm guessing from this that the gamma is way off -- it looks fine near
the outer edge, which suggests that the ramp is simply too steep.  For
now, try setting the gamma to 2.0 to see if that improves matters.

Sascha, can you look into this?

Our gutenprint-5.0.2 package contains /usr/sbin/cups-genppdupdate.5.0

The Gutenprint 5.2.4 RPM package for openSUSE_11.1 i586 from
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/kernelhacker/
contains /usr/sbin/cups-genppdupdate

I just liked to be 100% safe from whatever unexpected side effect
and therefore I suggested to delete and re-setup the queue anew.
In particular because cups-genppdupdate merges all options set
in the old PPD into the new PPD and therefore a syntactically
still correct but actually totally wrong adjustment in the
old PPD might become inherited by the new one.

True.  Actually, cups-genppdupdate -N (in 5.2.4; I don't recall if
that option existed in 5.0.2) resets options to their defaults.

Hallo,

ja, nach der Installation habe ich mit Yast den neuen Treiber ausgewählt.

@Robert: How do I set the Gamma?

There's an option in the Output Control Extra 2 menu named Composite
Gamma.

Where do I find this "Output Control Extra 2 menu"?
In the "Printdialog"?
In some setting?

Thanks

I just found it.
There's Composite "Gamma", and "Composite Gamma Fine Adjustments", and then
the same for CMYK. All the "Composite" are "none" and the fine adjustments are
"0.000".

Should I set all of them to 2 or only the "composite"?

Thanks

There's Composite "Gamma", and "Composite Gamma Fine Adjustments",
and then the same for CMYK. All the "Composite" are "none" and the
   fine adjustments are "0.000".

Should I set all of them to 2 or only the "composite"?

Just the Composite Gamma.  The Composite Gamma Fine Adjustment lets
you make smaller adjustments.

As an attachment I send you the scan of the print with Composite Gamma = 2.
The light colors break away then. This is not a solution.

Hi,

the setting of the composite gamma to 2 didn't change anything. I still have
the problem.

Is there anything else I could try?

Karl

No change at all to the output?
