Hi,

I am looking into using SwiXml for my project to build Swing UI.
Do I need to know swing to use SwiXml?
Is there any tutorial to learn SwiXml?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Important News about the Swixml User Forum / Mailinglist

Like many of you have noticed, we experienced a lot of problems with
the Swixml Mailinglist lately.
The only way to improve things was to change ISPs and the Swixml.org
web site is hosted at "Host It Now Networks" since 2/22/2006.
The transition went very smoothly without any downtime.

Now I'd like to retire the mailinglist, and switch over to a "real"
forum like SMF, which is installed and readily available at :
http://www.swixml.org/forum/

Fortunately, the old mailing list's content is backedup at several
places around the net, like:

or at http://news.gmane.org/

However, I have to ask you to re-register at the new forum.

Frank over in Berlin Germany and Kate at the East Coast have already
signed up and confirmed their continued involvement. Both will play
an even stronger role in the future and are the administrators of the
newly created forum.

Swixml is still going strong, the distribution is currently download
a little over 100-times per day on average and while Swixml has seen
hardly any updates lately, I'd like to put it on a faster update
cycle again and add some interesting new capabilities as well.

Because you define the GUI in xml, you have to accept the rules of that format...

Problem with TextArea

Hi,
When I use "\n" in the text of the TextArea. But it is not considering it as
a newline instead it is printing the text with "\n" character. I tried to debug
and final found out that the SwiXML parsing (i.e SAX parser) used is converting the
"\n" to "\\n" so that in the output the "\n" is printed as it is.

<textarea text="This is a sample message.\n This is a sample message."/>

Please help me to get rid of this situation. I want the SwiXML to recognize
the "\n" as a newline character.

Hello,

actually, I use custom tags a lot. Some are simple, some more complex.

One of the more complex custom tag I use deals with the limitation of JCheckboxMenuItem, as this does not propagate its selected state to actions connected. So I extended JCheckboxMenuItem, JToggleButton and AbstractAction (no custom tag for that, as you may have guessed). In the extended classes I fire a property change event in the overwritten method setSelected().

Other custom tags include drag-and-drop-images, components displaying some zoom factor, help enabled everything (see mailinglist archive for that).

Hope this gives you a rough idea.

Hello Jan,

Working with:
java version "1.5.0_06", "1.4.2_09"
classpath (current directory the swximl-directory root, fetched from cvs or extracted source zip...): lib/j2h.jar:lib/jdom.jar:build/classes. The Jlfgr jar is missing, so the buttons of the control panel do not have icons... I did not mention that...

I did the same with the original swixml jar file from the website, it worked as well.

OS in all cases is linux, kernel 2.6.12-9-386.

It seems your problem lies somewhere else. Try stripping the classpath like I did.

step 1: figure out the swing objects you want to use and the heirarchy
of those objects
step 2: write the few corresponding xml tags instead of the reams of
java code.
step 3: sigh in relief when you realize just how much annoyance you avoided.

there's really not much to it. you just have to know what you want in
swing, which, admitedly, can be a hurdle unto itself.

That and applets are icky. ;) crashed firefox. ajax or flash for web...
java for serverside and desktop clients... i don't think java applets
have ever worked out well, not counting a few rare exceptions.

umm... it was easy?
although i didn't do anything too complex. I just made the tags render
with AWT widgets instead of swing.

I have a chat client which does not look as good as it should.

My Flex looks like

problem with MatteBorder.

If I run the gridbag example that is on the website (xml see below), I dont
get the red MatteBorder (in JDK 1.4 and JDK 1.5).
I compiled SwiXML in debug mode and even added a print statement in the
BorderConverter class, just before the border is actually created.

When it comes to planning for the future Thinlet really looses it's
luster because it's limited by the main thinlet class's functionality
which is really difficult to modify. It's all these nested arrays of
arrays, the importance and meaning of which only resides in the
creators head and the dense uncommented code.

Swixml on the other hand is so simple that as the underlying java
classes change it will simply change with them. Plus the code is easy
to tweak and can be extended easily to use other things like AWT or any
other windowing stuff.

I think Jelly has a swing extension but Jelly is far more complicated in
that it practically allows you to program in xml.

SwiXAT - Swing-XML Authoring Tool v.0.5.0 released

I'm glad to announce that the version 0.5.0 of SwiXAT - the Swing XML
Authoring Tool - has been released.

SwiXAT (http://www.swixat.org) is a Swing-based authoring tool for the
quick and easy development of GUI Java applications. It implements a
true MVC framework and uses SwiXML as the XUL engine (without any
modification to its source code!), BeanShell (or Groovy) as a scripting
language for the controller, and JXPath as the binding mechanism between
the view and model. It provides a complete environment in which it is
possible to almost write an entire Java Swing application without
writing Java compiled code, maintaining however the power of any
java-based application. The use of XPath makes it very simple to
traverse the object tree of the application's business model.

This new version adds an improved support for JList, JComboBox and JTree
components; two new data sources, DOMDataSource and ObjectDataSource
were added; the support for JComboBox renderers was added, and the model
event handling has been simplified. The user's guide has been updated
with the documentation about the new features.

A: Javahelp with Swixml

Hello all,

to bring this list a little back to life, I would like to show something which reminded me (again) of the power of XML for UI generation in general and Swixml in particular.

Recently I had the problem to add a help system to our application. Short scan revaled JavaHelp as the system to use and some tools (HelpSetMaker) to author the necessary files. The only problem remaining was to get my GUI components to be "registered" on this help system, such as:

HelpSet helpSet = ...;
HelpBroker broker = ...;
broker.enableHelp(myComponent, "my.help.id", helpSet);

Here, myComponent is an arbitrary java.awt.Component, perhaps a JTextField to enable help at. The helpSet and the helpBroker are JavaHelp specific classes.

One solution would have been to get all GUI components you want to enable help at and assign the appropriate help-ID manually. Each time you change the help system, you need to change this code as well.

So, my solution was different. First, I created specialized, help-enabled classes for each GUI component I wanted to use. This was done through copying the first manually created class to several others, changing name and ancestor:

The HelpIdConverter does the work of initializing the HelpSet and the HelpBroker. My current implementation uses only one helpset, but this may be changed easily. The code of the HelpIdConverter is also below, but -- I think -- is straightforward anyway. Of course, in the above example I may have overwritten the standard "tag names", such as:

But then, I see at the first glance which GUI component is'nt yet help-enabled.

As you may have guessed, I can now write something like this in my Swixml-GUI files:

So, there ends my quick introduction to implementing context sensitive help with the help of Swixml. I guess, with a similar approach (shadow classes for each component) it is possible to implement GUIs able to switch language/locale at runtime: just remember the resource-key, add the affected component to some storage and -- upon locale change -- go through this storage and re-render the GUI item using the resource key. (just a thought, did'nt try this).

To additionally water your mouth, I additionally append actions to invoke help after tracking and for our main application frame.

applet problem

I've been successful creating an application that works both as an
applet and as a client. I also have had no problems displaying JDialog's
as well. What I now would like to do is create a base XDlg class that
will deal with the vast majority of my dozen plus JDialog's. By design,
each XML file would consistently name the variables. So, JDialog is
_dialog, and the (optional) ok/cancel JButton's _ok and _can. This
approach works perfectly as a client application. However, as an applet,
none of the variables are "discovered".

Is there a workaround/solution to this? Thanks.

I figured out my problem. The example I was using was an applet from the old
live demo site. It wouldn't render because I was trying to render it like a
JFrame. I still would like to see some documentation on the project to make
life easier. Are there any online articles, how-tos, or tutorials available?

Another Question:

Is there an Eclipse plug-in for SwixML? It just seems strange that you have
to feed in an XML file into a java program to produce the output. Why not
just focus on designing the XML part and have an IDE produce the results?

Products like Flex also use java and they also feed in mxml data, but you
need see the java side.

Can applets use classloaders at run time? I just learned to use classloaders
at run time with coldfusion and it has really boosted what you can do with
that platform.

I would love to connect SwixML with coldfusion CFC via a applet or
application. Has anyone done this yet?

perhaps you could post your XML? Or the java code you are using?

Usually, the sequence
se = new SwingEngine();
container = se.render(...);
container.setVisible(true);

Should produce some output...
