Local Context:

Chile defines the term innovation as a way to achieve competitiveness.  In 2005, the Chilean government boosted the National Innovation Council to conduct a series of surveys, analysis and recommendations in order to develop a National Innovation Strategy.

This National Innovation Strategy aims to develop dynamic competitive advantages which will give better stability levels for human capital education and technological innovation.

Duoc UC is a key-player and one of the leading institutions of the region, offering a hands-on approach and industry-focused programs of 2 and 4-years long. Founded by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, DuocUC is part of its network.  In 2010 Duoc UC obtained a 7 out of 7 year institutional accreditation from the National Commission of Accreditation (CNA), which confirms the soundness of its project and its relevance among the higher education institutions in the country.

The School of Design -located in the San Carlos de Apoquindo Campus - is one of the most important and older Schools of DuocUC.  Its goal for the 21st century is to contribute to the cultural enrichment of Chile by training future professionals and technicians who will make up the carious job niches in the design field of tomorrow.

Venue / Facilities:

The Technological Design Center, located in the San Carlos de Apoquindo Campus, is the unit in charge of providing management support to the School of Design.  Its role is to improve the educational process and to develop skills, promoting competence-based learning, systematic procedures, corporate partnerships, all this supported by different networks of collaboration.

The San Carlos de Apoquindo campus offers many facilities such as an Auditorium for 200 persons, a hall for exhibitions, a TV Studio with the best technology that can hold 250 persons and a Technology Design Center for experimental development.

Conference description

Concept idea:

Building a global design bridge to seek new opportunities and challenges in Design.  Find out what is happening in the global design community through four windows or gates in order to facilitate the face-to-face interaction among education, promotion, professional and corporate stakeholders.

This intercultural experience will be a great opportunity for emerging economies to learn about the differences and similarities amongst them.

CONFERENCE TOPICS

The common concept for the 2012 Conferences to be held in May in Helsinki, Finland and in November in Santiago, Chile, considers 4 topics divided  into four axes which will be common for both conferences.

-          Innovation issues:  challenges and opportunities.

-          Sustainability issues, challenges and opportunities.

-          Professional practice and market issues:  challenges and opportunities.

-          Education and overcrowded issues:  challenges and opportunities.

These four topics will be addressed in Helsinki from an academic perspective (essays, research, papers, etc.) and in Chile considering the experience and accomplishment in different markets and industries.

We wish to provide for each topic a practical approach based on experience combining practical activities and know-how.

This Conference will be preceded by the Latam Design Summit, on November 14th, 2011.

WORKSHOP?

I am presenting a paper in Helsinki now in May under the heading of  "A True
Public Place". It is a report and analysis of an applied method to
regenerate cultural spaces and places and refers to a real life project.
My theoretical approach is built on research focusing human centered
methods, not least how these considers sensual experiences as explained by,
among others, Pallasmaa and Zumthor. Furthermore, I also explore the link
between human centered and sustainability under the heading of affective
sustainability, which is a notion I established 6 years ago as a result of
my own research.

For Santiago, I would like investigate and explore the subject of human
centered further by arranging a workshop under the heading of "Making
matters Matter to Man".
Background:
Arriving at sustainable lifestyles is not merely a matter of technology and
politics. It is about making humans co-operate and contribute more or less
intuitively, by lived rather than learned experience. It is to design, build
and plan with, rather than against, human nature: our inbuilt competence for
survival and protection as also our navigation through sensual experiences.
Human centered as it is applied today does all too often not address these
issues in a way which merits the prefix 'human'. It is still about 'users'
and overtly simplified definitions of emotions, intuition and the rational
human.
My workshop is meant to challenge a mix of design and architect
practitioners and academics from different cultures on "how to make matters
matter to man": to discuss which theories are informing them and how to best
apply them.

Would this be of interest to the conference?

Looking forward to hear from you.
