Sorry - we have no information except the change logs and probably the
commit messages you may find. I fear you're forced to find out by
trial and error. I'm really sorry i can't help out better here. That's
why we currently put so much effort in automating our conformance
testing so we can give exact answers to what works and what does not
work. Once we're final you should consider a migration to the new
release.

I'm not completely agree with your label of a pure-XForms activist ;)

Yes, you can design complete UIs in XForms but i agree with you and
have another 'it depends':
for one of course on complexity of your UI. If your app is built
essentially around XForms functionality it doesn't hurt to wrap a bit
of button switching logic and stuff and do that also in XForms. But
this has limitations. If the UI is highly dynamic and
context-dependent then you start to mix up UI-logic with the business
logic or purpose of the actual form. This can be unhealthy as aspects
can get mixed up. Maintainability will suffer.

One reason for this is the lack of modularization features in current
XForms. We've gathered positive experiences with our load embed
feature which allows you to decompose the XForms models and handle
them as distinct pieces and load them on demand. This allows you to
have a model for the UI logic and keep your business logic (how i hate
this term) seperate.

Another option is e.g. Dojo itself which we now not only consider as
an toolkit which gives us the control but allows to build much more
complex apps which are fully accessible. That's unfortunately still a
weak point of so many UI toolsets out there.

Not to forget about XQuery as in eXist or MarkLogic - another option
to build complex apps and to mix that with XForms.

XForms is not a standalone language - that is a good thing. It does
not have the attitude of being the silver bullet to all UI questions
and it's made to be mixed or injected into other markup languages.
Just pick whatever you like to 'do the rest'.

But as you mentioned - if your context is heavily involved with XML
anyway you'll likely profit from XForms while a more 'traditional'
environment with databases, middle ware, object and business layers
have already developed powerful tools to handle their stuff and it
might be a bit more of upfront work to use XForms. But we'll get there
one day. For now XForms is for XML

Our plan is to have a very good core Chiba in the very near future.
Then we'll have some room for concentrating on the outside.

i can't object that - though i never had the 'hope' that XForms would
become widely supported in browsers natively (the IE catch) in the
foreseeable future.

Some things - like Malt whisky - take longer ;) but are nevertheless
good. XForms has made a tremendous step forward with 1.1 and the WG is
as active and motivated without even giving it a break after
successful rollout of 1.1.

Same is true for the implementations that are *now* starting to leave
childhood behind and support complex requirements. We shouldn't forget
that good form frameworks are awfully hard to specify and to develop
as you can see by all the failed projects that put this on their
agenda and followed their own way. Often this ended deep in the woods.

Think Ronald mentioned it - For long years we've driven Chiba with a
minimal team of often only 2 core people. We concentrated on the
software and let others write the tutorials. You'll find a lot of
these on the internet. In the meantime our team has grown a bit and
there are improvements on the way.

I am currently having a problem with nested repeats. Seam is one of the better Java EE frameworks in this context for server side java technology.
If you start from a relational database you can generate a fully functional CRUD GUI for your related entities in under 60 seconds, ... nice fully functional working code :-)

i'm not at all against a new wave of refactorings to improve the
situation. The initial web code was really grown and ended up in quite
a mess in Chiba 2.x. I'm happy we've made some simplifications now but
that's surely still far from ideally extensible code. I would be
hapoy to study some integration code to see where we can use more
injection and provide a better API. So speak up or send some code for
us to learn from ;)

Question about select controls in repeaters

Hi all,
I have a quick question about the automatic selection of items in select controls.

First of all, I know that if I want to have an item of a select control to be selected when the form opens, I just have to provide the item's id in the node of the instance relevant to the select.

BUT, despite my not providing that id in the instance, I can see sometimes that an item is selected in the control. This happens when the select is in a form embedded in a repeater. And the most curious is that another select, which comes earlier in the form does not have that "problem" of having an item automatically selected. Dear Paolo Di Pietro,

I tried the released war file on ubuntu (9.10) with the
core-tar-packages from tomcat.apache.org.
I checked version 5.5.28 and 6.0.20 and everything started up just
fine. What I did was copying the unmodified war-file to the webapps
directory and call startup.sh from the bin directory. For Tomcat 5.5 I
also had to set JAVA_HOME.

Can you retry it with one of the provided packages from apache and see
if the error still occurs?

When I deploy a chiba-3.0.0b2 exactly as downloaded, the application doesn’t start. The error is

FAIL - Encountered exception java.lang.IllegalStateException: Container org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[localhost].[/chiba-3.0.0b2] has not been started

I spent a lot of time looking for the error, and I found that removing the following lines from the WEB.XML file chiba starts (but obviously doesn’t intercept .xhtml files):

<filter-name>XFormsFilter</filter-name>

<filter-class>org.chiba.agent.web.filter.XFormsFilter</filter-class>

<init-param>

<param-name>useragent</param-name>

<param-value>dojo</param-value>

</init-param>

</filter>

<filter-mapping>

<filter-name>XFormsFilter</filter-name>

<url-pattern>*.xhtml</url-pattern>

</filter-mapping>

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Thanks for reporting this problem. We're not yet testing IE so we
wouldn't found it ourselves. Hope we can investigate it sometime and
probably find a solution. But please understand that we have
priorities - i'm currently working very hard to automate the complete
XForms 1.1 test suite with Selenium on FF which will allow us to run
the tests on different browsers (once i'm through with working through
the test issues - currently around 90-94% pass). Once that's done
another few cases have to be fixed before we roll our a new release.

Probably we need to find a JS hack for IE. If you're able to
investigate further on this and find additional information it will be
greatly appreciated.

Before going to final we'll definitely test IE and fix such issues.

I assume that you don't know how to pass your params to your service?

First of all let me mention that you don't have to program the
connection. All is done in pure XForms markup by using a
<xf:submission .../>

Here's not the place to explain all options of submission (there are
to many) but maybe a short example may do:

assume you want to access a service with a GET and pass some params to
it then you can do something like this:

<xf:submission method="GET" replace="instance"
target="instance('service-response')" (...)>
<xf:resouce value="concat('myUrl?param1=', instance('params')/param1)"/>
<xf:submission>

Would be probably easier to explain if you give a bit more detail
about the service you'd like to access and what your specific problem
is. Hope you got an idea anyway.

textarea (IE7) displays a space instead of a new line

I am using chiba 3.0.0b2, and I have a problem with the textarea component with IE7.

The textarea displays the content on a single row with all new lines replaced by a space.

The problem occurs for both the simple textarea and the dojo textarea.

The same instance is correctly displayed with Firefox (3.5).
