Hi!
This has been discussed informally in the past (Amette and others).
But I want to make it "official", so here is the proposed change:
Preserve Environment -> Respect Environment
I believe it was the original intent of the statement.
The word preserve is more restrictive to changes/improvements and it
can prevent innovation. (If someone wants a "preserved" version of
Tiki 1.4, they can get a copy on Sourceforge). Whereas respect is more
about sustainability. It means you should take into account the
existing use base and make the upgrade reasonable (data migration
path, etc.). And it's certainly how we are working. (ex.: Major
improvements to the theme system, etc.)
