I managed to get the Cobertura report to show non 0% coverage

To do this I had to set the ‘forkMode’ property in ‘maven-surefire-plugin’

When this was set to ‘never’, then the coverage report always shows 0%

When I changed this to ‘once’, then the coverage started to show the expected non 0% results

I’m new to maven, so if anyone can provide an explanation, that will be useful

I can see that the ‘forkMode’ property controls forking a JVM for testing, but why does that affect the coverage reports

Cobertura reports always have 0% coverage

I’m using Cobertura with Maven2, but I always get 0% coverage

I’m running two test classes with:

mvn clean cobertura:cobertura

and while there is nowhere near 100% coverage, I would expect to see some coverage

- however the report always shows 0% and no lines covered

I’m using Java 5, cobertura-maven-plugin 2.2, cobertura 1.9 and running from a Windows command prompt on a 64 bit XP Professional OS

I’m also using PowerMock with Mockito to mock various classes, but the actual tests (with mock classes) run Ok

I’ve ‘googled’ extensively for a solution, but have found nothing to date

- can anyone suggest why this is

NullPointerException while instrumenting

Too Many Source Files?

Hello, I'm new to this cobertura development thing and I'm having a problem. For some reason, when I run the cobertura-report task with 290+ source files, it aborts. It doesn't print a fail message, no "out of memory" error or anything. It just completely aborts our of Ant.

It runs about 270+ source files just fine.
It's nothing in the source files, because I can report with them all, just not all at once.

I am using Ant 1.7.0 and just upgraded to cobertura 1.9.3, and am still getting the same issue.

In addition, when I try to use the 'maxmemory' setting, I get a 'deprecated' warning. And it has no discernible effect, as the script still abends.

Any suggestions?

I am able to do the cobertura instrumentation on my local windows dev machine and checked in the code into SVN. When I check-in the code, Bamboo build gets triggered on remote bamboo server and build failed with the following error message:

This error happens as Cobertura is trying to write out a file in the temp directory. I see you are on Windows. That directory is typically at C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Local Settings\Temp.

I tried changing folder permissions for my user id on bamboo build server and also for Administrator (thinking, it might be using Administrator Local\Temp folder). Nothing seems to be working.

Unfortunately, there is a maximum length that a method can have. There is not much that can be done about this except to exclude the SmfGrammerParser class from instrumentation or to refactor the method.

Report shows the 0 classes.

Hi guys,

I am using cobertura to generate code coverage report. We have linux system and have classes scattered in different folder rather than jar or war files. I have changed some of the class files with instrumented class files. and when I restart the web server it generates the cobertura.ser file inside /root folder . However when I generates the report using it, report shows 0 classes. However if I run the report using the file generated along with instrumented class files it shows 91 classes with 0% coverage.

Any clue ?? suggestion ??? comment ???

hi Folks,

I just solved the problem.... It was a silly mistake I made (happens when u are habituated with using windows)... The cobertura file wasn't having enough permission..

so I changed it using chmod command. and now it executes... and generates the cobertura.ser file in /root folder.

But one problem gets resolved and another pops up. it's like there is no end of problems.

I was happy as it generates the cobertura.ser file. But when I generates the report using it it shows 0 classes in the report. However the cobertura.ser generated along with the instrumented class files shows 91 classes inside it and they all shows 0% coverage when I run the report.

Hi folks,

We have a web application on Linux OS where we uses Apache Tomcat server. We are using plain classes in different folders rather then any war or jar file. To find out code coverage I follow the below steps

1. Replace some of the class files with instrumented class file.

2. Set the location of cobertura.jar file in my CLASSPATH variable.

3. Restart the web server.

After I restart the web server it didn't start properly. When I check the logs I found that it fails to locate the cobertura classes. So I did the following things to rectify the problem

1. I check the classpath with echo $CLASSPTAH command. And there was correct path of cobertura.jar file in it.

2. So to check further I made a dummy java file, compiles it and generates the instrumented class file. Then I run it using command Java filename. And it ran successfully and also generated the cobertura.ser file.

But it still shows the below error when I restart the web server to find out code coverage of my project files. I am confused why this is happening.

Exception during startup processing
java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: net/sourceforge/cobertura/coveragedata/HasBeenInstrumented

It also show the following error when I generates the instrumented class files.

No line number information found for class com.appliancestudio.frontpanel.RoomSensor$1. Perhaps you need to compile with debug=true?

Feature req: exclude class by annotation - @Entity?

I use coberatura from Maven, and I'd like to have a regex of class
level annotations I could specify that indicate a class is to be
excluded from the coverage report.

The major culprit being @Entity. Our domain model is anemic, and
doesn't need to have getters and setters tested.

Is this a feature that anyone else is interested in or perhaps working
on? I'd be willing to tackle this if someone could point me in the
right direction. I'd need to know where the maven plugin is and where
the existing config processing is. From there I would need to find my
way to wherever the set of classes to instrument/report is determined.

Crap4J Metric Generation

Hi.

I've been making use of the Crap4J metric http://www.crap4j.org/ for a while now and find it a shame that it doesn't have maven capabilities.

It seems that Cobertura has access to all the numbers needed to generate a Crap4J metric so I was if there had been any thought of generating that metric.

CRAP(m) = comp(m)^2 * (1 – cov(m)/100)^3 + comp(m)

Where comp(m) is the cyclomatic complexity of method m, and cov(m) is the
test code coverage provided by automated tests.

If there has not, and there are no future plans for doing so, I was wondering if cobertura could be extended to allow for the generation of XML report that contained method level coverage information (since Crap4J is a method level metric). It may already contain this, but my quick glance didn't turn it up.

Replacing the original classes should be sufficient for a webapp.

I would try setting the property as Dmitri suggested: net.sourceforge.cobertura.datafile=/path/to/instrumented/cobertura.ser

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I have replaced the original classes with the instrumented classes, so I
don't think I need to specify that in classpath ?? or do I ???

And I think the classpath is set properly coz if it isn't it should throw
the error while running the class files as it will not get the cobertura.jar
file. right ??? but I am not getting any error...

If you do not see the .ser file, that means that instrumented classes
are not being used. Make sure your classpath is correct and
instrumented classes are first on the classpath. For a web app that is
the WEB-INF/classes and WEB-INF/lib directories that are to be search
for classes first.

In any case, your other option is to specify exact location of the
.ser file with command line system property
-Dnet.sourceforge.cobertura.datafile=/path/to/instrumented/cobertura.ser

You dont need ant to run the classes. Just make sure cobertura.jar is on the applications classpath. (You used to have to make sure that it was on the web servers root classpath, but I dont think that is a requirement with 1.9.3 not sure).

You will also need to move the cobertura.ser file that is created during the instrumentation to the webapps current directory.

After you use the webapp with either manual testing or junits, shutdown the web server. After the process has exited, copy the cobertura.ser file outside the device and run the report against it.

In my project we have a embedded system which has Linux operating system and apache as web server. We don't use any WAR and JAR file but uses plain java classes scattered in different folders for web application. And as it's embedded project we have limited functionality on that machine. I mean we don't even have ANT installed there. I can generate the instrumented classed from outside the embedded device but the problem is how to make that classes run and generate report.

any suggestion ? solution ??

Hey,

I think I figured this out. I am dividing my tests by first letter.. so I have a junit thread for A*Test*.class, another for B*Test*.class etc.

Instead of having them all write to a single cobertura.ser.. I write to a cobertura-a.ser, cobertura-b.ser, etc... then make use of the cobertura-merge to combine them into a single file.

Reduced cobertura time of my project from 13 minutes to 3. Hurray!

Hi John

I have some other issue. We have loaded the cobertura.ser in the tomcat\bin directory and cobertura.jar in the tomcat\lib. We updated the Catalina.bat to include the classpath for coberura.ser. We ran the test and stop the tomcat; we are not seeing any change in the cobertura.ser. Try to resolve this problem from last 3 days. Please help us on that.

cobertura.jar should be in the classpath of the server, not in the
classpath of the application (WEB-INF/lib). Tomcat kills (sets to null) all
static variables of all application classes when unloading an application.
This kills the coverage information. I realized this some weeks ago, see my
mails on the list, took me at least one day of search.
