Hi:

I don't have a link but I've worked with CF for a while and have a couple of
very good reasons why migrating to CF is a good move:

Microsoft's software is not sound, they do so many upgrades because of
deffects and total lack of quality control ( Windows Vista is a good
example). Therefore MS will have a smaller role in the future of web
applications/platforms (or even dissapear).

Adobe on the other hand is a very solid software producer, even before they
bought Cold Fusion from Macromedia, Cold Fusion proved to be a robust web
development environment. Now that Cold Fusion has been merged with Adobe
apps (PDF, Photoshop features, etc), plus the capabilty to manage AJAX apps,
etc. CF is now like a one stop shop for all kind of web apps.

ASP runs in windows servers only, CF can (and should as any serious web
develepmoent environment) run in Linux servers.

There are plenty of web hosting services that offer Cold Fusion. So you can
outsource the server's connection/maintance and develop and test new apps
before actually buying the server.

CF syntax is very simple. Any ASP programmer can learn it right away, in
your specific case, the programmers who wrote the legacy ASP could
"tanslate" the code. Personally, I hired a ASP jr programmer and tought him
the basics and asked him to read the manual, he told me coding was a lot
simpler and faster in CF and started programming in CF withing a week.

There are several big name websites using CF: The Economist, Myspace, etc
(you know how to tell when an app is developed in CF).

ColdFusion based, and provides for WYSIWIG newsletter creation; a number of
companies are currently using it.

One good feature that matches your needs is that for one list, you can have
multiple sub-groups that either overlap or are exclusive of each other. If
you want to avoid programming it yourself, the fee is reasonable. Or, if
you want to purchase a license for your own use, we could discuss that.

I've had a lot of success using alt-n's MDaeomon (www.altn.com). Works
great. I also use GroupMail for email campaigns. They are not CF specific,
but again, email should be left to mail servers, not web apps (in my
opinion).

I have suffered with this crap for years.
What I do is filter for code like /url and brackets and braces and
similar and log the message as junk and send it to a different table
where I log the ip if it a spammer and use the logged ip to filter out
posters, I cflocation them to FTC frauds and scams page if their ip
matches. Check for a pattern that a normal poster would not do and try
to filter on that.
I also take service calls this way from my clients and it is extremely
important not to chase junk.

Also I check for referring page that should match the domain of the
processing page, if they fail that I send them to FTC
Then I check message field for unwanted keywords and junk the message
that way and e-mail field certain domain names and log the message as
junk and send it to a different table where I log the ip if it a spam
type message.
One other passing a hidden calculated number from one page to the next
and reject the person if the variable fails a check one that I find
works is 22/7 plus the date as a number confuses most script kiddies
one problem if you have a person who starts just before midnight, which
could be 8 or 9 elsewhere in the country.

I monitor loaded pages and I find that spammers just post to processing
page, so if they are over doing it I just change the processing page
name normal users
never notice.

I am building tables that contains words and phrases that would be
used in a automotive racing site or a alpine ski racing site and then
check a message or a posting if it did not match at least once it would
be labeled junk and processed accordingly.

Hi Folks

I have a CF email contact form on my website.
It requires First name, Last name, email address and the body of the email.
before the submission is accepted. Recently it was hit with a bunch of
automated spam attacks so I added a graphical security image that needs to be
included.

The automated spam is still getting thru, with the first and last names blank and
the graphical security image being ignored. I can't replicate this manually. Any
ideas how to prevent it.

Mark,

From my experience I would suggest still splitting up the DB and application
servers for production environments. Although with the popularity of
virtualization these days you don't have to have physically separate
machines but just use separate virtual machines to run each server. The same
issues that are documented on the web for the older versions of CF still
apply to the newest version. I prefer separate environments for each server
simple from a maintenance standpoint, debugging is a whole lot simpler.

Just an FYI though, I've recently started reading a book called Release It!
Design and Deply Production-Ready Software by Nygard (Pragmatic Programmers)
and it gives some tremendous insight on production environments and patterns
which you may find helpful considering your question.

Separate Web and DB servers

Howdy,

Back in the olden days of Allaire and Macromedia, most of the text I
read on web site architecture with Coldfusion mandated separate Web and
DB servers.

Do you feel that is still the case, or have things changed? My sense is
that both CF and DBs like MySQL and SQL Server are still pretty decent
memory hogs, especially if you are doing a lot of template and query
caching, and carry a lot of data around in the SESSION and APPLICATION
scopes.

But I'd be interested in anyone else's thoughts.

Get data not passed to form

Hi folks

I have a html page that has a series of links such as.
<a href="email.cfm?email=rob">
<a href="email.cfm?email=kim">

the email.cfm form then has a email contact form that sends the email to rob or
Kim using a series of if statements such as:
<cfif email is "rob"><cfset emailsender="rob@...">

The process has worked well for several years, recently the email.cfm form is no
longer reading the "email" variable and the email is being sent to a default.

I have reloaded the pages cleaned out the cache etc. but can't get it to work. I
know the hosting company has done recent upgrades and I am wondering if the
GET format has changed.

CrystalTech and have a client with about 30 domains on EdgeWebHosting.

All three of those are good (others might also be good but I have no
experience with the others mentioned). I would say that HostMySite exceeds

methods used for support. They literally go the extra mile... their support
ticket procedure is superb, and they take the burden on themselves. The

Happy New Year posting for intern

I would like to wish the group a Happy New Year. Hope every body is
having a good holiday and will have a productive year..

Also I have picked up a project that covers a wide range of talents. So
I am looking for a few interns that are computer literate and have a
desire to learn. The ideal candidate will have understanding of coding
<not a full time programmer> with a knowledge of hardware. Plus have the
desire to learn about sports car road racing.
This is not a position for the timid or being unable to work under
pressure. It is not a pressure cooker at the moment but if you prove
your self as a useful intern there will be compensated positions
opening up to travel and do track side data collection.
The project is based about a roads racing diver with 50 years of racing
experience the site which is under development is bobbybrownracing.com.

To give you an idea of some of the problems we will be dealing with is,
the onboard video in the Formula 2 Ralt freezes when he hits the top rpm
of 9500 and shifts into 5 gear, stays frozen for a bit and then starts
to record again. Possibilities are vibration at top rpm or electrical
interference.
We want to put some of this video on the web site and use other clips
for driver training, this might give you an idea of what we are trying
to do.

I first worked for Bobby in 1978 and the people and places that I have
visited due to motorsports have been second to none. So if your

This will return your string up to the first space after 275 characters.

Reverse the string, find the first blank, substring it from that point+1, then reverse it again.

So now I've a reasonable piece of the string from the query, striped of
HTML. I want to display the string but I don't want the display to end
it the middle of a word. I want it to end on a space.

Before I write some fancy loop program that counts spaces, gets me the
position of the last space, etc., I'm thinking there's got to be an
easier way.

I'd be happy if I can either 1) display the whole string terminating on
the last space, or 2) display the string teminating on the X occurance
of a space (this would give me the first X number of words).

Does anyone know the easy way?

Yeah that's a better regex for the task. Actually one more change should
improve the efficiency a bit:

"<[^>]+>"

*=occurs zero or more times
+=occurs one or more times

OK, this isn't so stupid a question.

Now I've got the string I want. It's HTML tagged and I want to display
only the text, not the code; and I certainly don't want to execute the
code.

I can spend the next two hours or three hours writing a procedure that
looks for each occurance of < and stips out every up to >, but it seems
there should already be something that strips HTML from a string.

Is there something in Cold Fusion that strips HTML from string, or does
someone have an easy strip routine??? I don't know which tags will be
used an what the content of those tags will be.

The < > seem it would be the most reliable key.
