They made a point of telling me that Vince was really busy and there weren't any promises, but then they did call me personally on the phone to tell me he'd taken an interest in it, so although it's no guarantee it does sound promising.

Duncan:

I forgot to mention in the last email that the use of % to name localized strings is purely preferential. It's intended to reduce the likelyhood of namespace conflict in which a static string might be inappropriately replaced with a localized string. I personally tend to prefix my localized strings with %tap_ just as an added layer of protection against this phenomena. Because localized strings can be named any way you want, you can replace text in one language with another, i.e. "friend" might become "amigo" in spanish. This is not recommended because a change in the text of the original language would either cancel out the translated text (so the original language would then appear in its place) or would require updating many different resource bundles to match the change (tightly coupled in the worst way), though it might work in a pinch if you needed to replace someone else's non-i18n text temporarily while working on a migration or integrating someone else's plugin.

Wow, that's a lot of localization, especially for a large application. Or at least it sounds like it. I can't say that I know statistically what the average is for internationalized applications.

Unfortunately I'm not aware of any sites I could point you toward currently fitting that description. Of course, as you know with any new technology adoption is slow, although the onTap framework seems to be reaching the kind of exposure now that will hopefully snowball into a larger development community and a better adoption rate.

I believe it can. See my previous reply to Cedric in this thread. Of course, if you need to allow the clients to manage these labels themselves (instead of asking one of your staff to make changes), then you'll need to create an interface for your client since the framework doesn't natively provide an interface for that purpose. I would likely designate a directory-name for additional resource-bundles, such as "clientresource" and have the user interface create one resource-bundle file for each language in a branded directory, i.e. for global localized strings for english, the interface would create the directory /_components/_brand/[client]/_application/clientresource/. Within this directory it would create en.txt, en_us.txt, en_gb.txt, de.txt, fr.txt, etc. These templates could then be read and cached using the function request.tapi.readResourceBundle("_application/clientresource","B") (check the documentation for the function in the mx_file library for specifics re: caching and overwriting). The second argument, "B" indicates that the path "_application/clientresource" is relative to the branding directory for the current request, and by specifying a directory instead of a specific file, the resource-bundle tools will then automatically include any appropriate files for the locale of the current request, i.e. for en_GB locale, it will include both en.txt and en_gb.txt. I would read this bundle once, immediately following the reading of the default, non-client-specific resource bundle.

Yes, there are several ways this can be accomplished.

Personally I think the most elegant method is to use the normally enabled i18n and branding directories with XHTML and simply reset any localization strings a client would like to have changed in the branding directories. We Now Return To Regularly Scheduled Programming

Hi all,

Sorry I've been out of touch the past 2 weeks. Hurricane Wilma caused more damage than we'd expected on October 24th and we were without power for our last week in Ft Lauderdale Florida (with no real hope of receiving power soon). We left on Nov. 2nd for our move to Charlottesville Virginia and promptly lost the transmission in our car and were stranded in St Augustine Florida for the following week. We're now unpacking in our new apartment and have a bed (we slept on the floor the first night and an air-matress the 2nd) and a serviceable desk and were able to achieve internet connectivity late last night.

I'm just now sifting through large amounts of email before I get back to some programming tasks I've been unable to work on for the past two weeks (including a revision to the html library's implementation of select-boxes to improve performance and caching of forms, possible CFC encapsulation of some previously exposed caching variables for file-system access, and further work on the contact-management plugin).

I am comparing some frameworks and your i18n features make it a compelling

There have been plans to support BlueDragon for a while, it's just not been feasible with previous versions. The current version might run it, but at the moment I know someone needs to go through the entire 3MB more or less line by line to check for any places where the variation in list-functions might cause problems with BlueDragon. Beyond that I'm not sure what else needs to be done to accomodate BD, but I haven't had the time to do that, so... I'd absolutely love to have more BD people help me make it work on that platform.

Myself and several other framework authors including Jeff Peters (Fusebox), Hal Helms/Ben Edwards (Mach-II), and Joe Rinehart (Model-Glue) are building versions of Macromedia's Pet Market sample application with articles for publication in an upcoming ColdFusion Developer's Journal. This was all Simon Horwith's idea, something he proposed to us while we were speaking at the frameworks conference last week. Once they're all built, of course there should be plenty of code to peruse and you can load it all up and examine it with your load-testing tool of choice. (I think "Open STA" was the name of the tool we used for load testing recently at my current job.)

Have you done any more work on the framework comparisons for similar apps? I would think your blogging application would be perfect for this. You could re-write it in Model-Glue, Mach ii, and Fusebox.

I'm still a bit concerned with the overhead of onTap for each request, and the generated content appearing on the screen. I'm sure myself, and others, would really be interested in a comparison.

Error for ontap

Folks,

Got smart and blew away the ontap framework in which I'd been doing the
exercises found in the docs, downloaded everything from FusionTap and
started fresh.

Now I'm watching the PluginManager which is currently at step 6 of 9...

Good deal. It does take a little getting used to not writing ad-hoc sql
directly, but I think the advantages are worth it once you get past the

Bug in the docs, Quick Start Guide: Content Update Forms

On the page "Quick Start Guide : Content Update Forms" when creating the 100_validateform.cfm, the example code contains an error:
Line reading:
<cfset view.productforom = "Contragulatinos! Your product has been updated.")>
will throw an error from that orphaned parenthesis.
I substituted:
<cfset view.productforom = "Contragulatinos! Your product has been updated.">
and it does what I expected at that stage, i.e. shows validation messages indicating that status, product name and category are required

The forum never actually got released... It was written before the xhtml tag and so the codebase is probably not very intuitive... I plan to rewrite it using the xhtml syntax/tools although I'm not sure when I'll be able to get to that... Right now I'm working on People onTap as an internationalized contact manager, which turns out to be a pretty complex task in and of itself, just because of the need to manage different formats for phone numbers, addresses, etc. So since I probably won't be able to bang it out in a week like I did with the blog (also because I don't have a week of vacation time to do that with), I went ahead and put the url for the SVN repository on the public site to let people get access to the 0.1 alpha with the knowledge that it's still rather embryonic. This way people who are really interested can see the progress without being confused by a zip archive and thinking it's complete.

OnTap framework running and I'm working through the documentation included. I'm about to try getting data from database.

My short-term goal is to learn enough to understand the framework, build a dynamic site that hosts the content I currently have in a static site, and learn about membership, forums, and role management in OnTap.

Apparently I was mistaken and I haven't installed CF5 on my development server since I had to reinstall the operating system a few months ago... If you're unable to get an MX server running to work with, let me know and I'll dig out my CD and have a look. :)

Yeah, CF5 was originally supported... As time passes I test my changes with Cf5 less and less, but I still have it installed on my machine here... I'll have a look and see what I can find later this evening... I'm leaving for my 9-5 job right now and likely won't have internet access (we're supposed to have it in the next day or so -- we moved into a new office over the weekend and installation of the company's internet access at the new location got really fouled up).

I'm running CF 5.0 under IIS 5.0 on XP Professional.

I had read somewhere that the OnTap framework was backwards compatible, but I'm guessing not THAT backward...

Tried anyway and stepping through with debugger, it gets to the GetPath custom tag before erroring out. No output constructed at that point. Seems to choke on ".exists" at line 24 with a syntax error.

I tried loading the core, then the core plus plug-in manager to see if the additional code overwrites would change the behavior, but no change that I can detect.

I've tried loading to C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\ontap and C:\ontap with mapping in IIS to create the virtual directory "ontap". In the debugger I get to 300_requirements.cfm as I remember...

I'm locked into CF 5 for a current project (not OnTap related), if later is required, I'll scrape off some hard drive space and create a virtual machine so I can have more than one CF version running...

Help?

Yep performance is an issue... although the framework appears to scale
rather well...

When Dave Ross put up his blog, the first article on it was about
load-testinbg comparisons between Fusebox, Mach-II and onTap which I
was doing at the time. I hadn't actually set up the web-stress tool
myself, Dave did it for me and got these results:

The encouraging aspect being that although onTap did appear to be very
heavy (more than 2x the load time of Mach-II) for a smaller number of
threads (20) its performance improved to become near or better than
that of Mach-II at much higher numbers of threads (150). Although all
of this is somewhat outdated now as this was before the release of the
HTML libraries. Maybe one of these days I'll find some time to draw up
a simple test application to compare them again...

Regarding the HTML library specifically, I know that it's pretty heavy
when compared to a flat file (which is more work). There are some
caching tools built in to the html tag to help reduce some of this
load. Here's a brief example:

There are some limits to this -- one caveat in particular is that once
cached, the contents of dynamically generated select boxes, radio
buttons and checkboxes will also be cached (so if the content of the
table changes, you need to change the cachedafter date). The example
above won't change the cachedafter date when the content of a related
table is updated, although I'm thinking about adding the ability to
explicitly delete the cache using the tag, i.e. <cfmodule ...
cachename="myform" deletecache="true" /> and have it destroy the
cached form elements.

For forms you may want to stick with generating the form on each
request unless you have a specific need for a particular form to load
faster because of this limitation, however because navigation is
usually reasonably static it should be reasonably easy to create a
caching scheme for navigational elements that allows you to take full
advantage of the html libraries without suffering much delay. On the
framework site right now I believe I'm using
"header.#variables.tap.process#" as the cachename for the header
because each process might change the header by adding a sub-menu,
etc. The internal caching scheme in the html tag ensures that cache is
stored for each brand (if branding is enabled) and each locale (if
multiple languages/locales are used) so your own caching scheme
doesn't need to include these vectors. The generated output of html
structures (flat text) can also be separately cached at display to
further improve performance after adding customizations to the html -
there's a content.cfm custom tag (#request.tapi.content()#) or you can
simply store the string returned from html.show() into a shared scope
variable.

Additionally (and more generally) if you're not using or not planning
to use the framework's branding features, you can turn them off, which
will eliminate some loop cycles. I believe the variable for that is
request.tap.brand, so simply adding request.tap.brand = false to your
_appsettings.cfm should do that for you.

If you're not terribly concerned about having the most flexible
navigation possible, you can also use flat html in /_layout.cfm
templates to generate navigation. It's not as powerful or as easily
branded as html library navigation, but it's definately faster. Of
course you can also combine some elements of both. While the xhtml
custom tag is really nice for being easy for developers to read, it
introduces a lot more overhead than the cf_html library because it
needs an xml document which is then parsed and converted, whereas the
cf_html library functions are faster, but harder for developers to
grasp when reading them. A compromise for some navigation may be to
use a semi-static /_layout.cfm template where the larger elements are
static text and laid out with CSS while menus and other dynamic
navigational elements are generated with your own set of menu
management functions, i.e. mainMenuAdd(label,url) or
subMenuAdd(label,url).

As a side note, I don't recommend using /_layout.cfm templates for
plugin applications because they're harder to customize when someone
else installs your plugin. They'd have to either change your layout
template -- which is one of the cardinal sins I'm trying to avoid with
this framework -- or they'd have to use a branded /_layout.cfm
template which would replace yours if they need to change any
hard-coded text in it.

All that being said, of course any way that we can improve the
frameworks performance would generally be considered a positive
addition. :) Although it seems to scale well, performance has never
been its strongest suit -- it's always been much more about creating
powerful applications quickly than it has been about page delivery
(applications vs. sites).

Performance tweaks

Isaac,

I've been playing around with onTap for a couple of days now, but I'm
starting to wonder about performance. In production mode, a simple
page that has a database backed form (using the <tap:form tag) runs at
2.6 seconds. I'm afraid that once I actually get some layout and
navigation going, this page generation speed won't be bearable? Is
there something else I should be doing other than setting
request.tap.development = false and request.tap.compress = true?

You've got a couple of options (in order of my own preference):

1) create a foreign key constraint between the categories and items
tables - the framework will then automatically pick up the constraint
and make the appropriate join when those 2 tables are specified

2) make sure the foreign key table (items) uses the same name for the
related column as the primary key table (categories) so in this case
the tables would be joined on "category_id" in both tables (this is
the assumption that results in the join you're seeing)

3) specify the join and reference columns (column and references)
either by using the tag syntax or I was under the impression the
sql.join function also allowed you to specify these. Check the
documentation under Function Libraries > MX > DBA for the
documentation on request.tapi.sql.join().

I was able to get this to run using the tag version and specifiying

I was trying to do a join and I'm having problems. It looks like
ontap is confusing which column is which in the tables.

The join statement should read rails_todo.dbo.categories.id =
rails_todo.dbo.items.category_id

My function call:

That's the correct behavior at the beginning of that tutorial... You
create the web-accessible template, then view the page and it shows
the framework's "file not found" page, then you add the process
templates and refresh the page and it shows the Hello World content.

If you're past step 1 of the tutorial and you're still getting the "No
content found for this page" message, then you've probably placed the
_components templates in the wrong location. Make sure the spelling is
the same in the _components directory as it is in the root directory
(check for typos) i.e. these two paths map to each other:

/ontap/helloworld/index.cfm
/ontap/_components/helloworld/index.cfm

I'm able to get this working with the head revision in my testing
environment here, so I don't think it's related to the .svn directory
problem you were seeing before...

Now, when I try the simple HelloWorld tutorial:

all I get to the screen is this:

Process Path Array
001 : 02 - C:\inetpub\wwwroot\onTap\_components\_application

along with the rest of the cf debugging information.

It's like it doesn't realize the _components/helloworld directory is
there...I've tried it in both CFMX and CF7.

Good suggestion... I suspect it may need a little more thought put
toward the use of SSL ... granted, I doubt anybody's going to be using
SSL on a dev box where they're using the cf built-in-server port or
the like... but if you're using #request.tapi.getURL()# and you
specify a url that's explicitly not SSL (http rather than https -- it
assumes unless you specify the protocol that the protocol will remain
the same as the current request) then you might end up with
"http://server:81" ... maybe if we just preclude both port 80 and port
81 that might work...

This build has solved the .svn directory problem for me. As a side
note, you might want to set up the _preapp.cfm file definition of
request.tap.href.root to account for port numbers since a lot of

I don't actually test the application in my working copy because the
self-installing plugins would create a condition of having the working
copy for several plugins inside the working copy for the core
framework (not to mention having the pluginmanager in the same
directory could cause all kinds of confusion or flat out problems with
SVN). Intead I replicate it to a separate testing directory where I
install the plugin manager and plugins and execute the application(s)
from there... I just committed a couple revisions for the nightly
build tho which fixed this problem with the tapi custom tag in my
working copy locally. So you should be able to update your working
copy from svn and be in good shape.

Isaac,

I've got a problem with the onTap framework trying to read cfm files
out of .svn directories. Is there a patch available since I figure
you're using subversion now.

This is the error:
