> Hi Bastien
>
> Thanks for your input.
>
> My current thoughts are to slim Columba down to the bare essentials
> (sending & receving mails). All the other stuff can be added once we have
> got the core application up and running(ie the calendar, spam filter etc
> etc).
>
> With regards to the spam filter i tend to agree with you. There are some
> great projects out there, lets utilise one of them and get on with the
> Columba development.
>
> As I see it we currently have 2 tasks in front of us:
>
> 1. Decide on Javamail vs Ristretto - and if the decision is made to use
> javamail there is a lot of work ahead
> 2. Port the application to a RCP (My vote is for Netbeans)
>
> Cheers
> Tim

For both tasks, it could be helpful to write a sort of matrix which lists the features provided by the two alternatives (I guess they have a lot of common features, sometimes with an easier way to use it etc.).

When you have a global idea about what they provide and how easy it is to use them, the choice should be fairly simple to make.

I also agree that getting the core application (email) running is one of the first steps. If you decide to use an RCP, a calendar, addressbook and other features will integrate nicely in the GUI later (Something like Kontact from KDE would be great, as there's no such tool on windows).

Bastien

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

I'm a new user of Columba, and I'm glad to have found a good email client. I am disapointed by the major clients available on windows (even Thunderbird seems to handle IMAP correctly only once in a month...) , but it seems that Columba is very stable and has a lot of space for improvements.

I saw that the project is not quite dead, and that some of you are heavily thinking about how the project could be continued. Here are some thoughts:

- using Netbeans RCP would make development easier, in particular for plugins

- maybe that Macchiato should be replaced by another recent spam engine, as the development as not been continued for two years (correct me if I'm wrong) and spammers have changed a lot the way the act. It may be a lot of work to have a performant spam engine

- the GUI could be separated from the storage engine and reused nearly 'as is' for let's say an RSS agregator

What you are planning to do seems to be a lot of work, especially if you want to restart from scratch to use an RCP for the GUI.

I am ready to contribute to the project in my spare time, as I am currently looking for something to do in Java.

I will follow the different threads about the future of columbia and see if it will fit my developers needs ;)

Best regards,

Bastien

Bastien

There used to be some sort of manual in the source plugin tree. I
don't have a tree on this machine to look. Best to start with an
existing plugin and modify it to suit.

> Also once i have created a plugin, how do I compile them, lets say
> from
> Eclipse?

I don't know how it is done with Maven but in the past there were
makefiles associated with each plugin that you could use with Eclipse.
This is why it is good to start with an existing plugin. Put it in a
different folder and hack on it from there.

Hi Gary

I think I must be the lone ranger at Columba that uses Netbeans!
Columba is currently being converted to Maven builds, so you have to get the Maven plugin for Netbeans, and it doesn't hurt to have the Maven commandline tool installed either.

After that you shouldnt have any problems, netbeans will recognise the projects as maven projects and you will be able to import them like any other

Cheers
Tim

On Sun, May 10, 2009 at 2:44 AM, Mark Livingstone <mlivingstone@...> wrote:

Up until now, the vast majority of people working on Columba have used
Eclipse. As such, most of the compilation files have even been added
to the repository.

Lately, a few people have been considering adding Columba (or part
thereof) as a plugin to Columba so maybe one of them can help.

If you do get it going, maybe you can submit the Netbeans build files
and we can put them in the Wiki or repository too.

Cheers,

Cheers,

MarkL
> Hi Domique
>
> I agree that both JavaMail and Ristretto could do the job,
> and also want to aknowledge the great work that the authors
> have done with the library.
>
> However i do have some concerns.
>
> The original developers of the Ristretto code are
> no longer actively involved, and as such if we need to
> expand the library or do bug fixes it could become quite a
> task
> Having a non-standard mail api (where javamail is the
> standard) makes it much more difficult to just plugin email
> libraries, as they will all be designed to work with the
> standard. In the long run I'm lazy... why
> maintain something that we can get away with somebody else
> maintaining?
> I do realise that it will be a large amount of work to
> get the JavaMail api into Columba, but there is hardly a
> better time to get it in then now, as the project is largely
> seen as being inactive and there is no pressure to work on a
> new release etc etc
>
>
> Thats my view anyway
>
> Tim
> Hi Timothy,
>
>
>
> Thanks for having done this search. I had just forgotten
> such a search could give interesting results.
>
>
>
> The most interesting email exchange I have found+read is:
>
>
>
>
> It looks like Ristretto and JavaMail offer quite similar
> features, but Ristretto API may fit a little better with
> Columba needs.
>
>
>
> As I have no inner detail :-( I am keen to think (up to
> now), while truly respecting Ristretto developers'
> achievement, that both Ristretto and JavaMail could do the
> job.
>
>
>

Hi Domique

I agree that both JavaMail and Ristretto could do the job, and also want to aknowledge the great work that the authors have done with the library.

However i do have some concerns.

The original developers of the Ristretto code are no longer actively involved, and as such if we need to expand the library or do bug fixes it could become quite a task

Having a non-standard mail api (where javamail is the standard) makes it much more difficult to just plugin email libraries, as they will all be designed to work with the standard.

In the long run I'm lazy... why maintain something that we can get away with somebody else maintaining?

I do realise that it will be a large amount of work to get the JavaMail api into Columba, but there is hardly a better time to get it in then now, as the project is largely seen as being inactive and there is no pressure to work on a new release etc etc

Thats my view anyway

Tim

On Mon, May 4, 2009 at 11:53 AM, Dominique de Vito <ddv36a78@...> wrote:

Hi Timothy,

Thanks for having done this search. I had just forgotten such a search could give interesting results.

The most interesting email exchange I have found+read is: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=23782.1056988142%40www20.gmx.net

It looks like Ristretto and JavaMail offer quite similar features, but Ristretto API may fit a little better with Columba needs.

As I have no inner detail :-( I am keen to think (up to now), while truly respecting Ristretto developers' achievement, that both Ristretto and JavaMail could do the job.

>
> I'm not sure of all the details behind the development,
> but i think that the main thing was that JavaMail wasn't
> as polished as it is now.
> see this mail
> that i found in the devel mailing list archives.... thats as
> while I am currently reading JavaMail to learn about
>
> Could someone give me why Ristretto has been developped and
