Comments on Canon's G12

While looking for info for my daughter I noticed some good prices on the G12.  I'm considering it as a replacement for my Powershot A590 as a "have a camera with me whenever"

Any comments on image quality and low light focus speed?

Thanks,

Bob

The build quality on the G12 is far better then the 590.
The G12 is a semi, pro, compact with lots of variations in settings.

I have a friends that has one and loves it.

I had one for about 6 months... got rid of it because:
1. shutter lag... it doesn't take the picture when you press the button
2. NOISE NOISE NOISE... the picture quality was awful and totally unacceptable to me.... Too many MP in too small a space... except for photo journalism maybe... even compared to my previous G9

I have a G-7, use it as you describe, with me most of the time, I use iso 200 as a normal, set the colors to vivid, wouldn't be without my G, though the new G X1 looks awful good but a touch expensive, Bob M.

Well, I bought a used A590 about 1 year ago, and it's ok, but certainly
the noise is pretty bad above ISO 400. It does go to down to ISO 80,
though. And, I bought it for about $77 on ebay. As the G12 is about $400,
I would expect that it should perform at least 4 times as well as the 590.
And, the G12 shoots RAW, which I would have loved to have on the 590. But
for general usability, manual modes (which is why I bought it) and value,
the 590 is very good. I heard very good things about the G10 when it came
out; I'd be surprised if Canon made the G12 worse than the G10.

In short, it's probably a very good camera for what you are looking for,
as I would expect a $400 P&S to be.

Have you read the dpreview of it? They are usually quite complete in terms
of IQ and performance. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonG12/

I found that the G12 was, in fact a very nice camera... nicer than the
G10... fantastic features, including RAW!...  It's only the pictures
that were worse.

Re: Comments on Canon's G12 vs Olympus E-P3 PEN

I know it's in a completely different price bracket, but I was thinking
of picking up an around town camera and read a series of positive
reviews of the Olympus E-P3 PEN...anyone here have input on this four
thirds system camera?
