Compatability of the SCM Microsystem SCL3711 contactless smart card reader

Hello,

Does the SCM Microsystems SCL3711 contactless smart card reader work correctly
on Linux (i586 and X86_64)?

I wish to use a smart card reader and PAM (Pluggable Authentication Module) to
enable using a contactless smart card for logging into my computer.  I need
the data in the contactless smart card (that enables logging in) to be
securely encrypted, to prevent unauthorized access or modification.

Despite having some familiarity with Linux, I am completely new to smart cards
and am having much difficulty learning what is necessary to achieve my goal
stated above.

On page 2 of the the SCL3711 data sheet:
http://www.scmmicro.com/fileadmin/products/datasheets/Dat_SCL3711_e.pdf
and on page 21 of the SCL3711 Reference Manual:
http://www.scmmicro.com/fileadmin/products/datasheets/SCL3711.MANUAL.VER13.pdf
SCM Microsystems claims the reader to be compatible with Linux; yet, gives no
clues or details what software makes that possible.  I would like to verify
the validity of SCM Microsystem's compatibility claim before I waste any more
time or money on this problem.  I have not yet purchased a SCM Microsystems
SCL3711 contactless smart card reader.

The SCM Microsystems SCL3711 Reference Manual (on page 17) says the NFC
controller is PN533 (NXP).  I do not know if that information is useful, nor
what that means.

I sent an email to SCM Microsystems asking what Linux software enables using
the SCL3711, and have yet to receive a response.

I apologize if my question was previously addressed and I was not able to find
that answer.

I searched through the smart card matrix at:
http://pcsclite.alioth.debian.org/section.html
and the SCL3711 is not listed.

I searched through the entirety of the archives of lists.drizzle.com (where
the MUSCLE mailing list is hosted):
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3dlists.drizzle.com
and through the entire drizzle.com domain:
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3ddrizzle.com
and through the entire pcsclite.alioth.debian.org domain (where PCSC-Lite is
hosted):
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3dpcsclite.alioth.debian.org
and through the entire musclecard.com domain (where the MUSCLE home page is
hosted):
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3dmusclecard.com
and through the entire linuxnet.com domain (where the MUSCLE Card Reader
Drivers and Driver Developer Kits are listed):
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3dlinuxnet.com
and through the entire www2.aquamaniac.de domain (where Libchipcard is
hosted):
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3dwww2.aquamaniac.de
and the keyword "3711" does not appear anywhere within those domains.

I searched through the entire domain where the MUSCLE archive is kept at
archives.neohapsis.com:
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3darchives.neohapsis.com
The key term "3711" does appear in some documents, yet never appears in the
context of anything about smart cards.

I searched through the entire opensc-project.org domain (where the OpenSC
project is hosted):
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3dopensc-project.org
and through the entire alioth.debian.org domain:
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3dalioth.debian.org
and through the entire lists.gnupg.org domain:
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3dlists.gnupg.org
and through the entire gnupg.org domain:
http://www.metacrawler.com/metacrawler/ws/results/web/3711/1/485/TopNavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true&adv=qall%3d3711%26domaini%3dinclude%26domaint%3dgnupg.org
and the key term "3711" does appear in some documents; yet, always appears in
the context of code development, not smart card reader compatability, nor any
indication I could perceive about what software I need to use.

I used the MetaCrawler.com advanced search to find any document containing the
key terms "Linux", "smart", and "3711" anywhere on the Internet.  The search
results contained no direct references relating to compatability or lack of
compatability between Linux and the SCM Microsystem SCL3711 contactless smart
card reader.  MetaCrawler.com is a metasearch engine that uses Google, Yahoo!
Search, Windows Live, and more.

Thanks in advance for any help.

it's not a CCID device (ccid not mentioned in the data sheet),
so it won't work with the generic ccid driver. I don't think
we have a special driver for it in openct.

the normal software for contactless smart card readers is librfid:
http://openmrtd.org/projects/librfid/

but it supports other readers, not the one you mentioned.

also if you need a software doing full encrypted communication with the card,
you have to find such a software. I doubt any opensc card driver is written
to do that.

so I guess they have a binary only driver for pcsc-lite that you can use,
and then need to write your own software for some card to meet your high
standards.

Regards, Andreas

SCM provides proprietary drivers for their readers. I have not checked
for the SCL3711.
It may, or may not, work for you.

Some contactless readers are supported by my Free Software CCID
driver. See [1] and search for contactless in the 'features' column.

Actually Italian CNS card driver which waits for inclusion (#177 on
OpenSC trac) implements secure messaging in a general way by adding
encryption methods to card driver hooks.

I'm in the process of putting it into my 0.12 branch this week, after
I've evaluated the sc_keycache thing and its relation to secure
messaging keys...
