Will I run into Firebug compatibility problems if I enable auto update
of Firefox itself?

Firebug 1.4 works on Firefox 3.0 and 3.5
Firebug 1.5 works on Firefox 3.5 and 3.6
http://getfirebug.com/releases

We plan to test 1.4 on Firefox 3.6 so that Firefox 3.6b1 users on AMO
can use it until both Firefox 3.6 and Firebug 1.5 are final.

I don't know what you call "Firefox Auto Updates", but if you
shouldn't get compatibility issues. Sometimes certain Firebug versions
doesn't run with some Firefox ones, but that usually happens when you
try to use a new Firebug on an old Firefox.
