Computer access assessmentsHi all Do any of you working in NHS departments provide computer access assessments to local clients? By this I mean access to PC or laptop for email/word processing/internet, not AAC or ECS. We have provided this service for some years and I would like to know if we are offering something unusual, to help justify continued funding. I am aware of Ability Net and the Ace Centres as we do work in conjunction with these on occasions. Thanks

Re: Computer access assessmentsHi Mike We provide this in Tayside, but on the basis of it being a lower priority than our ECE and special controls work, in that we allocate
a nominal session/week (from 2 Clin Sci WTEs) to cover this sort of work, although the input is significantly higher when it is part of the provision of an integrated system. We have no funds to cover equipment related to accessibility, aside from basic switches,
but we regularly provide reports to support funding cases. I personally feel that this really should become a core component of EAT services, given the increasing importance of computing, and
the internet in particular, for so many aspects of independence in everyday life (access to services, home working, keeping in contact, banking, shopping, rights issues etc.). Re: Computer access assessmentsHi Mike
Computer accessibility is one of our main areas of EAT provision (along with AAC, custom wheelchair controls, integrated systems and occasionally ECS). We cover the East Kent region and have some funding to provide access equipment and/or software. Things do become difficult however, when it comes to extremely expensive equipment such as Eye-Gaze devices. I agree with Jeremy. As an NHS service, we can offer impartial advice and are in a position to provide a more holistic service for severely disabled clients, where some degree of integration may be required. Re: Computer access assessmentsDitto. Generally we find funding through ECS budgets, control of a computer after all, is comparable to control of a TV - I imagine, though I've not seen evidence, that most would find it more important.

Re: Computer access assessmentsDear Mike
Lincoln EAT have been carrying out computer access assessments for 10 years or so. We take the same view as Simon J, the Computer is part of the clients home environment so needs to be addressed and is often more of a priority to the client than other home control requirements. Funding of equipment / software is from our EC budget. It is also worth noting that this area of activity is one of the more important benefits that clients get where an in-house EAT service has been developed. RSL Steeper and Possum Controls have shown little interest in getting involved with supply and installation of equipment, presumably it is an area that does not make economic sense to tackle. Re: Computer access assessmentsHi Mike
In relation to Simon's reply and as an addendum to my previous reply, we use our ECE budget solely to purchase ECE equipment (we have other small sources of money but not enough for serious PC accessibility). We have not used this budget for PC access in the past because of the poor quality of the ECE interfacing to PCs. However, I have been very impressed with the Keo's abilities in this area and as a result we have in fact funded this PC interface for a number of clients this year. Re: Computer access assessmentsOur multidisciplinary service is provided as a partnership between Health and Education in East Kent, with some funding from Children’s Social Services. We
work with children and young people – before ultimately handing them over to Aejaz’s Adult Service. AAC and computer access form our core work. The computer access is often strongly linked to curriculum access – although we are building up our work around
access to leisure, which includes computing for leisure and aspects of environmental control. We directly assess and provide equipment and support to children & young people with the most complex needs (“Tier 2”) – but we have developed a number of
resources (in partnership with others) to support community OTs, Specialist Teachers and others to support children with more straightforward needs (“Tier 1”). These resources include:
·
Generic training courses – some targeted at defined professional groups, some around specific software, others targeted at meeting needs in particular
environments
·
Consultations for professionals around individual children – they bring info and a video and end up with suggestions and an action plan
·
“Cluster boxes” - sets of alternative computer access devices available for loan to Health and Education professionals who have attended “Cluster
Box Training”
·
Website:
www.kenttrustweb.org.uk/senict
·
Loan equipment (mainly AAC) – in conjunction with the Find A Voice charity So – we do provide computer access assessments – but there are other local professionals and organisations working with children in this area of work – and
partnership has been key for us. Yours David Attwell

Re: Computer access assessmentsHi Mike, not able to say what services there are around the country but it
does strike me that there are opportunities for NHS EAT depts. to offer this as a contract service to local HE institutes. The Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) services are contracted out to organisations of variable competence (according to reports that we hear at FAST) with many unable to undertake assessment and support for students with more complex needs. Perhaps there is the possibility to join up income streams NHS/ Education to keep the service viable? Would be interested to hear if anyone has made this connection and is getting funding in this way. Cheers. Re: Computer access assessmentsHello Mike.
I know that Birmingham will undertake a PC access assessment, and will fund the "access soultion" equipment, e.g. headmouse, trackballs, software such as GRID2 etc, but they don't fund the computer themselves. This is left up to the client. They do however loan a laptop for a period of time where the client has none, so that they can determin if the chosen access solution is effective, or whether a different aproach is needed. There may be unexpected visual or cognitive issues etc. Following the loan period the loan computer is usually withdrawn as it will be needed for other client loans. If however the computer is used for AAC purposes as well then this is provided for as long as the client needs it.
Forgive my reply being in the third person but I am on holiday and this is not my NHS account, (Broadband Dongle !)
I realise I have a vested interest in this but whilst on the subject of computer access, we should not forget the increasing demand for access to computer games hardware. I have had requests from both young and not so young for this. Some of my NHS clients want to be able to play games with their children, as much as profoundly physically disabled young people needing to be able to play with their siblings and peers.
I have not looked into this but I wonder if the Games machines are fundamentally more stable than PC's, and as they can have keyboards and web cams and will also do e-mail and other forms of communication, whether they might not be more suitable in some instances than PC's.
Best regards,
Geoff Harbach

Re: Computer access assessmentsDear All
I am beginning to get a feel there is much more collaboration between Education and Health happening than say two years ago when I first wrote the TechDis AAC and AT pages on http://techdis.palepurple.co.uk/sites/techdis I am updating them all now and I am desperate to add the latest useful links and information. There is lots of rather negative comments on the pages but I think a pattern of improved transition is developing? (or maybe not?) Any positive points would be wonderful if I could possibly quote them? Such as "partnerships being key to us" and the types of partnerships that are occurring? :>)) Simon I promise to get into the journals and other evidence base stuff for education as well, when I have a moment as I want to link this all up with all the sites we have! Door Entry CamerasHi, Has anyone supplied a door entry camera system for a patient
(specifically from an Environmental Control budget) to improve their security
measures? I would perceive that one coming in through a TV channel would be
suitable for an Environmental Control user rather than on a small screen on a
telephone. It would make sense for such a system to be supplied by Social Work
as it would be a standard “off the shelf” item rather than a specialist
product. Thoughts on this? Thanks, Neil

Re: Door Entry CamerasHi Neil We are currently involved in the supply of such a device. You might consider the inclusion of a transceiver as part of the installation so that the image
could be sent to multiple TVs. The funding is coming via a stage3 adaptation request, which was accepted with a supporting assessment from me, although these are traditionally provided by OTs. If that funding route had failed we would have considered fundintg
it through the budget for the local telecare project. The security issues for this client had significant quality of life implications, associated with acceptance of their new accommodation, and was easily justifiable. Hope that helps. Re: Computer access assessmentsDear all who have responded to this subject, I have been very interested in reading your responses. I am an OT who is now Wirral’s Assistive Technology
Strategic Development Manager. My role initially has been around establishing a
telecare service via the Preventive Technology Grant. Now, I am project managing
the numerous facets of telecare, telemedicine and beyond. As part of the latter
I have been managing the case of an individual who has required a computer to
enable her independence. She wishes to use Outlook to send prompts to her
mobile phone as she has memory problems affecting day to day planning. The IT
is also to enable her re her hobbies of grow your own gardening and card making
– the latter being a business opportunity. Her computer is being funded via Wirral’s Personalised
Budget pilot as personalised budgets can be used for the purchase of
technology. In enabling individuals to use their Personalised Budgets in
this way, my concern is how we ensure that individuals have the assessment and
advice they need. This is important to ensure the solutions individuals need
are effectively and appropriately identified and that money is not wasted, by
them having to trawl through the market place to hopefully find what is required.
My current experience has led to me working with North West
EAT, which is obviously a resource with a wealth of knowledge and expertise.
Our discussions of how such advice and support could be provided have initially
involved the ideas of bringing a basic level of expertise locally here in
Wirral e.g. basic switches, software programmes etc, possibly via an
environment like an Independent Living Centre. We also a need to consider how
we can ensure access to the expertise of the EAT service, is available when
required beyond this. This could involve an increase in the EAT work load. I have provided feedback regarding the need for computer access
assessments and assessment for specialist technology, in relation to the
effective use of personalised budgets, to the recent consultation relating to
the Specialised Services National
Definitions Set (3rd Edition) Assessment and Provision of
Equipment for People with Complex Physical Disabilities (all ages) - Definition
no. 5. From reading all your responses, this subject of computer
access assessments appears to be one that various EAT type services are aware
of, providing or grappling with, across the country. I would welcome some
understanding as to whether you are all EAT services or something else. I would
also appreciate any comments or further thoughts on this issue. As I progress here with my project to find out how we will
meet the computer access and other technology needs of individuals, here on
Wirral, I am happy to update the forum of my progress and hopefully the final
outcome. Regards Angie Angie Carter Wirral Assistive Technology - Health and Social Care Award Winners

Alphabetical keyboardFAST's had a request from someone looking for a PC keyboard with the letters
laid out alphabetically (ie not the standard QWERTY layout) and with numbers. I've found this: http://www.abckeyboard.co.uk/ but although the website looks active, there is no response to emails or phone calls to the number given, and it looks as if the supplier is no longer around. Has anyone got any suggestions? Re: Alphabetical keyboard [Scanned][Spam score:8%]Andy--
Thanks for quick reply. Just to clarify, does that mean you could reassign all 26 keys to form an alphabetical layout (and presumably put new stickers on to avoid confusion??)
