Connecting to Microsoft Live Messenger problems

Many thanks for Pidgin.  It is working well for me with Google.

I am trying to setup a Pidgin account to my Microsoft Windows Live
account.  I am providing the email address and password for the
Windows Live account.  However, Pidgin never seems to be able to
login.

Pidgin 2.5.8
(libpurple 2.5.8)

Must I have a hotmail.com email address?  What am I missing.  Thanks
for your help.
