Consistency in capitalizatoinShai noticed that our pw reset functionality has the text: "Forgot your Password" which has a lower-case y. He changed it in http://bit.ly/fDxm However, I notice that we don't have a lot of internal consistency in capitalization. Chad, Jakob-- can you guys come up with a set of rules we can apply? Here are the places where we need them: 1) Menu dropdown options ("Add from server") 2) Buttons ("Apply All") 3) Button links ("Forgot your password?") 4) Form labels ("Sort by") If you can throw something together in the codex, I'll go and fix all of our text. thanks, -Bharat ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Enter the BlackBerry Developer Challenge This is your chance to win up to $100,000 in prizes! Re: Consistency in capitalizatoinI would prefer initial cap only with the exception of proper names and
acronyms. I can't think of any strong reason not to handle menu items, form labels, etc. any other way. Forgot your password? Search the gallery Folder name Print this with Digibug Items separated by slashes should have the initial word capitalized on both of the slash, i.e. Users/Groups. I'm not sure block titles are fine as they are, i.e Random Image, Popular Tags. These are headings, not labels or links. What do folks think of: Available RSS feeds Popular tags - Chad On Jul 20, 2009, at 8:26 AM, Bharat Mediratta wrote: > > Shai noticed that our pw reset functionality has the text: "Forgot > your > Password" which has a lower-case y. Re: Consistency in capitalizatoinHello,
i remember this discussion was already there for G2 where translators asked about this. And - as far as i remember - it ended up exactly like Chad wrote. So just for the archives in G3 titles will look the same as a link in a menu or dropdown, right? EXAMPLE: Title and link: "Rotate image" Title and link: "User management" etc. - Jens Quoting Chad Kieffer <chad@...>: > I would prefer initial cap only with the exception of proper names and > acronyms. Re: Consistency in capitalizatoinHi Chad.
I assume you include titles in "proper names". Perhaps this whould be stated. "proper names and titles". eg I notice at the bottom of the email >> vendors submitting new applications to BlackBerry App World(TM) will have >> the opportunity to enter the BlackBerry Developer Challenge.<< As it stands in Wiki, it seems only to refer to capitalisation of the first word, not obviously referring to lack of cap of the rest of the words. I think your wording here > initial cap only with the exception of proper names and acronyms.< is clearer than those in the Wiki >Always capitalize the first word of a new sentence, form label, menu >option, stand-alone link, button value, or block title. Exceptions include >proper nouns and acronyms. < Maybe you could change the Wiki to >>Always capitalize only the first word of a ....< or even drop the "always". "Capitalise only the first word ...." moves the emphasis to the capitalisation which I think is better. I would like to emphasize the word "only" but plain text does not do italics. Nit-picking, I know, but better to nit-pick now than get frustrated with making corrections later. Full stops after urlsRelated to the Capitalisation section in wiki:
>Always capitalize the first word of a new sentence following any end >punctuation. Rewrite sentences that start with a case-sensitive lowercase >word. < reminds me : I think it would be wise to state the problem caused when a fullstop follows an URL. eg if I write "My website is www.piopionz.com." someone copying and pasting will probably include the fullstop in the url and get an error message instead of opening the website. I think that, rather than messing with artificial forms of sentence structure, this is a case when the fullstop should be left out. The next sentence can be started on a new line to indicate the end of the first sentence. (I apologise for using the term fullstop but cannot remember the word Americans use for it.)
