Could not find a preview part

Bonjour,
I've installed the recent ubuntu jaunty 9.04 (I had before a 8.04
ubuntu) and installed knoda witch is provided with it (I have verified
before changing of distro !)

When trying to make a report, I got twice the same alert box with the
message I've put in subject and after a blank report. Ok, the report is
created in the output folder in ~/.hk-classes, but it's a little boring.....

Try to install xpdf or something else but nothing happens.
Ghostview is no longer packaged ; I have gs and gv too in /usr/bin .
I've tried to make a symbolic link named ghostview pointing on gv : no
result.
I wonder what prog knoda is looking for... or perhaps is it more
complicated...

Has someone an idea...

thank for any help !

cordialement,

remember my message of november (to which you responded!), which I attach.

I'm alo whith Jaunty, and Kghostview was not deleted in the
installation, so Knoda goes on reporting

printis ilin.
Necesis reinstali kghostview kaj kdeprint, aktivigante la paketaron
Ubuntu 8.04

After upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10, Knod no more saw reports, and no more
printed them
I had to reinstall kghostview qand kdeprint, activating repository
Ubuntu 8.04

Thank for the answer, I'm going to try this.
Anyway, it must be possible to modify sources in order to tell knoda to
use another viwer like gv or evince....

 presumably, I do understand that...but am not able to handle it.
Perhaps I'll try to have a look this summer, I'm too busy at the time,

Did you, Moebius, found a way to have Knoda using another viewer?

I used the Janitor of Jaunty.....and Kdeprint just disappeared, so,
again, I can't see the reports

Alas it seems that kprinter is "hard-coded" in  hk-classes.
In
http://knoda.sourcearchive.com/documentation/0.8.3-2ubuntu1/hk__kdereportpartwidget_8cpp-source.html
I found

00599 void hk_kdereportpartwidget::print_report(void)
00600 {
00601     hk_string buf=p_report->printcommand();
00602     p_report->set_printcommand("kprinter -j none");
00603     p_report->print_report(false);
00604     p_report->set_printcommand(buf);
00605 }

and googling for kdeprint download, it just seems that KDE4 made kdeprint download availability disappear from the net......

Eventually I installed debian packages from

http://packages.ubuntu.com/fr/hardy/i386/kdeprint/download
http://packages.ubuntu.com/fr/hardy/i386/kghostview/download

and Knoda works again.....

Bonjour,
Unfortunately, I've found no solution except yours....
It would be nice to find someone able to look at the code to update it ;
I don't understand why knoda, that is a very good frontend with features
that are nowhere else in linux world, is left without noone to maintain it.

cordialement,

If I might interject at this point. :~)

Whereas I completely agree it's a shame and that knoda is the stand-out
database application I can find for Linux, I would think the problem is
time and money.

I have absolutely no idea whatsoever how many people actually use it in
anger like I do, but maybe if we really want to see it continue to
evolve and grow we should think about paying someone to update it?

If there are only a handful of people using it, that's probably not
going to work. If there are a lot, then we should look at trying to see
whether there's any way at all we could have someone work on it and we
all donate an affordable fee.

Open source is free as in freedom, not free as in beer and it's only
fair to pay for a developer's time.

knoda has a few things that are great, but several things that would
mean it would impractical for a business of any sort of size with non
techy people using it IMHO. That and any bug fixes would mean there was
plenty of work for someone!

I don't know about "nowhere else".  I wanted to stop using Knoda because of a few bugs and because of problems with some of the KDE libraries, that it requires, conflicting with versions I needed to use.

However, I found that Open Office Database works very well as a nice GUI forms frontend to mySQL (the database I am using) via ODBC, so I switched.  I don't know if it meets your requirements, but maybe it's worth a look?

Whilst open office base has many good features it does not appear to be
able to present a user interface, form, that is pleasing to the eye -
just boxes.
There are some other features that knoda excels at but my database
cannot remember what they are at the moment. As I vaguely recall it was
a feature of drop down boxes where knoda has a selection option that you
can put in when you are creating the form but for open office it
involves writing a macro.

Knoda please.

The herebelow links downloaded

    _3.5.9-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

versions of Kdeprint and Kghostview. (I understand that these are
versions fitted to KDE 3.5.9

Synaptic updated them some days ago to the versions fitted to KDE
3.5.10, and it runs smooth.....
