Creating custom module

I have some instructions from a page that has been removed regarding the maven task to create a module skeleton.  These instructions are no longer functional (not too surprised by that since the page has been removed).  What are the new instructions for setting up a skeleton to create a new module?  Or, should I just follow the new instructions and create a directory structure as documented and work off that?
